Games Like DOOM (2016) with Heavy-Metal Soundtracks and Fast Combat

If you want DOOM (2016)-style speed with metal doing more than sitting quietly in the background, start with Metal: Hellsinger. It is the closest match because shooting on the beat improves your performance and its original songs feature metal vocalists including Serj Tankian, Randy Blythe and Alissa White-Gluz. Choose BPM: Bullets Per Minute for a harder roguelike interpretation in which firing, reloading, jumping and dodging follow the beat. Keep DOOM (2016) itself as the control reference when you want relentless arena combat without mandatory musical timing.

The three games share aggression and speed, but they deliver that feeling differently: DOOM is an authored campaign built around fluid movement, Metal: Hellsinger is a rhythm-FPS campaign organized around songs, and BPM turns beat accuracy into the foundation of repeatable roguelike runs.

The three best matches at a glance

Game How music affects play Combat and structure Best for Platforms covered by the cited listings
Metal: Hellsinger Shooting on the beat enhances gameplay; songs are built around metal vocals. Fast first-person combat in a song-driven campaign. Players who want literal metal vocals and rhythm-enhanced gunplay. Xbox Series X|S and PC.
BPM: Bullets Per Minute Firing, reloading, jumping and dodging are tied to the beat. Procedurally generated dungeons, bosses and repeatable roguelike runs. Players who enjoy strict timing, high difficulty and build variety. Xbox One and Xbox Series; Steam and PlayStation listings are also available.
DOOM (2016) Music drives atmosphere, not mandatory input timing. Authored campaign, weapon upgrades, arena encounters and glory-kill-style melee finishers. Players who want maximum speed and aggression with conventional shooter controls. Xbox One and Xbox Series listings.

These are not interchangeable versions of the same formula. The deciding question is whether the soundtrack should merely energize your decisions, improve attacks when you stay on-beat, or dictate the timing of nearly every action.

Metal: Hellsinger is the closest match for metal plus FPS speed

Why it fits

The official Xbox description calls Metal: Hellsinger a rhythm FPS in which the ability to shoot on the beat enhances the gameplay experience. That makes it the clearest recommendation for someone who describes the soundtrack as part of the reason to play, rather than as background noise during a conventional shooter.

#1 Best Overall
DOOM Eternal: Standard Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Gain access to the latest demon-killing Tech with the DOOM Slayer's advanced praetor suit, including a shoulder-mounted flamethrower and the retractable wrist-mounted DOOM Blade
  • Upgraded guns and mods, such as the Super shotgun's new distance-closing meat hook attachment, and abilities like the double Dash make you faster, stronger, and more versatile than ever
  • You can't Kill demons when you're Dead, and you can't stay alive without resources. These tools are the key to your survival and becoming the ultimate demon-slayer
  • A new class of (destructible) demon
  • Battle mode is the new 2 versus 1 multiplayer experience built from the ground up at id software

The original soundtrack includes vocals from Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Randy Blythe of Lamb of God and Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy. Those performances give the game a recognizably metal identity instead of relying only on generic industrial percussion.

How the rhythm system changes combat

Your weapon fire is most effective when it lands on the song’s pulse. Staying in time builds the game’s momentum and lets the soundtrack progress through its song structure. The result is still a first-person shooter, but your trigger discipline is also musical timing: firing early, late or randomly is less effective than learning the beat and making your attacks fit it.

This is a gentler entry point than BPM for many DOOM players because the premise is not simply “stop and listen.” You are still moving through combat spaces, changing weapons and attacking targets at speed. The rhythm layer rewards consistency rather than replacing the shooter fundamentals.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it when recognizable metal singers matter as much as weapon feel.
  • Choose it when you want a structured campaign rather than an endless sequence of randomized runs.
  • Choose it if you like the idea of rhythm bonuses but do not want every movement input to be a timing test.

The trade-off is fundamental: if you dislike rhythm mechanics, the feature that makes Metal: Hellsinger distinctive can make it feel less like DOOM. You can move quickly, but you cannot treat the soundtrack as completely optional if you want the strongest combat performance.

Rank #2
Doom (Greatest Hits) (PS4)
  • Developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre, DOOM returns as a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience. Combine your arsenal of futuristic and iconic guns and upgrades, to knock-down, slash, stomp, crush, and blow apart demons. Return of multiplayer: dominate your opponents in doom's signature, fast-paced arena-style combat. BPM: Bullets Per Minute is the strictest and most replayable rhythm option

What makes it different

BPM stands for a much more demanding interpretation of beat-driven combat. Its official description says that all of your actions and the actions of your enemies are tied to the beat. Shooting and reloading follow musical timing, while jumping and dodging also have to be incorporated into the rhythm of an encounter.

That design creates a distinctive loop. You are not only aiming at enemies; you are reading attack patterns, reserving movement for the next beat and maintaining a timing sequence while the room becomes more dangerous. The game adds double jumps, dashes, rocket jumps and bunny hops, so mobility is an active part of the rhythm rather than a separate movement system.

Roguelike structure and build variety

Unlike DOOM’s authored campaign, BPM uses randomly generated dungeons. Each run changes the route, rooms and available upgrades, and failure sends you back into another attempt. The game lists ten characters, more than 60 items and boss fights, giving you multiple ways to alter a run’s weapons, survivability and movement.

Its soundtrack is described as an epic rock opera. That is a different presentation from Metal: Hellsinger’s named guest vocalists, but it serves the same broad desire for forceful music that is synchronized with combat.

