What makes CONTROL Resonant different
CONTROL Resonant is an action-adventure/action-RPG starring Dylan Faden. Remedy Entertainment places Dylan in a warped Manhattan threatened by paranatural annihilation, where reality itself is an obstacle to understand and survive. The game is scheduled for worldwide launch on 24 September 2026.
Its design combines several hooks that are useful when choosing a substitute:
#1 Best Overall
- Uncover the mysteries - Can you handle the bureau’s dark secrets? Unfold an epic supernatural struggle, filled with unexpected characters and bizarre events, as you search for your missing brother, and discover the truth that has brought you here.
- Everything is your weapon - Unleash destruction through transforming weaponry and telekinetic powers. Discover new ways to annihilate your enemies as you harness powerful abilities to turn everything around you into a lethal weapon.
- Explore a hidden world - Delve deep into the ominous expanses of a secretive government agency. Explore the Bureau’s shifting environments only to discover that there is always more than meets the eye…
- Fight for control - Battle a relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging boss fights to earn powerful upgrades that maximize abilities and customize your weaponry.
- Supernatural mystery: unexplained phenomena and a cosmic threat drive the story rather than serving as background decoration.
- Exploration with consequences: large, distinct zones contain side activities, hidden encounters and optional discoveries.
- Reality-breaking spaces: “Gravity Anomalies” can alter orientation and the rules of movement.
- Flexible objectives: branching missions, encounters and events can be tackled in any order.
- Build growth: Dylan’s powers and weaponry evolve as progression unlocks new ways to approach danger.
- A changing signature weapon: the Aberrant shifts between a heavy two-handed hammer and faster dual blades.
That combination is unusually specific. A game may match the paranormal investigation but not the open-zone structure; another may offer better exploration but little combat. The recommendations below identify the overlap and the trade-off for each.
CONTROL Resonant is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, and GeForce NOW. Remedy lists a Mac release through Steam and the App Store as following later in 2026. Physical Standard Editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are scheduled for 15 October 2026; Remedy lists a US price of $59.99, with regional pricing subject to change.
Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen described the project as “an expansive, reality-warping playground of choice, power, and consequence.” That phrase is a useful test for alternatives: the best matches let you investigate strange rules, make meaningful route or build decisions, and use unusual abilities rather than simply shoot through a linear haunted house.

Best games like CONTROL Resonant at a glance
| Game | Supernatural or reality-bending mystery | Exploration structure | Combat identity | Progression and choice | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Returnal | Alien phenomena, cyclical reality and an unsettling science-fiction mystery | Runs through changing hostile biomes; knowledge and route mastery accumulate | Fast third-person shooting, mobility and pattern learning | Temporary run builds with some permanent unlocks | More demanding and loop-based; less conversational investigation |
| Alan Wake 2 | Reality manipulation, occult fiction and layered investigation | Several explorable regions with optional evidence and environmental clues | Survival-horror firearms, evasion and resource management | Character-specific tools and case-solving progression | Slower, more horror-focused combat and less free-form traversal |
| Prey (2017) | Alien mimicry, unreliable perception and a station-wide conspiracy | Interconnected space station with backtracking, shortcuts and hidden rooms | Guns, tools, neuromods and alien abilities | Build choices can radically change access and tactics | More systemic immersive sim than cinematic paranormal adventure |
| Deathloop | Time-loop mystery, supernatural powers and a deliberately constructed island | Four districts revisited at different times to uncover routes and secrets | Gunplay, stealth, hacking and power combinations | Infuse gear and powers; knowledge is the most important upgrade | Mission structure repeats spaces instead of offering one continuous world |
| Outer Wilds | Cosmic archaeology and a mystery governed by physical rules | Compact solar system explored in any order; discoveries unlock understanding | Almost no conventional combat | Player knowledge is the progression | Excellent mystery, but not an action-RPG substitute |
| Dishonored 2 | Occult powers, supernatural factions and reality-altering locations | Large handcrafted missions with multiple routes and hidden objectives | Stealth, melee, gadgets and powers | Nonlinear approaches and ability choices shape each mission | Mission-based stealth sandbox rather than open-ended urban exploration |
Returnal: the closest match for supernatural action
Returnal is the clearest pick when your priority is an oppressive mystery expressed through movement, combat and environmental discovery. You play through a cycle in which an alien world changes between attempts. Each run reveals more about the setting and the protagonist’s situation, while your practical progress depends on learning enemy patterns, room layouts and risk management.
The overlap with Resonant is strongest in atmosphere and action. Both games make the environment feel like an active, unknowable force, and both ask you to interpret strange phenomena while moving through dangerous spaces. Returnal’s third-person shooting, dashes and airborne mobility provide a more intense combat rhythm than Resonant’s announced hammer-and-dual-blade identity.

