Games Like Deck of Haunts: The Best Haunted-House and Deck-Building Alternatives

What should you play after Deck of Haunts? Choose Betrayal at House on the Hill if the haunted-mansion fantasy, hidden information and dramatic haunt scenarios matter most. Choose Slay the Spire for the deepest traditional solo deckbuilding, Monster Train for tactical battlefield construction and layered upgrades, or Inscryption for psychological horror, puzzles and a stranger story.

Deck of Haunts is unusual because you are the haunted house itself. You lure people into cursed rooms, arrange the mansion, play cards that summon entities or alter spaces, push visitors toward madness and defend the Heart room. The alternatives below each preserve a different part of that formula, so the best choice depends on whether you want the setting, the cards, the construction, the social tension or the horror.

What makes Deck of Haunts different?

Deck of Haunts released on Steam on 7 May 2025. Its central reversal is simple but powerful: instead of entering a haunted building, you operate it. Humans are the resources and targets moving through your layout, while rooms, spirits and card effects form the tools you use to control their route.

The official description presents a hybrid of card game, roguelite, horror, tower defense, base building, turn-based strategy and deckbuilding. Those labels describe separate layers that interact during a run:

  • House layout: you build and customize a mansion, deciding how rooms connect and where visitors encounter danger.
  • Card play: cards can summon spirits or change rooms, giving each turn a tactical choice rather than a fixed sequence of traps.
  • Visitor pressure: the goal is to drive intruders toward madness while managing the path they take through the house.
  • Heart protection: the Heart room is the critical point to defend, adding a tower-defense-like failure condition to the deckbuilder loop.
  • Roguelite progression: runs, missions and unlocks give the format replay value beyond one handcrafted scenario.

A developer announcement dated 24 September 2026 said console editions would launch on 8 October 2026 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The announcement described more than a year of added cards, rooms, creatures, missions and progression systems, along with expanded room-building, Nightmare Mode, curated scenarios and controller improvements. If you are checking a storefront after that date, verify the edition and regional listing because platform availability and content can change.

Steam’s crawl snapshot showed 84% positive from 1,262 all-time reviews and 76% positive from 56 recent reviews. Those figures are time-specific snapshots, not permanent ratings; the recent sample is also much smaller than the all-time total.

1. Betrayal at House on the Hill: the closest haunted-house fantasy

Pick this when you care most about exploring a mansion, discovering secrets and watching a horror scenario turn against the group. Betrayal at House on the Hill is a physical multiplayer board game, not a digital roguelike deckbuilder, but it is the strongest thematic alternative to Deck of Haunts.

How its mansion works

Players construct the house as they explore it, placing modular room tiles to create a different floor plan from game to game. Omen cards build tension and eventually trigger a haunt roll. Once the haunt begins, one player may become a traitor while the others try to survive, although the rules also include cooperative scenarios.

That structure captures the parts of Deck of Haunts that a conventional card game cannot: the building is physically present on the table, information is revealed gradually, and the story can split the group into competing roles. Every new tile can change movement options, line of sight and the sense of where danger might appear.

Rank #2
Hasbro Gaming Avalon Hill Betrayal at The House on The Hill Second Edition Cooperative Board Game, Ages 12 and Up, 3-6 Players, 50 Chilling Scenarios
  • RE-PLAYABLE NARRATIVE BOARD GAME: Tile by tile, terror by terror, build their own haunted mansion and then try to escape it alive. The game is for 3-6 players and takes about 60 minutes to play
  • MODULAR BOARD PIECES: The Betrayal at House on the Hill tabletop game features 50 blood-curdling scenarios. Each trip to the house promises fresh horrors and a new story is created every time you play
  • HAUNTED HOUSE TRAITOR GAME: Players must work together to survive the nightmare…but beware! The house turns one player against the others in this cooperative strategy game
  • MINIATURES BOARD GAME: This second edition of Betrayal at House on the Hill includes 6 pre-painted plastic explorer figures, 80 cards, 149 tokens, 44 room tiles, 2 haunt books, and more
  • IMMERSIVE NARRATIVE: Get ready for an unpredictable and thrilling exploration of the haunted house. Encounter witches, dragons, zombies, and other spooky and bizarre B-movie horror clichés

What it shares with Deck of Haunts

  • A modular haunted-house setting rather than a generic fantasy map.
  • Room-by-room discovery and a changing layout.
  • Escalating supernatural events that reshape the objective.
  • Horror scenarios in which the house itself is the source of pressure.

What it does not share

You do not play a run-based digital deckbuilder, arrange a defensive engine around a Heart room or manage a deck whose cards directly remodel a base. The card system supports exploration, character abilities and scenario events. The game also needs a group and a physical play space, so it is a poor substitute if you want a solo experience you can start immediately.

Who should choose it?

Choose Betrayal at House on the Hill if your favorite thought in Deck of Haunts is “What will the next room reveal?” rather than “How do I optimize this draw?” It is also the right pick for friends who want conversation, bluffing and a memorable reveal more than repeatable solo runs. Expect a board-game session with social negotiation and variable scenarios, not a direct mechanical replacement.

