Choose ELDEN RING if you want exploration tied to punishing fantasy combat. Choose The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom if your priority is creative traversal across land and sky. Both are strong alternatives for different reasons, but neither is a one-to-one replacement for Crimson Desert.

Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure set in Pywel. Its official descriptions emphasize a seamless realm containing wilderness, cities, ruins, quests, puzzles, activities, horseback travel, climbing and gliding. PlayStation’s feature overview divides that world into five named regions: Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia and the Crimson Desert itself. Pearl Abyss announced the worldwide launch for March 19, 2026. Those details make exploration and movement the useful comparison point—not a claim that another game has identical combat, story or structure.

What makes a good Crimson Desert alternative?

“Games like” can mean several different things. You might want a huge landscape with optional discoveries, a fantasy setting, freedom to approach objectives from different directions, or simply the feeling of leaving a road and finding something worthwhile. Crimson Desert combines those qualities with action-adventure systems, but the balance varies by game.

Use these four questions before choosing:

  • How is exploration structured? Does the world lead to hidden dungeons, environmental puzzles, settlements and side activities, or is it mainly a route between story missions?
  • How often does exploration become combat? Some games make nearly every discovery a demanding fight; others let you travel, experiment and solve problems at your own pace.
  • What atmosphere do you want? Pywel is presented as a fantasy realm with wilderness, cities and ruins. A darker fantasy world can feel very different from a playful adventure even when both are open-world games.
  • Which platform do you need? A recommendation is only useful if it runs on your console or PC. Platform availability can also vary by edition and region.

The two clearest matches below cover different parts of that brief. One emphasizes discovery under pressure; the other emphasizes movement and experimentation.

ELDEN RING: the choice for discovery under pressure

Why it fits

FromSoftware’s ELDEN RING is the strongest recommendation when your favorite part of Crimson Desert is the possibility of riding or walking away from the main route and finding a challenge that was not signposted for you. Its Steam description presents the Lands Between as open fields connected to large, complex dungeons. It also puts exploration, formidable bosses and combat mastery at the center of the experience.

That creates a clear overlap with the exploratory side of Pywel: the world is not just a corridor between cutscenes, and looking beyond the obvious path can lead to substantial discoveries. The important difference is the pressure attached to those discoveries. In ELDEN RING, an interesting ruin, cave or distant landmark commonly implies that you should be ready to fight. Exploration is closely bound to learning enemy patterns, managing resources and improving your build.

Who should choose it

  • You enjoy dark or serious fantasy atmosphere.
  • You want optional areas that can be as demanding as the main route.
  • You are comfortable failing, changing tactics and returning to a challenge later.
  • You prefer a world where combat skill is a major part of progression.

Who should look elsewhere

Do not pick ELDEN RING solely because it is open world if you want a relaxed travel game. Its defining comparison point is not horseback movement, city life or a broad menu of activities; it is the way exploration and combat reinforce each other. Players who mainly want gliding, environmental movement or a lighter sense of experimentation should start with Tears of the Kingdom instead.

Release context

The Steam listing gives ELDEN RING a release date of February 24, 2022. That date identifies the game discussed here; it does not guarantee that every later edition, expansion or platform bundle has the same contents. Confirm the edition and system requirements on the storefront you plan to use.

  • Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
  • Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: the choice for traversal

Why it fits

Nintendo’s Explorer’s Guide describes Hyrule as vast and frames the adventure across land and skies. That makes it the clearest alternative if the appeal of Crimson Desert is not specifically its combat, but the promise of seeing a landmark and deciding how to reach it. You can think of this as a traversal-first comparison: the question is how much of the world opens up when you experiment with routes, height and terrain.

The comparison has limits. The guide supports a statement about Hyrule’s scale and land-and-sky journey; it does not establish that the combat, tone or narrative structure matches Pywel. Treat Tears of the Kingdom as a game that shares the desire to roam and discover, not as a substitute with the same action design.

Who should choose it

  • You want movement and route-finding to be central rather than incidental.
  • You enjoy discovering places by looking above, below and beyond the marked path.
  • You prefer a more playful adventure tone than a relentlessly grim fantasy setting.
  • You want exploration that can be driven by curiosity instead of a high combat threshold.

The platform decision

This is a Nintendo game. It will not meet the needs of someone shopping specifically for a PlayStation, Xbox or PC title. Check which Nintendo hardware and edition you own before treating it as an option. Platform is not a minor footnote here: it determines whether the recommendation is usable at all.

