What games are like Final Fantasy XV? If you want another open-world action RPG with real-time combat, the best starting point is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It offers the closest overall replacement for a large, quest-led journey, although its swordplay is more deliberate and its story is darker. For faster spectacle, choose Kingdom Hearts III; for movement and open-area exploration, choose Forspoken; and for a lighter companion adventure, choose Dragon Quest Treasures.
Final Fantasy XV is difficult to duplicate because it combines several unusual elements at once: open-world travel, action-based combat in a mainline Final Fantasy game, a fixed group of companions, and a road-trip story built around character relationships. The games below match different parts of that formula rather than copying it exactly.

Why Final Fantasy XV is such a specific target
Square Enix describes Final Fantasy XV as combining open-world exploration with “thrilling action-packed real time combat.” That combination is the core of its appeal: you can travel through a broad landscape, accept quests, explore optional locations and then fight without switching to a separate turn-based battle screen.

Noctis travels with a consistent group of companions, so combat and story are tied to the feeling of a shared journey. A replacement can match the world size or the combat speed, but usually not the same balance of both.

Square Enix calls Final Fantasy XV a true original because its large world, characters and action-based combat arrived together in a mainline Final Fantasy entry. Use that as a filter when choosing your next game: decide whether you want the whole package, or which individual feature matters most.
At-a-glance: which game fits your priority?
| Game | World structure | Combat feel | Companions | Tone and story | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Large open world | Deliberate swordplay with more tactical pacing | Story-driven relationships rather than a constant road-trip party | Darker, quest-focused fantasy | The closest overall open-world substitute |
| Kingdom Hearts III | More directed worlds and areas | Fast, spectacle-heavy action | Allies who support the action in each setting | Brighter, crossover-focused adventure | Players who put immediacy and spectacle first |
| Forspoken | Vast open areas in Athia | Spell-based action built around movement | Less focused on a fixed traveling party | Fantasy exploration with a ruined-world setting | Exploration and traversal enthusiasts |

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — the best overall open-world substitute
Choose The Witcher 3 when your priority is traveling through a large world, following substantial quests and finding stories away from the main path. Its official description presents it as an open-world RPG, making it the clearest structural match for someone who wants to leave a linear game behind.
Where it matches Final Fantasy XV
Both games make travel itself part of the experience. You move between objectives through a broad landscape, discover optional activities and build an adventure from many separate quests. That makes The Witcher 3 a better substitute for the “live in this world for a while” feeling than a game that only offers a series of isolated stages.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Quest-led travel is the strongest reason to start here. If your favorite FFXV moments involved stopping somewhere unexpected, investigating a side objective or letting the setting provide the next distraction, this structure should feel familiar even though the setting and characters are very different.
Where the combat differs
Do not expect the same speed or presentation. The remastered version of The Witcher 3 is described by its official site as having more dynamic combat through revamped animations, finishers and an adaptive camera, but its swordplay remains more deliberate than FFXV’s highly mobile spectacle. You have more time to read an encounter and choose an approach instead of constantly chaining flashy movement.

That difference is useful if you want action with a clearer tactical rhythm. It is a poor fit if your main requirement is instant, cinematic momentum in every fight. Try it for world and quest quality first, then decide whether its measured combat pace suits you.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if a continuous open world and quest density matter more than matching FFXV’s exact combat speed.
- Choose it if you are comfortable with a darker tone and stories that place moral choices and investigation ahead of a light road-trip mood.
- Skip it as your first pick if you want a bright, constantly moving party adventure or very rapid aerial action.
Kingdom Hearts III — the closest fast-action feel among Square Enix options
Kingdom Hearts III is the strongest choice when “like FFXV” means fast, satisfying real-time combat. Square Enix highlights its fast-paced action, so it answers the desire for immediate attacks, visual spectacle and momentum better than the other alternatives here.
What carries over
The important overlap is responsiveness. Battles are built to feel energetic rather than methodical, and the presentation aims for a strong sense of impact. If you enjoyed FFXV because every encounter looked and felt active, this is the most natural combat-first recommendation.
It also shares a broad, colorful adventure sensibility rather than pursuing the grounded darkness of The Witcher 3. The emotional register is different, but the emphasis on movement and spectacle can make the transition comfortable for an FFXV player who wants action above all else.
What does not carry over
This is not a one-to-one open-world replacement. Its structure is more directed, with adventures organized around distinct worlds and areas instead of one continuous road network. The appeal comes from moving rapidly through set-piece environments, not from recreating FFXV’s long-distance road-trip rhythm.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Its companion model also serves the action in each setting rather than reproducing FFXV’s fixed group dynamic. Expect allies and team interaction, but do not expect the same sense of four friends sharing every mile of a single journey.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if combat speed, spectacle and immediate feedback are your top three requirements.
- Choose it if a more directed structure is acceptable in exchange for tightly presented action sequences.
- Look elsewhere first if your favorite FFXV feature was freeform travel across one connected landscape.
Forspoken — choose movement and exploration over party dynamics
Forspoken is the right recommendation when the part of FFXV you want to preserve is the feeling of crossing a huge landscape under your own control. Square Enix describes Frey Holland’s journey through the ruined world of Athia and emphasizes exploration across vast open areas.
Why traversal is the attraction
The game’s identity is built around getting through space. Instead of treating the environment as a backdrop between fights, it makes movement through Athia a primary reason to keep exploring. That suits players who remember FFXV’s satisfaction of setting out toward a distant location and discovering what lies between the marked points.
Its open areas are not the same thing as FFXV’s road-trip world. You should think of them as expansive regions designed for exploration rather than assume every part of the journey will have the same continuous structure.
How the combat changes the formula
Combat is spell-based action rather than FFXV’s weapon-focused style. That shift changes both the visual language and the way you think about progression: your interest is likely to center on movement, ability choice and how powers interact with the environment instead of reproducing Noctis’s particular style.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This makes Forspoken a strong fit for players who want freedom of movement and active abilities, but a weaker fit for anyone whose main reason for replaying FFXV is its companion banter and fixed-party chemistry.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if traversing large spaces is more important than having a constant party of traveling companions.
- Choose it if you want a fantasy setting presented through a ruined world and spell-based combat.
- Choose another game if your ideal replacement must preserve FFXV’s road-trip relationships or its exact combat style.
Dragon Quest Treasures — a lighter open-area adventure with allies
Dragon Quest Treasures is the gentlest match in this group. Square Enix describes exploring vast open areas with monster allies while finding and returning valuable treasures. That creates a companion-focused exploration loop, but its tone and structure are intentionally different from FFXV.
The companion loop
Monster allies are not a side detail; they are central to the way you explore. If you enjoyed the sense of traveling with others in FFXV but would prefer a more relaxed, collection-driven adventure, this is the most approachable option on the list.
The treasure objective gives exploration a clear rhythm: go out, search an area, rely on allies and bring valuable finds back. It is a different motivation from FFXV’s character-led road trip, so choose it for the lighter loop rather than expecting a replacement story.
Where expectations need adjusting
The game uses open areas, not the same continuous open-world structure associated with FFXV. Its tone is also lighter, and its action is designed around an accessible adventure rather than FFXV’s dramatic, high-impact battles. Those differences are strengths if you want a break from heavier storytelling, but they may feel too gentle if you are seeking another grand fantasy epic.

