Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the closest next game for most Crimson Desert players because it combines real-time third-person combat, large monsters, open travel and unscripted encounters. Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt if authored quests and character drama matter most, Elden Ring for discovery and punishing bosses, Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic swordplay, or Red Dead Redemption 2 for the most deliberate, immersive world.
Those recommendations make sense once you define what “similar” means. Crimson Desert mixes fast action, broad exploration, puzzles, NPCs, side activities and a story-led journey, so no single game reproduces every part of it.

What kind of game is Crimson Desert?
Crimson Desert is an open-world action adventure set across the continent of Pywel. You play Greymane Kliff as he rebuilds his faction after a devastating attack. The structure combines a character-led campaign with open travel, combat encounters, locations to investigate, quests, ancient puzzles and optional activities.
Recommended Free Tools
PlayStation describes it as “a vast open-world adventure with deep, varied combat, multiple playable characters, numerous quests, NPCs and locations to discover, ancient puzzles to solve and many side activities to engage in.” Pearl Abyss presents the same core as an action-adventure built around weapons, skills, equipment and fast-paced fighting rather than a purely menu-driven role-playing system.

Crimson Desert launched worldwide on March 19, 2026. The release is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Apple Mac, Epic Games Store and ROG Xbox Ally. Pearl Abyss says the game has English, Korean and Chinese voice acting, with subtitles in 14 languages. That broad availability matters when choosing a follow-up: the best match is only useful if it runs on the system you own.
How to choose a game after Crimson Desert
Start with the activity that kept you playing. The games below overlap with Crimson Desert in different ways, not because they are identical packages.
- Active combat: Look for real-time attacks, evasive movement, weapon timing and battles that happen directly in the world.
- Open-world free exploration: Prioritize travel routes, environmental interaction, hidden locations and encounters that are not strictly marked by the main quest.
- Puzzles and discovery: Choose a game that expects you to inspect spaces, interpret clues or find rewards without a complete checklist.
- Quests and characters: Some worlds are driven by authored conversations and side stories rather than systems alone.
- Drops, builds and difficulty: If equipment experimentation and challenging bosses are the appeal, a more demanding action RPG may fit better than a cinematic adventure.
- World simulation and pace: Consider whether you want constant action, a focused journey or slow travel through a world that appears to operate without you.
Best games like Crimson Desert
Dragon’s Dogma 2 — closest combat-and-exploration match
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the strongest first recommendation for a player asking, “What game should I play after CD?” Its third-person RPG combat is immediate and physical, with large enemies that can be climbed, staggered and fought through changing situations. Travel itself produces stories: a route can be interrupted by a monster, an ambush or an unexpected encounter rather than only by a marked objective.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That systemic design makes it especially close to Crimson Desert’s combination of active combat and free exploration. You can approach fights with different vocations and party arrangements, so experimentation affects how encounters unfold. Equipment and abilities matter, but the memorable moments often come from physics, enemy behavior and a plan that goes wrong.
The trade-off is narrative structure. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is less tightly authored than a quest-heavy drama, and its world can feel more like a collection of systems than a continuously directed cinematic campaign. Pick it when you want emergent adventure, large monsters and freedom to improvise; choose another game if written side stories are your priority.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — best for story and quests
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the better follow-up when Crimson Desert’s narrative, regional storytelling and character relationships are what you value most. Its open world is filled with substantial side quests, recurring characters and local conflicts that develop beyond the main route. Wandering is rewarded because a seemingly minor lead can become a carefully written story with its own consequences.
Rank #2
- Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game set in the beautiful yet brutal continent of Pywel. Take on the role of the Greymane Kliff and embark on a journey across the continent to reclaim everything youve lost. Explore uncharted lands, encounter mysterious factions, and experience firsthand a world that is as breathtaking as it is merciless.
Combat is real time, but the game’s defining strength is authored content rather than constant mechanical novelty. Exploration leads to contracts, conversations, treasure and environmental stories, while the landscape connects separate communities into a larger political and personal journey.
Choose The Witcher 3 if you want your next open-world RPG to give every region a narrative identity. It is less suitable if your ideal follow-up is built primarily around acrobatic action, opaque puzzles or difficult boss attempts. Its pace gives dialogue and investigation room to breathe, so the experience feels more like a long fantasy novel you can explore than an uninterrupted combat showcase.
Elden Ring — best for discovery, drops and hard bosses
Elden Ring is the pick for players who want open-world freedom without a fully explained route. Its map encourages you to investigate distant structures, caves and landmarks, often with little certainty about what a location contains. The reward may be a weapon, spell, upgrade material or a boss encounter that changes how you understand your build.
The combat is active and demanding. Timing, stamina, positioning and equipment choices all matter, and experimentation is central: changing weapons, attributes, skills or summons can turn an impossible fight into a manageable one. This makes Elden Ring particularly attractive if “puzzles, drops and active combat” describes your favorite part of Crimson Desert.
The differences are just as important. Elden Ring communicates through implication, environmental clues and fragmented dialogue rather than a conventional quest log that explains every objective. Its presentation is less focused on a cinematic, character-led journey, and failure is a normal part of learning. Pick it for discovery and build depth; avoid it if you want every major story beat clearly signposted.