2. Slay the Spire: the purest deckbuilding alternative

Pick this when the card engine, route decisions and replayable solo climbs matter more than the haunted-house theme. Slay the Spire, released in 2019, is the benchmark for run-based digital deckbuilding. Its design focuses on building a small, coherent deck while choosing a path through changing encounters, elites, events and bosses.

Why its card system is the closest match

Each run asks you to make incremental decisions with incomplete information. You choose which cards to add, remove or upgrade, decide whether a relic is worth changing your plan and select a route that balances rewards against danger. Enemies and bosses vary from climb to climb, so the same opening deck can develop in different directions.

This is the part of Deck of Haunts to seek if you enjoy drawing a hand, evaluating several imperfect plays and gradually turning a fragile strategy into a reliable machine. Slay the Spire is more concentrated: nearly every system exists to sharpen combat and deck decisions, without a house layout competing for attention.

Important differences

  • No haunted mansion: the map is a route through a spire, not a set of rooms you build.
  • No base defense: there is no Heart room or visitor path to protect.
  • Less narrative horror: the mood is adventurous and fantastical rather than psychological or architectural.
  • Single-player focus: it is designed around personal decisions and repeatable climbs.

Who should choose it?

Choose Slay the Spire if you want the clearest answer to “What should I play after Deck of Haunts for better deckbuilding?” It teaches the fundamentals of deck quality, thinning, energy management, scaling and route risk without asking you to learn a second construction system at the same time. Players who mainly want room placement, haunted-house fiction or defensive spatial puzzles will find the setting too abstract.

Betrayal Legacy (Board Game, Betrayal at House on The Hill)
  • Beware! In “Legacy” board games, any move you make could come back to haunt you on the next time you play.
  • Unlock the mysteries of the iconic house during a 13-episode campaign. Once all the secrets are revealed, you’ll have a fully replayable, customized board game.
  • With 52 blood-curdling haunts—including 13 that permanently alter your copy of the game—each trip to the house on the hill promises fresh horrors and discoveries.
  • Players must work together to survive the nightmare. . .until the house forces some of you against the rest.

3. Monster Train: tactical construction plus deep upgrades

Pick this when you want to manage a space and a deck at the same time. Monster Train combines route choices and deckbuilding with a battlefield divided into three vertical levels. Enemies advance through the train while your units and spells are arranged across floors, creating a layered defense rather than a single combat lane.

The construction overlap

Monster Train does not let you build a mansion, but it gives spatial decisions real mechanical weight. Where you place a unit determines which enemies it fights, which buffs reach it and how much room remains for later reinforcements. The three-floor structure means a strong deck can still fail if its units are stacked on the wrong level or if damage is delayed on an upper floor.

Its Steam page lists more than 220 cards, 10 starter decks, 25 Covenant difficulty levels and Workshop mod support. Those numbers describe a broad upgrade space: there are many combinations to learn, multiple difficulty steps and community-created ways to extend the game.

How it compares with Deck of Haunts

  • Shared strength: both ask you to think about a physical arrangement while selecting cards.
  • Monster Train’s advantage: multi-lane combat makes placement and timing exceptionally explicit.
  • Deck of Haunts’ advantage: the room layout is part of a haunted-house fantasy, with visitors and a Heart room rather than enemies climbing floors.
  • Tone: Monster Train is dark fantasy and strategic, not an architectural horror story.

Who should choose it?

Choose Monster Train if you enjoyed the idea of turning rooms, creatures and card effects into a defensive system but want more visible combat layering. It is especially suitable for players who like experimenting with factions, upgrades and challenge levels after they understand the basic loop. It is less suitable if the emotional appeal of Deck of Haunts comes from being the villainous building itself.

4. Inscryption: the strongest horror and puzzle alternative

Pick this when atmosphere, mystery and psychological horror matter more than managing a permanent mansion. Inscryption describes itself as a card-based odyssey that combines deckbuilding roguelike play, escape-room puzzles and psychological horror. That combination makes it the most tonally ambitious alternative in this list.

Why the horror feels different

Inscryption uses cards as part of an unsettling environment, not merely as a combat interface. The table, the rules and the surrounding room all contribute to the sense that something is wrong. Puzzles interrupt or reframe the card game, and the story is designed to make you question what layer of the experience you are controlling.

Avalon Hill Betrayal at House on the Hill Widow's Walk Strategy Board Game
  • Expansion. Requires Betrayal House on the Hill
  • Compatible with all editions
  • 50 new haunts, 20 new room tiles, 30 new cards (11 items, 11 events, 8 omens), 78 new tokens
  • Never before explored new floor THE ROOF.

That approach overlaps with Deck of Haunts’ interest in making mechanics express horror. In both games, cards are not detached fantasy abstractions: they are part of the fiction. The difference is agency. Deck of Haunts gives you managerial control over a house and its visitors, while Inscryption places you inside a tightly authored mystery.

