Valheim is the closest well-supported alternative to Enshrouded if your group wants shared exploration, gathering, crafting stations, base building, and boss-led progression. The important catch is capacity: Keen Games says Enshrouded supports up to 16-player co-op, while Iron Gate’s official Valheim FAQ says, “Servers are capped at 10 players.” Check your party size before you commit.
Enshrouded itself combines survival crafting with action-RPG systems: you explore a dangerous world, fight creatures and bosses, build and reshape a homestead with voxel tools, recruit non-player characters who unlock workshops, craft equipment, and develop a character through a skill tree. It supports solo play, hosted co-op, and dedicated servers. The alternatives below are best treated as a decision guide rather than a claim that every title offers the same mechanics.

A useful comparison starts by separating Enshrouded’s individual systems from the broad “survival game” label. Its official description presents a cooperative survival crafting action RPG, not simply a base-building sandbox. The group loop has several connected parts:
- Shared exploration: Players can travel through the world alone or with allies, discovering areas, resources, enemies, and bosses.
- Action combat: Fights are real-time encounters rather than an automated or menu-driven system.
- Character growth: Equipment and a skill tree let each player develop a build.
- Construction: Voxel building tools allow the party to shape a homestead rather than placing only a few fixed structures.
- Crafting progression: Crafted gear and workshops unlocked through non-player characters tie exploration to the next tier of equipment.
- Flexible multiplayer: The official FAQ describes co-op for up to 16 players and dedicated servers for groups that do not want the host to remain online.
The FAQ also describes the setting as a hand-crafted experience created with procedural tools and says there was no player-versus-player mode on the page’s description. Both details are time-sensitive; consult the live game page if either matters to your purchase. Together, these features define the comparison: the best substitute should support a persistent shared world, meaningful construction, cooperative combat, and a progression path that gives the group a reason to keep exploring.
Why Valheim is the strongest first alternative
Valheim is the only alternative in this list with comparable, first-party evidence for the core co-op loop. Iron Gate’s official FAQ says it can be played solo or cooperatively, supports private or public peer-to-peer sessions, and offers persistent dedicated servers. It also describes a large procedurally generated world containing multiple biomes, dungeons, caves, and sailing; crafting stations; buildable bases; and progression through biome-specific equipment and boss battles.
The shared loop is familiar, but not identical
Both games ask a group to gather materials, establish a base, improve equipment, explore new areas, and defeat increasingly demanding bosses. That makes Valheim a practical choice when your friends mainly want a long-running world in which everyone contributes to construction and preparation.
Recommended Free Tools
The worlds are made differently. Enshrouded’s FAQ describes a hand-crafted world created with procedural tools, whereas Valheim’s FAQ describes a vast procedurally generated world. A procedurally generated map can make the geography and resource locations feel less authored from one group to the next; Enshrouded’s authored approach is intended to deliver a more directed environment. Decide whether your group values a curated journey or the unpredictability of a generated world before assuming that “similar” means interchangeable.
Food is a lower-pressure survival system in Valheim
Valheim’s official FAQ says eating is not vital to survival, although food affects health and stamina. That is a meaningful difference for groups that dislike a constant hunger timer. Food still matters for preparation and combat endurance, but failing to eat is not presented as an automatic death sentence. Do not transfer expectations from one game to the other: the survival burden and the consequences of neglect are not identical.