- Uncover the mysteries. Can you handle the bureau's dark secrets? Unfold an epic supernatural struggle, filled with unexpected characters and bizarre events, as you search for your missing brother, and discover the truth that has brought you here
- everything is your weapon. Unleash destruction through transforming weaponry and telekinetic powers. Discover New ways to annihilate your enemies as you harness powerful abilities to turn everything around you into a lethal weapon
- explore a hidden world. Delve deep into the Ominous expanses of a secretive government Agency. Explore the bureau's shifting environments only to discover that there is always more than meets the eye
- fight for control. Battle a relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging boss fights to earn powerful upgrades that maximize abilities and customize your weaponry
- experience true next-generation gaming with increased visual fidelity through 4K graphics, ray-tracing and a 60FPS performance mode
What you gain
- A powerful science-fiction mystery with an unreliable, hostile world.
- Exploration that remains meaningful because every room can change the next decision.
- Combat built around movement, aiming and split-second adaptation.
What you give up
Returnal is organized around repeated runs, not a set of large city zones whose missions can be completed in any order. Many upgrades are temporary, so failure can erase a promising build. It is officially available on PS5 and PC. Pick it when demanding action and atmosphere matter more than leisurely investigation.
Alan Wake 2: choose this for detective work and reality distortion
Alan Wake 2 treats supernatural mystery as a case to assemble. Its horror comes from the collision of an authored story, occult imagery and places that appear to obey the logic of fiction rather than ordinary geography. You alternate between investigations that reward close observation: documents, conversations, scenes and environmental details gradually explain what is happening.
Like Resonant, it uses architecture and altered reality to create questions that cannot be answered by a map marker alone. Optional evidence and side spaces make curiosity worthwhile, but the pace is more deliberate. Combat is survival horror: ammunition and healing are limited, enemies are dangerous, and avoiding a fight can be as sensible as winning one.
Best for
- Players who want story clues, case boards and unsettling set pieces.
- Readers of supernatural fiction who enjoy stories about stories and unstable realities.
- Anyone who prefers a guided investigation with optional detours to a highly systemic sandbox.
The trade-off is power fantasy. Alan Wake 2 does not center on telekinetic-style traversal or a transforming melee weapon, and its combat is less constant than an action-RPG. Choose it when the mystery itself is your main progression system.
Prey (2017): the deepest environmental mystery
Prey places you on Talos I, an abandoned space station whose inhabitants and systems conceal a conspiracy. The station is a connected puzzle box: offices, laboratories, maintenance areas and habitation modules link together, while locked doors and damaged systems invite you to find alternate solutions.
Rank #3
- Control Ultimate Edition contains the main game and all previously released expansions ("The Foundation" and "Awe") in one great value package
- Can you handle The Bureau's dark secrets? Unfold an epic supernatural struggle, filled with unexpected characters and bizarre events, as you search for your missing brother, and discover the truth that has brought you here
- Unleash destruction through transforming weaponry and telekinetic powers. Discover new ways to annihilate your enemies as you harness powerful abilities to turn everything around you into a lethal weapon
- Delve deep into the ominous expanses of a secretive government agency. Explore The Bureau's shifting environments only to discover that there is always more than meets the eye
- Battle a relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging boss fights to earn powerful upgrades that maximize abilities and customize your weaponry
Its mimic-based alien threat creates a strong parallel with Resonant’s reality-bending premise. Ordinary objects may be dangerous, trustworthy information is scarce, and reading emails or examining a room can be as important as winning a firefight. You can rely on conventional weapons and tools, or invest in alien abilities that change how you move and solve problems.
Why it suits explorers
- Backtracking is productive because new abilities, keycards and information open earlier areas.
- Multiple solutions support stealth, hacking, engineering and direct combat.
- The environment communicates history through layout, props, audio and written records.
Prey is less theatrical than Resonant and more interested in systems that react to your choices. It does not offer a warped Manhattan or missions explicitly playable in any order; instead, it gives you a station where your route and build determine what becomes possible. Choose it for experimentation and environmental storytelling.
Deathloop: supernatural abilities in a learnable loop
Deathloop turns exploration into investigation by repeating four districts across four times of day. The island’s residents, security systems and opportunities change with the schedule. Your objective is not merely to survive one visit but to learn enough to arrange events into a successful sequence.
The supernatural connection comes through powers, unusual weapons and the mystery of the loop itself. You can scout rooftops, hack devices, discover hidden passages and combine abilities to reach targets in ways that reward planning. The more you understand the island, the more powerful your decisions become.
The important difference
Deathloop’s world is deliberately compact and repetitive. Revisiting a district is the point, whereas Resonant promises large zones filled with optional discoveries and branching events. Deathloop also emphasizes stealth and target planning over sustained melee. Choose it if the pleasure of decoding a world and refining a route is stronger than the desire for a continuous open map.

