If Elementallis appeals because it combines top-down exploration, real-time sword combat, elemental abilities, dungeon puzzles, and secrets that unlock previously inaccessible areas, start with Tunic. It is the closest match for a compact, classic-Zelda-style adventure. Choose Chicory: A Colorful Tale for inventive puzzles and emotional storytelling, Okami HD for mythic world restoration and a longer journey, Death’s Door for tougher combat, or Hyper Light Drifter for fast, demanding action and discovery.

This guide explains how each game differs from Elementallis so you can choose by combat, puzzle density, tone, camera, and platform rather than by “Zelda-like” branding alone.

What Elementallis is—and what its alternatives need to match

Elementallis is a 2D, top-down action-adventure from AnKae Games, published by Top Hat Studios. It launched on April 28, 2026. Nintendo describes it as a “Top-down action-adventure with elemental magic gameplay,” while the publisher presents it as an adventure that mimics the style and feel of classic 2D Zelda games.

Its core loop is built around exploration, real-time combat, environmental puzzles, and progression through elemental abilities. The announced toolset includes a sword, shield, Fire, Water, Electricity, and other elements. Those abilities are not only combat options: they also open locations that were inaccessible earlier, creating a metroidvania-like backtracking structure.

Tunic - Switch
  • Explore a hostile and intricately-connected world of shady forests, sprawling ruins, and labyrinthine catacombs.
  • Fight mighty bosses deep beneath the earth, high above the clouds, and in places stranger still.
  • Collect the missing manual pages, bursting with hints and original full-color illustrations.
  • Discover hidden treasures to help you on your way.
  • Unearth secret relics, secret techniques, secret puzzles, and… listen, there’s a lot of secrets!

The campaign is organized around eight unique temples and eight biomes, with secrets, upgrades, bosses, and a story about growth and overcoming guilt. The premise follows a character trying to restore the elements in a dying world. That combination—compact overworld exploration, dungeon problem-solving, ability-gated routes, and real-time fighting—is the baseline for the recommendations below.

Nintendo lists a digital Switch edition. Steam lists Windows, macOS, and Linux versions with the same April 28, 2026 release date. Top Hat Studios lists Steam, GOG, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One and Series platforms. Steam showed “Very Positive (90% of 268)” user reviews at the time of the 2026 listing snapshot; that percentage is a dated indicator, not a permanent score.

Tunic: the closest classic-Zelda substitute

Why it matches Elementallis

Tunic is the first recommendation when you want the shape of a classic 2D Zelda adventure: a small, interconnected world; secrets tucked behind suspicious walls or paths; dungeon-like areas; and progression that rewards curiosity. GamesRadar describes it as a top-down isometric action-adventure inspired by the original NES Legend of Zelda.

Like Elementallis, Tunic expects you to learn the world rather than follow a constant stream of objective markers. You revisit places with new knowledge or tools, and apparently minor discoveries can change how you understand earlier areas. Its isometric camera gives scenes more depth than a strictly flat overhead view, but movement, exploration, and combat remain readable and deliberate.

Where it differs

Tunic does not use Elementallis’ elemental restoration premise. Its challenge comes from environmental interpretation, enemy encounters, and the way information is revealed. The game can be more cryptic than a straightforward dungeon crawler, so it suits players who enjoy assembling clues and mapping connections themselves.

Combat is more demanding than a relaxed adventure but is not designed solely as an endurance test. If you want the strongest balance of secrets, exploration, and Zelda-style structure, choose Tunic first. GamesRadar lists it on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale: choose puzzles and story over swordplay

What makes it a good alternative

Chicory: A Colorful Tale captures the familiar top-down adventure framework while replacing conventional weapon progression with an enchanted paintbrush. GamesRadar highlights towns, overworld areas, dungeons, intricate puzzles, and powers unlocked through that brush.

The brush is both a movement tool and a creative problem-solving system. Colouring the environment can reveal solutions, alter spaces, or help characters, so the act of interacting with the world feels different from using Fire, Water, or Electricity in Elementallis. The game’s visual identity is part of its mechanics rather than a surface theme.

Who should pick it

Choose Chicory if the part of Elementallis that interests you most is manipulating environments to open a route, understand a puzzle, or help a community. Its emotional storytelling and art direction are central, making it a better fit for players who want character relationships and personal themes alongside exploration.

It is not the choice for someone seeking constant sword-and-shield combat. GamesRadar lists Chicory for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Switch.

Okami HD: a larger, mythic restoration adventure

The shared restoration fantasy

Okami HD is a strong match for Elementallis’ premise of repairing a damaged world. GamesRadar describes a white-wolf protagonist, a magic paintbrush, world restoration, combat, NPC assistance, dungeons, and powers gained through mystical encounters.

Animal Well - Nintendo Switch
  • Explore - Illuminate the dark. A world of puzzle boxes with a profound atmosphere. Light candles for safety and gradually fill out your map. Nonlinear -- explore and collect items in whatever order you choose.
  • Solve puzzles - Observation is rewarded. Enemies, environment, and items interact in surprising and systemic ways. All items have multiple uses. Learn how innocuous details can become meaningful.
  • Survive - Tread carefully. Assess for yourself what is safe and dangerous. Focus on tension and suspense rather than action. You are disempowered, but can make clever use of your environment and items.
  • Languages – In-game text languages English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish.

