If you enjoy Sid Meier’s Civilization VI but want a different way to build an empire, start with HUMANKIND for changing historical identities, Millennia for a long historical timeline, or Age of Wonders 4 for fantasy 4X strategy with turn-based tactical combat. Civilization VII is the obvious franchise continuation, but its age-based structure means it is not simply Civ VI with new content.

The choices below are organized by the experience each game advertises. Official descriptions do not provide a measured head-to-head ranking for difficulty, artificial intelligence, performance, campaign length, price or overall quality, so treat this as a fit guide rather than a “best game” leaderboard.

At a glance: which Civilization alternative fits you?

If you want… Start with… Why it fits
A historical setting with an identity that can change over time HUMANKIND Its official site describes building a civilization by combining 60 historical cultures from the Ancient to Modern Age.
Historical nation-building across an exceptionally long span Millennia Paradox describes a 10,000-year journey from humanity’s dawn to the near future, with development shaped through ages.
Fantasy empire-building and a stronger tactical-combat component Age of Wonders 4 Paradox presents it as a blend of 4X strategy and turn-based tactical combat in magical realms.
The newest way to remain inside the Civilization series Civilization VII The official site lists a February 11, 2025 launch and support material describes age-specific content and carry-over between ages.

These distinctions come from the publishers’ descriptions, not comparative playtesting. Platform availability, editions and store listings can change, so check the current listing for your system before buying.

What Civilization VI establishes as the baseline

A useful alternative depends on what you actually value in Civ VI. The official Civilization site frames the series as turn-based strategy in which you guide a civilization through history while building an empire. The Civilization VI page highlights several systems that define that experience: cities expand across local terrain, culture is researched alongside technology, and leaders pursue agendas tied to historical traits. Those features create three practical comparison questions.

#1 Best Overall
Age of Wonders 4 Standard - PC [Online Game Code]
  • Craft your followers by combining bodily forms, societal traits and arcane powers. Build anything from a clan of cannibal halflings to mystic moon elves, or recreate your favorite fantasy tropes
  • Every choice opens up new possibilities and tactical advantages; deep, multilayered strategy allows you to try new tactics or explore new powers at every turn
  • Explore a new realm with each game - or create your own! Challenge new variations and combinations of locations and features, from frozen wastelands ruled by ice queens to desolated ruins where dragons roam
  • What kind of world do you want? Civ VI uses a historical setting. An alternative may stay historical, stretch history across a different timeline, or move into fantasy.
  • How is civilization identity handled? In Civ VI, a named civilization and leader provide a persistent identity. Another game may let you change that identity as the campaign progresses.
  • Where does combat happen? Civ VI makes military action part of the empire map. A different design may put more emphasis on dedicated, turn-based tactical battles.

Use those questions instead of assuming that every turn-based 4X game will feel interchangeable. A game can share the broad “build an empire over turns” premise while changing the setting, the way a nation develops, or the role of combat.

HUMANKIND: change your historical culture as the ages advance

What the official description promises

The official HUMANKIND website says you create a civilization by combining 60 historical cultures spanning the Ancient to Modern Age. Each culture adds its own gameplay layer. The 60 figure is the game’s advertised culture count, not an independently verified study or a guarantee that every possible combination is equally effective.

Why it is a natural Civ VI alternative

HUMANKIND is the clearest choice if the part of Civ VI you enjoy most is watching a society develop through history but you want its identity to be more flexible. Rather than treating the starting civilization as the only defining choice, the advertised design lets you combine cultures as you move through successive ages. That directly addresses the question, “What if my civilization’s identity could evolve instead of remaining tied to one initial label?”

This makes it especially relevant for players who like planning around changing historical eras. You can approach the game expecting the central decision to involve which culture layer best represents the direction you want at a given point in the timeline. The official description supports that changing-identity premise; it does not establish how deep the resulting systems are, how balanced all combinations are, or whether the learning curve is gentler or steeper than Civ VI.

What to consider before choosing it

  • Choose it for identity experimentation. The defining advertised distinction is the ability to combine historical cultures across ages.
  • Do not assume a one-to-one Civ VI interface or ruleset. Shared historical 4X themes do not mean that city growth, research, diplomacy or victory paths operate identically.
  • Keep expectations evidence-based. The official page does not provide a comparative assessment of artificial intelligence, campaign length, performance, difficulty or value against Civ VI.