How the worlds differ from Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert sets the baseline with a seamless world in Pywel. Pearl Abyss and PlayStation describe a combination of wilderness, cities and ruins across Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia and the Crimson Desert. Quests, puzzles and activities sit alongside horseback travel, climbing and gliding. The launch announcement on March 19, 2026, also highlights movement through that connected world.

  • A New Fantasy World – Journey through the Lands Between, a new fantasy world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the influential Dark Souls video game series, and George R. R. Martin, author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Unravel the mysteries of the Elden Ring’s power. Encounter adversaries with profound backgrounds, characters with their own unique motivations for helping or hindering your progress, and fearsome creatures
  • World Exploration in the Lands Between – Elden Ring features vast fantastical landscapes and shadowy, complex dungeons that are connected seamlessly. Traverse the breathtaking world on foot or on horseback, alone or online with other players, and fully immerse yourself in the grassy plains, suffocating swamps, spiraling mountains, foreboding castles and other sites of grandeur on a scale never seen before in a FromSoftware title
  • Genre-Defining Gameplay – Create your character in FromSoftware’s refined action-RPG and define your playstyle by experimenting with a wide variety of weapons, magical abilities, and skills found throughout the world. Charge into battle, pick off enemies one-by-one using stealth, or even call upon allies for aid. Many options are at your disposal as you decide how to approach exploration and combat

ELDEN RING narrows the match toward discovery and challenge. Its open fields and large dungeons support the feeling of finding more than the critical path, but its official store description places formidable bosses and combat mastery in the foreground.

Tears of the Kingdom narrows the match in the opposite direction. The strongest supported connection is the freedom to travel across land and sky in a vast environment. The available description does not justify promises about matching Crimson Desert’s combat, city design or tone.

Other names readers often bring up

Red Dead Redemption 2

Reader discussions about games similar to Crimson Desert often mention Red Dead Redemption 2 when the desired feature is a large world with room to wander. That makes it a reasonable lead for readers who value landscape and incidental discovery. The material available for this comparison does not verify a current edition, platform list or exact feature-by-feature fit, so check those details before purchasing.

Fallout

Fallout is another recurring suggestion in reader conversations about open-ended exploration. The name covers multiple games with different structures and settings, so “play Fallout” is not a precise recommendation. Identify the particular entry first, then confirm its platform, edition and whether its tone suits what you want from Pywel.

Skyrim

Skyrim appears in the same kind of discussion because readers associate it with leaving the main quest and pursuing discoveries at their own pace. It remains a lead rather than a verified direct match in this article: the specific release, supported hardware and relationship to Crimson Desert’s traversal systems are not established here.

The Witcher

The Witcher is also named by readers looking for a broad fantasy setting. The series includes different games and world structures, so choose a specific title before comparing it with Pywel. Treat the suggestion as a starting point for exploration-focused research, not evidence that every entry offers the same freedom of movement.

A practical decision guide

Pick ELDEN RING when combat is the point of exploring

Choose ELDEN RING if your ideal loop is: spot something intriguing, investigate it, learn an enemy pattern, defeat a demanding boss or group, and use that experience to tackle a harder route. It is the best fit of the two featured alternatives for players who want discovery to carry real combat risk.

Pick Tears of the Kingdom when movement is the point of exploring

Choose Tears of the Kingdom if your ideal loop is: see a distant location, find a route across ground or sky, experiment with the environment, and keep moving because the journey itself is the reward. It is the better fit for traversal-led curiosity, provided you have Nintendo hardware.

Wait for Crimson Desert if the combination matters

If you specifically want one game combining Pywel’s wilderness, cities, ruins, quests, puzzles, activities and horseback, climbing and gliding systems, neither alternative should be presented as equivalent. Crimson Desert launched worldwide on March 19, 2026, and its official descriptions are the evidence for that particular combination. Choose another game when one component matters more than having all of them together.

Buying and platform checks

  • Confirm the platform first. Tears of the Kingdom requires Nintendo hardware; a Steam listing identifies the PC version of ELDEN RING. Do not infer console support from a game’s popularity.
  • Check the exact edition. Store listings can separate a base game, bundle, expansion or generation-specific release.
  • Verify region and availability. Physical stock, digital storefront pages and edition names can differ by country.
  • Do not treat a launch date as a performance guarantee. The March 19, 2026 date applies to the worldwide Crimson Desert launch announced by Pearl Abyss; it says nothing about frame rate, resolution or completion time.

Bottom line

ELDEN RING is the recommendation for players who want a large fantasy world where exploration repeatedly leads to difficult fights. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the recommendation for players who want to travel across land and sky and let curiosity determine the route. Crimson Desert remains the distinct choice for the specific Pywel mix of wilderness, cities, ruins, activities and climbing, gliding and horseback traversal.