Who should choose it
- Choose it if allies, exploration and treasure collecting sound better than a darker or more demanding RPG.
- Choose it if you want open spaces without committing to a long, serious road-trip narrative.
- Do not choose it as the closest combat substitute; its appeal is the companion-and-treasure loop.
Choose by the feature you miss most
If you miss the open-world journey
Start with The Witcher 3. It is the broadest substitute for wandering through a large world while building your own sequence of quests. Pick Forspoken instead when the physical act of moving through that world matters more than quest writing or party relationships.
If you miss fast, flashy combat
Start with Kingdom Hearts III. Its fast-paced action is the clearest match for FFXV’s immediate spectacle. If you want speed but also want traversal to remain a major part of the experience, consider Forspoken, recognizing that its combat is spell-based.
If you miss the companions
Choose Dragon Quest Treasures for the most explicit ally-centered exploration loop. Choose The Witcher 3 if you want relationships expressed through substantial quests and dialogue rather than a light adventure structure. Neither recreates FFXV’s exact fixed-party road trip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you miss the tone
There is no exact tonal duplicate here. The Witcher 3 moves toward darker quest writing, Kingdom Hearts III toward bright spectacle, Forspoken toward a ruined-world fantasy journey, and Dragon Quest Treasures toward relaxed adventure. Select the emotional direction you want next instead of assuming “fantasy” means the same mood.
How the four games differ as RPGs
All four combine action with progression, but they ask you to engage with RPG systems in different ways. The useful question is not which game has the most systems; it is whether you want progression to shape combat decisions, exploration or collection.
- The Witcher 3: Equipment, quests and character development support a large role-playing journey. Its systems are most closely tied to exploration and story choices.
- Kingdom Hearts III: Progression serves a fast action loop and the changing demands of its directed adventures. The emphasis is on keeping combat expressive and immediate.
- Forspoken: Ability growth and spell selection are closely connected to movement and fighting across open areas. Build decisions matter most when they change how you approach encounters and traversal.
- Dragon Quest Treasures: Ally creatures and treasure hunting give progression a lighter, collection-oriented shape. Its systems support discovery more than dramatic character-driven role-playing.
A practical decision path before you start
- Write down your non-negotiable. Choose one: a continuous world, the fastest combat, movement across open spaces, or companion-focused exploration.
- Decide how much structural change you accept. The Witcher 3 is the closest open-world substitute; Kingdom Hearts III and Dragon Quest Treasures use more directed or open-area structures, while Forspoken emphasizes large regions.
- Set your tone preference. Select darker quest writing, bright action, ruined-world fantasy or relaxed treasure adventure.
- Check your tolerance for combat pacing. Pick deliberate swordplay, fast spectacle, spell-based movement or lighter action rather than assuming every real-time system feels like FFXV.
- Start with the game matching your first priority, not the longest feature list. A partial match that delivers your favorite element will usually feel better than a technically larger game that misses it.
What to expect when moving on from FFXV
Expect a change in emphasis whichever game you choose. FFXV’s unusual balance comes from putting open travel, action combat and a recognizable group of companions in the same package. The Witcher 3 preserves the world scale but slows the combat and darkens the writing. Kingdom Hearts III preserves speed and spectacle but gives up the continuous road-trip structure. Forspoken preserves the excitement of crossing large spaces but changes the party dynamic and replaces weapon action with spells. Dragon Quest Treasures preserves ally-centered exploration while moving toward a lighter, treasure-focused adventure.
That is why the best answer to “What should I play next if I want open-world action RPG combat like FFXV?” depends on the feature you are actually chasing. For the broadest replacement, begin with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. For combat alone, choose Kingdom Hearts III. For traversal, choose Forspoken. For a relaxed companion adventure, choose Dragon Quest Treasures.
