If you want puzzles built around planning every move, start with Void Stranger. If you want secrets and clues woven into an action adventure, try TUNIC. End of Abyss is the pick for dark sci-fi exploration and horror action—not a confirmed Sokoban-style puzzle game. The three appeal to different kinds of curiosity, so the best match depends on whether you want to solve a room, interpret a world, or explore a hostile one.

How these games differ

Game What drives play Where the mystery sits Combat and atmosphere
Void Stranger Turn-by-turn, room-scale Sokoban-style puzzles; each move matters. In the puzzles and a story that emerges as you progress. Traps and fiendish foes are part of the puzzle setting; the central structure is puzzle-first.
TUNIC Exploration, action combat, and discovery across a connected world. In hidden secrets and an instruction manual you reconstruct from found pages. Action combat in an isometric adventure; not a room-by-room Sokoban structure.
End of Abyss Horror action and exploration, with scanning and progression through areas. In the environment and what scanning reveals about points of interest and creatures. Sci-fi survival-horror atmosphere with twin-stick combat; current descriptions do not establish it as a puzzle-first game.

This comparison is based on official store descriptions and launch-window coverage, not a measured ranking of puzzle difficulty or hands-on comparison. “Cryptic” can mean several things: exact spatial planning, clues hidden in a world, or uncertainty and discovery in a dangerous setting.

For puzzles where every move matters: Void Stranger

Void Stranger is the closest match if the appeal is working out a tightly constrained puzzle one step at a time. System Erasure describes it on Steam as a single-player 2D Sokoban-style puzzle game in which every step counts. Its rooms involve planning around traps and fiendish foes, while a larger story gradually seeps through the game. It released on September 1, 2023, according to its Steam listing.

  • Choose it for spatial logic and careful move planning.
  • Expect the puzzle structure to be central, rather than an action game with occasional riddles.
  • Its mystery unfolds alongside the puzzles, so the intrigue is not limited to solving the immediate room.

For secrets hidden in an action adventure: TUNIC

TUNIC is a strong adjacent choice if you like figuring out what a game is telling you while exploring and fighting. The isometric action adventure combines a connected world, combat, hidden treasure, and secret puzzles. A distinctive part of its discovery is an instruction manual reconstructed page by page from what you find; the pages reveal maps, tips, techniques, and secrets. TUNIC Team developed the game, and Finji published it. It released on March 16, 2022, according to its Steam listing.

For dark exploration and horror action: End of Abyss

End of Abyss fits the atmospheric, exploratory side of the pairing. Xbox Wire described it as a sci-fi action adventure from Section 9 Interactive and announced an October 1, 2026 launch for Xbox Series X|S. A September 30, 2026 GamesRadar launch review characterized it as survival horror and listed PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. These descriptions position it as horror action and exploration; they do not establish it as a pure or Sokoban-style puzzle game.

A January 2026 GamesRadar interview describes twin-stick controls, a top-down view that sometimes shifts toward isometric, and a scanner that can mark points of interest or reveal information about the environment and creatures. Section 9 co-founder Marcus Ottvall described the intended progression as relatively simple combat paired with a Metroidvania aspect: finding weapons and equipment, powering up, and unlocking interconnected areas.
