The closest overall alternative to Dragon’s Dogma 2 is Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. It shares the series’ vocation-based action combat, giant-monster encounters and Pawn system. If you want a different take, choose Elden Ring for open-world discovery and demanding combat, Monster Hunter Rise or Monster Hunter: World for preparation and boss-sized creatures, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning for accessible build experimentation, or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for a strongly authored story with switchable party members.
No other game reproduces Dragon’s Dogma 2’s exact combination of physical real-time combat, climbable monsters, vocation changes and recruitable AI Pawns. The best match depends on which of those elements matters most to you.

What makes Dragon’s Dogma 2 unusual?
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a single-player fantasy RPG built around three systems that rarely appear together. Combat is fully real time and physical: positioning, timing, stamina, weapon reach and environmental opportunities matter more than selecting commands from a menu. Large enemies are not merely health bars; encounters invite you to exploit terrain, enemy behavior and openings created by your party.

Character development uses vocations rather than a single permanent class. Capcom’s official manual identifies Fighter, Mage, Archer and Thief as the starting vocations. Each has a distinct playstyle, and you can change vocation at a vocation guild instead of restarting the character.
#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories.
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
- Pre-order Bonus: Superior Weapons Quartet
The third pillar is the Pawn party. PlayStation’s official game description calls Pawns “AI companions devoted to serving the Arisen.” You customize a main Pawn, then hire two additional Pawns, giving the Arisen a party of up to three companions. Pawns are not silent stat bonuses: the manual documents commands that spread them across a battlefield and direct them toward chests, mechanisms, gathering locations or suggested tasks while exploring.
That combination explains why ordinary open-world RPGs are only partial substitutes. A game may match the combat but lack a persistent AI party, or provide companions but replace emergent exploration with authored quests and fixed character roles.

1. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen — the closest match
If your question is “What game is most like Dragon’s Dogma 2?”, start here. Dark Arisen is the earlier entry in the same design lineage, so it preserves the ideas that make the sequel distinctive: vocation-based action combat, a fantasy world designed for dangerous travel and the Pawn system.
Why it matches
- You fight in real time with distinct weapon and magic styles rather than relying on turn-based commands.
- Vocations shape your abilities and encourage experimenting with different combat roles.
- Pawns form a persistent AI party, making preparation and party composition part of ordinary exploration.
- Large monsters are physical encounters in which climbing, positioning and coordinated attacks matter.
Where it differs
It is not a visual or systems-identical replacement for the newer game. Menus, presentation, quest design and the scale of the world reflect an older release. Choose it for the underlying design philosophy, not for matching the sequel’s exact interface or content.
2. Elden Ring — for open-world discovery and demanding combat
Elden Ring is the strongest recommendation if the part you love most is leaving the road, finding a hidden area and learning a difficult real-time fight. Its open world, optional dungeons and broad selection of melee weapons, shields, spells and status effects support extensive build experimentation.
What carries over
- Combat is immediate and timing-sensitive, with meaningful spacing, dodging, blocking and resource management.
- Exploration regularly reveals optional encounters, shortcuts and environmental advantages.
- Bosses demand observation and adaptation rather than a fixed rotation.
What does not
Elden Ring does not reproduce a recruitable, persistent Pawn party. Its companion-like options are spirit summons and multiplayer, which are different systems: a spirit is a summon with a defined role, while multiplayer depends on other players. You do not assemble three customizable AI adventurers who comment on the world, learn from their travels or receive task commands. Pick Elden Ring when solo discovery and combat mastery outweigh party simulation.

- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
3. Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter: World — for preparation and giant creatures
Choose either Monster Hunter Rise or Monster Hunter: World if the most memorable Dragon’s Dogma 2 moments for you are studying a large creature, preparing the right equipment and exploiting an opening. These games make the hunt itself the central activity.
The shared appeal
- Each weapon has a deep moveset that rewards practice and deliberate positioning.
- Hunters gather materials, craft equipment and prepare for a specific target.
- Large-monster behavior, readable tells and changing terrain make every hunt a combat puzzle.
The structural trade-off
Monster Hunter is mission-based. You select a hunt, enter an area, track or confront the target, gather materials and return to prepare for the next assignment. That loop is more focused than Dragon’s Dogma 2’s continuous road travel and spontaneous encounters.
The companion model is also different. Hunting companions and multiplayer support the hunt, but they are not a main Pawn plus two hired Pawns with broad exploration commands. These games are best for weapon mastery and monster ecology, not for an AI adventuring party.
4. Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning — for accessible fantasy action and flexible builds
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning suits readers who want a bright fantasy setting, responsive action and freedom to reshape a character’s abilities without committing to one narrow class. Its ability and class systems make experimentation approachable, and its quest structure offers a large amount of traditional RPG content.
Why it may feel familiar
- Combat is real time and easy to read, with distinct weapon categories and active abilities.
- Character development supports hybrid approaches instead of forcing a single archetype.
- Exploration moves through broad zones filled with quests, enemies and loot.
Why it is not a direct substitute
Its world, encounter design and companion features are less like-for-like. The game does not center on Dragon’s Dogma 2’s physical interaction with giant monsters or its Pawn-directed party. Choose it when build flexibility and approachable fantasy action matter more than emergent party behavior.

5. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — for real-time combat and an authored party
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the right alternative for players who want active combat while constantly switching among distinctive party members in a heavily character-driven adventure. Battles combine direct control with commands for allies, and each member contributes a different combat identity.

- The deep, explorable fantasy world of Dragon's Dogma... Dragon's Dogma is a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG that challenges players to shape their own experience—from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, and their party, to how they approach various situations and much more.
Its strongest overlap
- Combat happens in real time, but you can switch characters to exploit their different abilities.
- A full party creates tactical decisions about roles, abilities and timing.
- The world includes exploration and optional activities alongside major story sequences.
Its key difference
Rebirth’s companions are authored characters with fixed identities and personal story arcs. Progression, regions and major encounters are arranged around a strongly written narrative. That is fundamentally different from Dragon’s Dogma 2’s emergent travel, where customizable Pawns can be hired, directed and used as practical tools during exploration.

For the closest overall feel
Pick Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. It is the only option here that shares both the vocation framework and the Pawn concept.
For the most demanding open-world fights
Pick Elden Ring. Its combat is less party-oriented, but it offers the strongest combination of open-ended discovery and high-pressure melee or magic encounters.
For the deepest large-monster preparation
Pick Monster Hunter Rise or Monster Hunter: World. Their missions make equipment planning and weapon proficiency the central progression loop.
For easier class experimentation
Pick Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. Its flexible abilities are more immediately approachable than a system built around learning several specialized vocations.
For a switchable, story-led party
Pick Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It provides authored companions with real-time role switching, but not the autonomous Pawn behavior.

- On your journey, you’ll be joined by Pawns, mysterious otherworldly beings, in an adventure so unique you will feel as if accompanied by other players while on your own adventure.
- All of these elements are elevated further by the latest in graphics, artificial intelligence (AI), and physics technology to create a truly immersive fantasy world in Dragon's Dogma 2.
Which games have companions like Pawns?
Among these recommendations, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the only close match. Its Pawns are persistent AI adventurers rather than temporary summons or purely scripted party members.
That distinction matters in practice. In Dragon’s Dogma 2, a Pawn can contribute during a fight, point the group toward a chest or mechanism, gather at a suggested location and be replaced when you hire another. The system turns party management into part of exploration. Elden Ring offers spirit summons, but they are summonable combat assistance rather than a three-companion traveling party. Monster Hunter provides hunting partners and multiplayer options, while Rebirth gives you named characters whose behavior and development are authored by the story.
How to choose your next RPG
- Define the feature you would miss most. If it is Pawns and vocations, choose Dark Arisen. If it is discovering a huge map, choose Elden Ring. If it is learning weapons and hunting monsters, choose Monster Hunter.
- Decide whether you want a continuous world. Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Elden Ring emphasize travel and discovery. Monster Hunter organizes play into missions, while Rebirth and Amalur use more structured regions and quests.
- Choose your companion relationship. Select AI party management with Dark Arisen, temporary summons with Elden Ring, hunting partners with Monster Hunter or authored characters with Rebirth.
- Match the story style. Dragon’s Dogma 2 favors emergent incidents during a fantasy journey. Rebirth puts character and plot at the center; Monster Hunter puts the hunt first; Elden Ring leaves more of its world’s meaning for you to uncover.
Dragon’s Dogma 2’s scale and why its design remains distinctive
PlayStation describes Dragon’s Dogma 2 as a journey through two dangerous kingdoms where enemies react to the player’s tricks and the environment can be used against large monsters. Those details explain why comparisons based only on “open-world RPG” miss the point: the game is about improvising with a party while the world reacts.
Capcom’s April 2, 2024 investor release reported 2.5 million units sold for Dragon’s Dogma 2 and stated that the Dragon’s Dogma series had exceeded 10 million cumulative units. Those figures describe commercial reach, not a quality score or a guarantee that another game will feel identical, but they show that the Pawn-and-vocation formula has a substantial audience.