- Discover the secrets - Can you handle the dark secrets of the office? Develop an epic supernatural bat, full of unexpected characters and quirky events as you are looking for a missing brother and discover the truth that brought you here

- Fight for control: - Fight the relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging bosses fighting to get powerful improvements that maximize skills and adapt weapons
Outer Wilds: exploration where knowledge is the upgrade
Outer Wilds is the recommendation for players who want the purest form of curiosity-driven discovery. You explore a small solar system, follow clues left by an extinct civilization and learn how planets, ruins and time-dependent events fit together. The game does not gate progress behind conventional levels; understanding is the key that opens new destinations and solutions.
Its mystery is cosmic rather than occult, but the feeling of encountering impossible rules is close to Resonant’s Gravity Anomalies. You may discover a location only when a planet’s surface shifts, a structure becomes accessible or a clue changes what you know about another world.
There is almost no traditional combat, no equipment grind and no character-stat build. That is both its strength and its limitation. Pick Outer Wilds when environmental questions, spatial reasoning and wonder are more important than weapons or action.
Dishonored 2: supernatural powers and authored exploration
Dishonored 2 offers handcrafted missions that behave like miniature exploratory sandboxes. You can infiltrate, fight, distract, possess, rewire security and search for optional objectives. Supernatural abilities give movement and combat a distinctly unnatural feel, while the world communicates political and occult history through architecture and overheard conversations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIts missions support many routes and outcomes, making it a strong match for Resonant’s emphasis on choice. The difference is scope: each level is a designed problem rather than part of one continuously evolving city. Stealth is also a central pillar, so players who want constant action may prefer Returnal or Prey.

If you specifically want a Resonant-like open-zone action RPG
No listed alternative reproduces every announced feature. Resonant combines large Manhattan zones, optional encounters, branching events, evolving powers and the Aberrant’s hammer-to-dual-blades transformation. Start with Returnal for action and atmosphere, or Prey for exploration and systemic choices, then move to Alan Wake 2 if the investigation is what you valued most.
What to know before buying CONTROL Resonant
The game is planned for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, with GeForce NOW support listed. A Mac version through Steam and the App Store is listed for later in 2026, so Mac availability should be checked for the date you intend to play. Remedy’s physical Standard Editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are scheduled for 15 October 2026, after the 24 September worldwide launch; the listed US price is $59.99 and may differ by region.
Those details matter when selecting an alternative. If you need something playable now on your hardware, verify the edition and platform before purchasing. If you are specifically waiting for Dylan Faden’s story, no substitute offers the same setting or Aberrant weapon system; the games above are ways to target individual parts of the experience while you wait or decide.
