What makes Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed unusual?
Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is not simply a mascot platformer. It places Mickey in Wasteland, a realm populated by forgotten Disney characters, including Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The September 24, 2024 release combines colorful 3D platforming with a world that can look damaged, abandoned and slightly unsettling.

2. Psychonauts 2: the best match for surreal worlds and story
Choose Psychonauts 2 when the atmosphere and narrative of Wasteland mattered more than the Disney license. Double Fine lists it as a platformer/adventure released August 25, 2021. You play Razputin Aquato, a trained acrobat and young psychic who joins the Psychonauts. Much of the adventure takes place inside imaginative minds, where visual metaphors become places to explore and problems to solve.
This is the closest recommendation for the feeling that a cheerful exterior is hiding something damaged. Rebrushed turns a forgotten animation world into a place with history, abandoned inhabitants and an undercurrent of sadness. Psychonauts 2 does something comparable with mental worlds: each setting has its own visual logic, characters and emotional problem. The result is stranger and more dialogue-driven, but it rewards players who want a platformer with a memorable cast and a story that takes its odd premise seriously.
The central conflict involves a conspiracy and the psychic villain Maligula. Raz uses psychic powers rather than paint and thinner, and those powers serve movement, combat and puzzle solving. You will not restore a bridge with a brush or erase a wall to reveal a secret; instead, you interpret a mind’s visual rules and apply the right ability to move forward.

Pick Psychonauts 2 if you describe your ideal follow-up as “a colorful 3D platformer with a slightly dark story.” It is also the safest choice when you play on PC, Xbox or a Mac/Linux system and cannot use the PS5-only alternatives.
3. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: the action-heavy option
Choose Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart if you want to keep the colorful 3D exploration but increase the combat and gadget work. PlayStation describes an interdimensional adventure starring Ratchet and Clank, with explosive weapons, traversal gadgets, puzzles and dimensional rifts. The cited listing is a PS5 single-player campaign.
Its worlds are as colorful and kinetic as those in Rebrushed, but the emphasis changes. In Wasteland, deciding whether to use paint or thinner can alter the environment and your route. In Rift Apart, the main decisions are tactical: which weapon fits the enemy, when to use a gadget, and how to move through a rift or around an arena. Alternate versions of planets and rapid transitions between dimensions provide the sense of spectacle that Rebrushed gets from its transforming, storybook-like settings.
The game is a better fit for players who found Mickey’s combat too light or wanted more mechanical depth between platforming sections. It is a weaker fit if you mainly enjoyed collecting pins, restoring scenery or following the consequences of aesthetic choices. The weapons and gadgets expand your options during fights, not your ability to rewrite the world’s appearance.

If you want to change the level itself
Rebrushed is the only game in this group built around a paint-versus-thinner choice. Paint can restore beauty, create objects and repair parts of the setting; thinner can alter or remove them and expose secrets. Neither ASTRO BOT, Psychonauts 2 nor Rift Apart offers an equivalent system. Their abilities change what the player can do, while Mickey’s tools can change what the environment is.
If exploration matters more than combat
ASTRO BOT is the clearest choice. Its more-than-50-planet structure and collectible cameos put discovery at the center. Psychonauts 2 also rewards exploration, but its mental worlds are tied closely to story and puzzles. Rift Apart offers exploration between encounters, yet its arsenal and combat arenas receive more attention.

Choose Psychonauts 2. Its premise, cast and conspiracy are central to the journey, and the worlds function as expressions of character and conflict. Rebrushed has meaningful choices and multiple endings, but its appeal is split between platforming, environmental experimentation and Disney history.

If you want the most action
Choose Rift Apart. Its explosive weapons, gadgets and rift traversal make combat a primary activity. ASTRO BOT includes combat, but its design remains platforming-first. Psychonauts 2 uses combat as one part of a broader story-and-puzzle adventure.
If you want nostalgia and collectibles
Rebrushed remains the only option with virtual Disney pins and classic-film-inspired levels. ASTRO BOT is the nearest substitute for character-spotting, with more than 150 PlayStation heroes appearing as collectible cameos. That is a different kind of nostalgia, not a replacement for Disney characters.
Platform and edition considerations
The original Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is cited across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC editions, making it the broadest starting point if you are choosing by hardware.