Ghost of Tsushima — best for focused swordplay and atmosphere
Ghost of Tsushima offers the closest match for responsive sword combat presented with a strong cinematic style. Duels emphasize spacing, attack recognition, parries and stance choices, while the island setting uses weather, color and changing landscapes to give travel a clear visual identity.

- SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.
The journey is more focused than Crimson Desert’s broad sandbox. Missions, stealth opportunities and combat encounters are arranged around a defined historical-fantasy story, so exploration supports the central journey instead of constantly generating unpredictable detours. You still have reasons to leave the main path, but the structure is easier to read.
Choose Ghost of Tsushima when you want polished swordplay, atmosphere and a clear progression from one dramatic sequence to the next. It is not the best substitute for players who mainly want giant-system experimentation, opaque puzzle solving or the most open-ended quest order.
Red Dead Redemption 2 — best for world immersion
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the recommendation for a slower, more inhabited world. Travel has weight: riding between locations, setting up camp and observing wildlife are part of the experience rather than empty time between missions. Towns, strangers and environmental details create the impression that the world continues whether or not you are pursuing the next objective.

Small interactions, changing weather, wildlife behavior and carefully staged encounters reward attention. The game also uses a character-driven story, but it gives scenes and journeys more time than Crimson Desert’s faster action premise.
The compromise is pace. Gunfights and set pieces exist, yet much of the appeal comes from deliberate movement and observation. Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if immersion and environmental detail matter more than rapid combat repetition. If you want a fight every few minutes, its measured rhythm may feel slow.
At-a-glance comparison
| Game | Combat speed and complexity | Exploration and interaction | Story and side quests | Difficulty and build depth | World pace |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crimson Desert | Fast, varied action with weapons, skills and equipment | Broad exploration, NPCs, puzzles and activities | Faction-led campaign with numerous quests | Not fully characterized by the available description | Action-forward open-world travel |
| Dragon’s Dogma 2 | Real-time third-person combat built around roles and large monsters | Highly systemic travel and unscripted encounters | More emergent than tightly authored | Build and party experimentation are central | Roaming can produce unexpected interruptions |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Real-time combat supporting a story-first RPG | Landscapes and locations reward wandering | Exceptional character-driven side stories | Less focused on boss mastery than Elden Ring | Deliberate investigation and travel |
| Elden Ring | Demanding timing-based action with extensive equipment options | Opaque, highly exploratory world with hidden rewards | Fragmented presentation and limited conventional guidance | High difficulty and deep build experimentation | Exploration is frequently interrupted by danger |
| Ghost of Tsushima | Responsive, stance-based swordplay | Open areas support a more directed journey | Clear cinematic campaign with optional activities | Focused progression rather than extreme build complexity | Stealth and combat encounters follow a designed rhythm |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Action exists but is not the central measure of pace | Extensive environmental interaction and world detail | Strong character-led narrative | Not primarily a build-crafting game | Slow, deliberate travel and observation |
Which Crimson Desert alternative should you play first?
If combat and roaming come first
Start with Dragon’s Dogma 2. It most directly combines third-person action, large enemies and a world that can surprise you while traveling. Its emergent structure also means you should expect stories to come from systems and accidents rather than only from scripted scenes.

- A fast-paced, cinematic action game set on the shape-shifting Carcosa
- Stunning graphics and gameplay
- Master bullet ballet combat
- Experience an unconventional story and journey
If quests and character writing come first
Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Its side quests are substantial enough to stand beside the main story, and its regions are designed to make wandering feel narratively worthwhile.
If you want puzzles, drops and difficult bosses
Choose Elden Ring. The game rarely tells you exactly what is behind the next door, and its rewards support repeated experimentation with weapons, abilities and character builds.
If you want the cleanest sword-fighting presentation
Choose Ghost of Tsushima. It concentrates on readable duels, cinematic staging and a focused journey instead of trying to simulate every type of open-world activity.
If immersion matters more than speed
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2. Its deliberate travel and dense environmental detail make the world feel inhabited, even when no combat is taking place.
Platforms and editions to check
Crimson Desert’s confirmed launch platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Apple Mac, Epic Games Store and ROG Xbox Ally. PlayStation lists standard, deluxe and collector’s physical editions for the PS5 release. Edition contents and availability can differ by territory and retailer, so verify the exact version on the storefront you use.
The five alternatives have different release histories and platform editions. Before buying, check the current listing for your console or computer and confirm whether the edition includes the expansions, upgrades or performance options you want. Availability is not a guarantee that two versions have identical content or technical features.
Bottom line
There is no one-to-one replacement for Crimson Desert because its identity comes from combining fast combat, exploration, puzzles, quests and side activities. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the closest overall match for active third-person adventure; The Witcher 3 is superior for authored stories; Elden Ring for discovery and boss difficulty; Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic swordplay; and Red Dead Redemption 2 for a slower, deeply simulated world.