Bosses provide an explicit progression gate
Valheim ties advancement to biome-specific gear and boss battles, according to its FAQ. This gives a party a clear answer to “what should we do next?” Gather materials, improve the base and crafting stations, prepare for a boss, then use the resulting progression to enter a more demanding biome. Enshrouded also uses bosses, equipment, and a skill tree, but its character-building layer is described more explicitly as an action-RPG system. Players who enjoy choosing a build should compare the two games’ current skill and equipment systems on their live pages rather than assuming the same depth or class structure.
Server capacity can decide the purchase
The official figures available for the two games are straightforward:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Game | Co-op or server limit | Persistent-server information | World description in the official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enshrouded | Up to 16 co-op players | The FAQ says dedicated servers can be set up so friends can play without the host always being online. | Hand-crafted experience using procedural tools. |
| Valheim | Servers are capped at 10 players. | The FAQ describes private or public peer-to-peer sessions and persistent dedicated servers. | Vast procedurally generated world with biomes, dungeons, caves, and sailing. |
These statements were published on the official FAQs accessed on October 13, 2026. Player limits and server features can change, so verify the live pages before buying or renting a server. If your regular party has 11 to 16 people, Valheim’s stated cap rules it out for a single server even if every other part of the loop appeals to you.
Who should choose Valheim?
- Choose it first when the group wants a shared world, base construction, resource gathering, exploration, and boss-to-biome progression.
- Choose it when a generated map and sailing are attractive rather than drawbacks.
- Choose it when a persistent dedicated server is important and a maximum of 10 players is enough.
- Look elsewhere when your party requires more than 10 simultaneous players, wants a strongly authored world, or treats a skill-tree-driven action-RPG build as the main attraction.
Other games like Enshrouded to put on your shortlist
Broad alternatives coverage also surfaces Palworld, V Rising, Grounded, Sons of the Forest, Nightingale, and Conan Exiles. Those names are useful starting points for a group discussion, but the available material does not establish comparable details for their mechanics, player limits, platform support, release state, or value. Do not read the list as a ranked feature comparison. Use each title as a prompt to inspect its current official page or storefront against the criteria below.

Palworld
Palworld appears in the adjacent-games shortlist and in a storefront bundle with Enshrouded. The bundle demonstrates that the two games are marketed to overlapping audiences; it does not prove that their building systems, survival rules, combat, server model, or party size are equivalent. Before choosing it, verify the current co-op limit, supported platforms, dedicated-server options, and whether its creature-focused systems fit the kind of crafting progression your group wants.
V Rising
V Rising is another surfaced candidate for players comparing co-op survival-crafting games. Confirm the current server rules, party structure, construction limits, combat model, and player-versus-player expectations from the official source. Those details determine whether it is suitable for a cooperative group that wants to avoid competitive play or wants a persistent world that remains available between sessions.
Grounded
Grounded belongs on the investigation list for groups attracted to a distinct setting rather than a conventional fantasy landscape. The shortlist alone does not establish its current player cap, platform compatibility, survival meters, or progression structure. Check those points together: a game can look appealing in screenshots yet fail a group if one friend cannot join or if the survival chores are heavier than expected.
Sons of the Forest
Sons of the Forest is included in the broad alternatives search. Treat it as a title to research for tone, threat level, construction freedom, and multiplayer persistence, not as a confirmed mechanical match. Verify whether its current co-op and server arrangements suit the number of people in your group and whether its atmosphere is appropriate for everyone who will play.

Nightingale
Nightingale was also named among possible alternatives. Before purchase, inspect the current official information for its world structure, online requirements, progression, building tools, and platform support. The fact that it appears beside Enshrouded in a discovery list is not evidence that the two games share the same survival intensity or combat design.
Conan Exiles
Conan Exiles rounds out the surfaced shortlist. Compare its current server and player rules, building scope, survival systems, and setting with your group’s priorities. If a persistent server is essential, confirm who can administer it, whether the server remains available when the original host is offline, and what the current hosting choices are before spending money.
Choose by the feature your group will notice every session
There is no universal “best” alternative because the same group may value construction, combat, survival pressure, and party size differently. Use these six axes to turn a vague search for “games like Enshrouded” into a concrete decision.
1. Building freedom and base customization
Ask whether building is the destination or merely a preparation step. Enshrouded makes voxel construction and reshaping a homestead central to its identity. If your group spends hours remodeling rooms, carving terrain, and organizing workshops, inspect each candidate’s construction rules rather than judging it by screenshots. Verify whether pieces snap to a grid, whether terrain can be edited, how much of a structure can be decorated, and whether all players can build or only the host and designated administrators.

2. Combat and RPG progression
Decide how much character specialization you need. Enshrouded explicitly combines action combat, crafted gear, and a skill tree. Ask whether an alternative offers equipment choices, permanent or respec-friendly skills, boss mechanics, and roles that let players contribute differently. If your group prefers straightforward weapons and exploration, an elaborate build system may add friction; if everyone enjoys optimizing characters, a shallow progression path may feel unfinished.