Trade-offs for Deck of Haunts players

  • More story and puzzles: expect escape-room-style problems and narrative reveals.
  • Less construction: there is no equivalent to arranging a mansion around a Heart room.
  • More psychological unease: the horror is intimate, surreal and frequently directed at the player.
  • Less open-ended optimization: the experience follows a stronger authored arc than an endless house-building sandbox.

Who should choose it?

Choose Inscryption if you want a horror game that happens to contain a deckbuilder, rather than a deckbuilder decorated with horror. It is the best follow-up for players who remember the mood, secrets and unease of Deck of Haunts more vividly than its room economy.

Which alternative is closest to the part you liked?

If you want to be the haunted house

Stay with Deck of Haunts. None of the alternatives gives you the same role: luring humans into cursed halls, changing the building with cards, driving visitors toward madness and protecting a Heart room. Its distinctiveness comes from combining those responsibilities in one perspective.

If you want to explore a haunted mansion with friends

Choose Betrayal at House on the Hill. Its modular tiles, omen cards, haunt roll and traitor or cooperative scenarios put discovery and social tension ahead of deck optimization.

If you want the best traditional roguelike deckbuilder

Choose Slay the Spire. Its route map, relics, changing enemies and bosses are built around making every card and upgrade decision count across a climb.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want cards plus battlefield engineering

Choose Monster Train. Its three vertical battlefields, five clans, card upgrades and route decisions provide the strongest mechanical overlap with building a defense while refining a deck.

How the four alternatives differ in practice

What you value most Best choice Why Main compromise
Haunted-house exploration Betrayal at House on the Hill Modular rooms, omens and haunt scenarios create a changing mansion. Physical multiplayer board game, not a solo digital deckbuilder.
Efficient card runs Slay the Spire Route selection, relics and enemy variation keep the focus on deck decisions. No mansion, room construction or horror-driven visitor management.
Spatial tactics Monster Train Three floors and clan combinations make placement as important as card choice. Dark fantasy replaces the haunted-house premise.
Psychological horror Inscryption Cards, puzzles and an unsettling story reinforce one another. Less open-ended construction and less long-term base management.

Platform and availability considerations

Deck of Haunts first appeared on Steam on 7 May 2025. The 24 September 2026 developer announcement gave 8 October 2026 as the launch date for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S editions. Because that announcement covers a dated release window rather than every storefront’s current catalog, check the relevant platform store for your region, edition and supported features.

The alternatives have different formats that affect how and where you play:

  • Betrayal at House on the Hill: physical tabletop play; plan for several people, table space and a session long enough to complete a scenario.
  • Slay the Spire: digital single-player format suited to short or extended runs.
  • Monster Train: digital single-player format with extensive challenge progression and Workshop mod support listed on Steam.
  • Inscryption: digital single-player format in which progression, puzzles and story are designed as one authored experience.

No stable cross-platform price comparison is available here. Digital prices vary by currency, platform and sale period, while a physical board game’s cost also depends on edition and retailer. Verify the current listing before buying rather than treating an old price as universal.

A practical buying decision

  1. Identify your non-negotiable. If it is the haunted mansion itself, choose Betrayal at House on the Hill for a group or remain with Deck of Haunts for solo digital play.
  2. Decide whether you want a deckbuilder first. If the answer is yes, Slay the Spire offers the most concentrated card-run experience; Monster Train adds construction and battlefield placement.
  3. Choose your horror style. Architectural and scenario horror points to Betrayal, psychological unease and mystery point to Inscryption, and strategic supernatural management points to Deck of Haunts.
  4. Check player count and format. Betrayal requires a physical group, while the other three digital recommendations are designed for solo play.
  5. Check current platform listings. Confirm the edition, regional availability and controller support on the storefront you intend to use, especially for the console versions announced for October 2026.

Common mistakes when choosing a Deck of Haunts alternative

Assuming every card game is a deckbuilder

Betrayal at House on the Hill uses cards extensively, but its defining systems are exploration, scenario events and the haunt. If you want to tune a deck over repeated runs, Slay the Spire or Monster Train is a closer mechanical fit.

Choosing by horror label alone

Horror can mean several things here. Inscryption emphasizes psychological discomfort and puzzles; Betrayal emphasizes group suspense and a traitor reveal; Deck of Haunts emphasizes controlling a supernatural building. Decide which kind of tension you actually want.

Ignoring the construction question

Deck of Haunts asks you to think about rooms as part of your strategy. Slay the Spire does not replace that with another base system, while Monster Train does replace it with battlefield placement. That distinction should guide your choice as much as genre labels do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading review percentages as permanent verdicts

Storefront scores move as new players review a game. Deck of Haunts’ 84% positive all-time and 76% positive recent Steam snapshots describe the page at the time it was crawled, not a guarantee of your experience or a fixed rating.

Bottom line

Betrayal at House on the Hill is the closest thematic match to Deck of Haunts, Slay the Spire is the best pure deckbuilding substitute, Monster Train is the best choice for tactical construction, and Inscryption is the best horror-and-puzzle alternative. Deck of Haunts remains the only option here that makes you the haunted house, so choose one of the alternatives according to the layer you want to preserve rather than expecting a one-for-one replacement.