Where Elementallis frames elemental abilities as tools for combat and access, Okami HD turns brush techniques into a broad supernatural vocabulary. You use them to affect the environment, solve problems, and push back a spreading threat. The result is an adventure in which restoring nature is a repeated action, not merely background lore.

Important differences in scale and presentation

Okami HD uses a stylized third-person 3D presentation rather than a 2D top-down camera. Its mythological setting, dramatic characters, and theatrical pacing make it feel more like an epic folklore journey than a compact indie dungeon adventure. Expect a longer-form experience with more dialogue and a stronger emphasis on presentation.

Pick it when you want the expressive-power fantasy of Elementallis expanded into a mythic world with a distinctive visual language. GamesRadar lists Okami HD on Xbox One and Series, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Switch.

Death’s Door: the combat-first choice

Why action players should consider it

Death’s Door is described by GamesRadar as a blend of Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, and Metroidvania design. You play a crow in a gothic but playful world, with challenging combat and exploration built around a compact set of interconnected areas.

If Elementallis’ real-time battles are more important to you than its formal temple puzzles, Death’s Door moves that priority forward. Encounters demand positioning, timing, and attention to enemy patterns. Exploration still matters, and the world contains optional discoveries, but the tension usually comes from surviving fights rather than decoding a long sequence of switches.

Trade-offs versus Elementallis

Death’s Door does not reproduce the eight-temple, elemental-ability formula. Its tone is darker and more irreverent, and its isometric perspective makes it feel closer to a compact action game than a traditional overhead Zelda clone. Choose it for challenge, movement, and boss-focused momentum.

Hyper Light Drifter: fast combat, mystery, and secrets

What it emphasizes

Hyper Light Drifter is the most combat-intensive recommendation here. GamesRadar characterizes it as a mystery-heavy fantasy and science-fiction adventure with fast, difficult combat and exploration, while placing less emphasis on puzzles.

Its top-down pixel-art presentation makes it immediately legible as an action adventure, but its rhythm is quicker and less forgiving than the classic-Zelda template. You are encouraged to investigate ruins, search for hidden passages, and interpret a world that communicates much through atmosphere and fragments rather than long explanations.

When it is the right follow-up

Pick Hyper Light Drifter if you want Elementallis’ secrets and discovery without needing a conventional dungeon loop. It is particularly suitable for players who enjoy mastering movement and attacks, repeating difficult encounters, and piecing together an ambiguous setting.

GamesRadar lists it for Xbox One and Series, PlayStation 4 and 5, PC, and Switch.

Puyo Puyo Tetris - Nintendo Switch
  • Ferocious Competition - At the heart of Puyo Puyo Tetris is the fighting spirit of players competing against each other to be most clever, cunning, and quick-witted one to set up devastating attacks on opponents. It's the classic easy-to-learn puzzles mashed up into a multiplayer battle like no other!

  • There's also an in-game shop players can use their points to unlock different Puyo and Tetrimino skins, background music, stages, and more.

If puzzles matter more than combat

Choose Chicory: A Colorful Tale. Its brush-based interactions make creativity the main progression language, and its story is more prominent than in a combat-led adventure.

If restoration and magical abilities are the appeal

Choose Okami HD. Its brush powers, mystical encounters, and world-repair theme provide the closest thematic alternative, even though the camera and scale are different.

If you want harder fights

Choose Death’s Door for a focused, challenging action loop, or Hyper Light Drifter if you also want faster movement and a more demanding learning curve.

If camera perspective matters

Tunic, Chicory, and Hyper Light Drifter stay closest to a top-down presentation. Death’s Door uses an isometric action view. Okami HD is the outlier with a stylized third-person 3D camera.

Platform and edition checks before you buy

Elementallis’ platform information is split across its listings. Nintendo identifies the Switch release as digital. Steam lists Windows, macOS, and Linux. The publisher lists Steam, GOG, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One and Series. Those listings establish availability categories, not permanent regional inventory or pricing.

  • Confirm the exact console generation: a listing for PlayStation 4/5 or Xbox One/Series may cover both generations, but performance and download versions can differ.
  • On PC, check whether the store page supports your operating system; Steam’s Elementallis listing names Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • For Switch, verify that you are buying the digital edition you expect rather than assuming a physical release.
  • Check your local storefront for current price, language support, age rating, and any edition-specific content, since those details can change by region and date.

Bottom line: which game should you play first?

Play Tunic first if your ideal follow-up to Elementallis is another compact, secret-filled Zelda-style adventure. Choose Chicory: A Colorful Tale for inventive puzzles and an emotionally led story, Okami HD for a mythic restoration epic, Death’s Door for combat challenge, and Hyper Light Drifter for fast, mysterious exploration with demanding fights. Each preserves a different part of Elementallis’ appeal; none duplicates its specific combination of elemental restoration, eight temples, and ability-gated biomes.