3. Survival-system intensity
Survival labels hide very different workloads. Check hunger, thirst, temperature, durability, health recovery, inventory loss, and the consequences of dying. Valheim’s official FAQ provides one concrete example: food is not vital to survival, but it changes health and stamina. Use that as a reminder to read the exact rules for every candidate instead of assuming that all survival crafting games demand constant meter management.
4. Party size and persistence
Count the people who may join during the life of the world, not only the friends available on launch night. A four-person group has different needs from a large community. Record the maximum simultaneous players, whether the limit applies per server or per session, whether a dedicated server is supported, and whether progress continues when the original host is offline. Enshrouded’s stated 16-player co-op and Valheim’s stated 10-player server cap are concrete examples of why this check comes before a purchase.
5. Setting and tone
Choose a world your group will want to inhabit for dozens of sessions. Enshrouded presents a fantasy survival setting with beasts, bosses, workshops, and a hand-crafted environment. Other shortlisted games may use very different themes and emotional tones. Confirm the level of horror, violence, humor, and environmental pressure with everyone who will play; a mechanically excellent game can still be a poor group fit if its atmosphere drives one player away.
6. Platform compatibility
Make a list of each player’s platform and edition before comparing features. Verify cross-play, account requirements, controller support, region restrictions, and whether a dedicated server is available on the platform your group uses. Platform information changes more often than a game’s basic premise, so use the current official store or support page rather than an old comparison article.

- Write down the party size. Include the largest likely session, not just the average. If the number exceeds 10, Valheim’s official cap is already a decisive constraint; if it is 16 or fewer, Enshrouded’s stated limit leaves room for the full group.
- Rank the six decision axes. Give first place to the feature that would make the group quit if it were missing. For one group that may be construction; for another it may be low-maintenance survival or a dedicated server.
- Eliminate platform mismatches. Remove any title that cannot connect everyone on the editions they own or plan to buy.
- Read the current official specifications. Capture the player limit, server model, supported platforms, and online requirements in a shared note. Do not rely on a discovery list for those details.
- Check the persistence model. Decide whether a host-led session is acceptable. If not, select a game with a dedicated-server option and determine who will administer backups, access, and updates.
- Agree on survival tolerance. Clarify whether the group wants food and resource chores to be central, occasional preparation, or nearly absent. Use Valheim’s documented food rule as a concrete reference point, then compare each other title’s current rules.
- Set a trial decision. Agree in advance on what would make the group stop: an inadequate cap, incompatible platforms, excessive survival maintenance, or a combat system nobody enjoys. This prevents one player’s sunk cost from keeping the group in a poor fit.
Dedicated servers and host-independent play
A dedicated server matters when the world should exist even if its founder is busy. Enshrouded’s FAQ states: “It will be possible to set up dedicated servers, if you don’t want to always have to be online for your friends to be able to play.” The same FAQ names GPortal as a rental partner, but a partner mention does not establish current pricing, regional availability, affiliate terms, or suitability for another game. Compare the live hosting terms and the game’s own server documentation before renting anything.
Valheim’s FAQ describes both private or public peer-to-peer sessions and persistent dedicated servers. Peer-to-peer is simpler for a small group that plays together, while a dedicated server is better when members have different schedules. In either case, decide who controls the world, how backups will be made, how passwords and permissions are handled, and what happens when the game updates. A server that technically supports persistence can still be inconvenient if nobody is responsible for maintenance.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes when comparing survival-crafting games
- Equating a shared audience with identical mechanics: A storefront bundle or an alternatives list indicates audience overlap, not matching systems.
- Ignoring the largest possible party: A game that works for four players may fail for an eleven-person community.
- Assuming “co-op” means host-independent play: Confirm dedicated-server support separately.
- Using old limits: Player caps, platform support, and server policies can change. Check the current official page immediately before purchase.
- Comparing only combat: The daily experience is also shaped by building tools, resource pressure, map structure, progression gates, and the time needed to maintain a base.
- Overlooking tone: Horror, fantasy, wilderness survival, and stylized settings create very different group experiences even when each game includes crafting.
- Expecting a universal ranking: The right choice depends on which trade-off your group is willing to accept.
A concise decision guide
- Pick Enshrouded when you want up to 16-player co-op, voxel homestead construction, action-RPG progression, NPC-unlocked workshops, and a hand-crafted world, subject to the current official feature set.
- Pick Valheim when up to 10 players is enough and you want generated exploration, biomes, dungeons, caves, sailing, crafting stations, buildable bases, and boss-led gear progression with dedicated-server support.
- Investigate the six additional shortlisted titles only after checking their current official player limits, server model, platform compatibility, building depth, combat progression, survival workload, and tone against your group’s priorities.