Rank #3
DOOM Eternal: Standard Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Developed by id Software, DOOM Eternal is the direct sequel to the award-winning and best-selling DOOM (2016)
  • Hell’s armies have invaded Earth; Become the Slayer in an epic single player campaign to conquer demons across dimensions and stop the final destruction of humanity
  • Experience the ultimate combination of speed and power in DOOM Eternal: the next leap in push forward, first person combat
  • Discover the Slayer’s origins and his enduring mission to RAZE HELL

Who should choose it

  • Choose BPM when repeated runs are more appealing than a fixed level sequence.
  • Choose it when you want timing to govern firing, reloading and movement, not merely provide a damage bonus.
  • Choose it if you enjoy learning through failure and building a stronger run from randomly offered items.

BPM is the least forgiving recommendation here. Missing a beat can interrupt your attack, reload or escape, and procedural layouts remove the certainty of memorized arena routes. Its challenge is the point, but it makes the game a poor fit if you want DOOM’s freedom without rhythmic precision.

DOOM (2016) remains the control reference

Why it belongs on a list of alternatives

DOOM (2016), released on May 13, 2016, is the benchmark for the movement and aggression these other games are trying to evoke. The Xbox product description emphasizes “fast, fluid movement,” relentless demons, destructive guns and intense first-person combat.

Its campaign is authored rather than procedurally generated. You learn encounters, explore spaces for upgrades and use a broad arsenal to control distance. Weapon improvements, suit upgrades and an advanced melee system support a loop in which close-range finishers can knock down, slash, stomp, crush or blow apart demons. None of those actions requires you to fire on a musical beat.

When the original is the better choice

  • Pick DOOM when you want the fastest conventional controls and the least interference between your intent and the trigger.
  • Pick it when you prefer a designed campaign with deliberate arenas, secrets and progression.
  • Pick it when heavy music should establish mood while your decisions remain entirely tactical.

DOOM is therefore not the “rhythm” choice, but it is the clearest answer for a reader whose real priority is speed, aggression and constant forward pressure. Metal: Hellsinger and BPM add timing rules; DOOM supplies the unfiltered movement baseline.

Rank #4
Chronos: Before the Ashes - PlayStation 4 (PS4)
  • Adventure RPG - refreshing combination of adventure game elements and RPG mechanics
  • deep combat - A variety of weapons, abilities and powers are available to the player in the pursuit of their quest
  • unique aging mechanic - every time the player dies they Age one year. Players must adapt to their advancing Age as they progress their character
  • starting the game young, nimble and quick, and ending wise and more attuned to magic

How the three games differ in the ways that matter

Background soundtrack versus timing system

In DOOM, the soundtrack supports the violence without telling you when to press a button. Metal: Hellsinger rewards attacks that land with the beat, so musical awareness improves combat. BPM makes the beat a governing rule for firing, reloading, jumping and dodging. If you want to listen casually, choose DOOM; if you want the music to improve your attacks, choose Metal: Hellsinger; if you want the music to control your execution, choose BPM.

Authored campaign versus repeatable runs

DOOM offers a fixed campaign structure. Metal: Hellsinger also presents a campaign, but its progression is organized around songs and their escalating rhythm. BPM is built for repetition: procedural dungeons, character selection, item combinations and bosses make each run a new problem.

Movement and combat feel

DOOM’s speed comes from fluid traversal, weapon switching and aggressive range management. Metal: Hellsinger preserves that first-person intensity while asking you to synchronize attacks. BPM adds more explicit movement timing through dashes, double jumps, rocket jumps and bunny hops. The faster you want to move while maintaining accuracy, the more important your sense of the beat becomes in the two rhythm games.

The US Xbox page displayed Metal: Hellsinger at $39.99 or more when checked on October 18, 2026. That is a retailer listing captured on that date, not a permanent price. No comparable current price was established for DOOM (2016) or BPM, so any lower figure you see for those games should be checked directly at the store rather than inferred from this guide.

Practical tips for starting a rhythm shooter

  1. Listen before forcing speed. Spend an early encounter identifying the steady pulse. Accuracy improves when you recognize the beat instead of reacting to every sound effect.
  2. Separate aiming from timing. Keep your crosshair on the target first, then make the trigger pull fit the pulse. Trying to solve both problems independently can cause you to fire wildly.
  3. Learn reload windows. In BPM especially, a reload is not a neutral pause. Treat the reload beat as part of your attack pattern and move only when the timing allows it.
  4. Use movement deliberately. Dashes, double jumps and bunny hops are strongest when they avoid an incoming attack without breaking your firing rhythm. Unplanned movement can make you miss both the enemy and the beat.
  5. Lower difficulty before abandoning the idea. If a song feels too fast, a more forgiving setting can let you learn its cadence before attempting harder encounters.
  6. Use headphones if possible. Clear separation between percussion, vocals and enemy effects makes it easier to identify the pulse, especially when several enemies attack at once.

Why other fast shooters are not ranked equally here

Games such as Ghostrunner, ULTRAKILL, Turbo Overkill, Prodeus and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun may appeal to people who value speed or retro-inspired first-person combat. However, the official material available for this comparison does not establish equally strong evidence for their heavy-metal soundtrack identity. They should not be presented as direct matches for the specific combination of metal music and fast combat without checking each game’s current soundtrack and platform information.

Which one should you play?

  • Pick Metal: Hellsinger for the most literal answer to “DOOM-like shooter with metal vocals.” Its beat-enhanced shooting is central, but the campaign format remains approachable to players coming from conventional arena shooters.
  • Pick BPM: Bullets Per Minute for the deepest rhythm challenge, procedural replayability and a larger emphasis on timing every action.
  • Pick DOOM (2016) for the purest fast-combat experience, a designed campaign and heavy music that never requires you to synchronize your trigger pulls.

The choice is less about which game is fastest in the abstract and more about how much authority you want to give the soundtrack. DOOM lets you fight at your own tempo, Metal: Hellsinger rewards you for matching the song, and BPM asks you to make the song part of your movement and survival.