Best fit in one sentence

Pick HUMANKIND when you want historical empire-building but are most interested in changing the cultural identity of your civilization as the ages progress.

Millennia: a historical 4X journey across 10,000 years

What the publisher describes

Paradox presents Millennia as a historical 4X strategy game that navigates 10,000 years, from humanity’s dawn to the near future. Players shape development through ages or adapt to a future chosen by rivals. The 10,000-year figure is the publisher’s description of the game’s historical span, not a measured statistic about campaign duration or real-world play time.

Why the timeline matters

Millennia is aimed at the Civ VI player who wants the sweep of history to be the central organizing idea. Its advertised scope begins before the familiar eras of conventional nation-building and continues toward a near-future endpoint. That gives the game a distinct pitch from a standard campaign that simply moves through a familiar sequence of historical periods: the emphasis is on navigating a very long arc and responding when rivals influence the future direction.

The age system also creates a different planning question from “Which technology should I research next?” You are considering how your development path fits the current age and what happens when the world moves toward a future shaped by other powers. The source supports that age-based development and rival-influenced future; it does not state that the game offers more strategic depth, better artificial intelligence or a longer campaign than Civ VI.

Who should choose Millennia?

  • History-first players: You want the setting and progression of a civilization to remain grounded in a long historical timeline.
  • Age-system enthusiasts: You like the idea that development is organized around ages and that the future can reflect choices made by rivals.
  • Players seeking a different historical framework: You want another interpretation of 4X nation-building rather than a fantasy setting or a direct sequel.

What it does not answer by itself

The official page does not establish how its economies, diplomacy, combat, victory conditions or user interface compare with Civ VI. Those are important practical questions, but they should not be filled in with assumptions simply because both games are described as historical 4X strategy. Choose Millennia for its stated timeline and age-based premise, then verify the current platform and edition details for the version you intend to play.

Age of Wonders 4: fantasy 4X with turn-based tactical combat

The core difference from Civ VI

Paradox describes Age of Wonders 4 as a combination of 4X strategy and turn-based tactical combat set in magical realms. That gives it the most obvious genre and setting change among these recommendations: you leave historical nation-building for fantasy empire management, and combat is explicitly presented as a tactical layer rather than only an element of the strategic empire map.

Age of Wonders 4 Premium - PC [Online Game Code]
  • Craft your followers by combining bodily forms, societal traits and arcane powers. Build anything from a clan of cannibal halflings to mystic moon elves, or recreate your favorite fantasy tropes
  • Every choice opens up new possibilities and tactical advantages; deep, multilayered strategy allows you to try new tactics or explore new powers at every turn
  • Explore a new realm with each game - or create your own! Challenge new variations and combinations of locations and features, from frozen wastelands ruled by ice queens to desolated ruins where dragons roam

Why a Civ VI player might prefer it

If your favorite turns in Civ VI are military confrontations but you want those encounters framed as dedicated tactical decisions, Age of Wonders 4 is the most relevant option in this list. Its official description supports a two-part structure: a 4X layer for managing a realm and a turn-based tactical-combat layer for battles. The magical setting also removes the expectation that every faction, unit or conflict must follow real-world history.

This is not a recommendation that it has deeper combat, smarter opponents or a higher-quality campaign than Civ VI; the official description does not make those comparisons. The reason to choose it is narrower and clearer: you want fantasy world-building and a stated tactical-combat emphasis within a 4X format.

Questions to ask before switching

  • Are you comfortable leaving history behind? Age of Wonders 4 is set in magical realms, so it is not a historical substitute.
  • Do you want combat to occupy more of your attention? Tactical combat is an explicit part of the game’s description, unlike a recommendation based solely on a shared empire-building label.
  • Are you looking for identical systems? The source establishes the genre blend, not matching rules for cities, culture, research or leader agendas.

Best fit in one sentence

Choose Age of Wonders 4 when you want the broad planning of a 4X game but prefer a fantasy setting and turn-based tactical battles.

Civilization VII: sequel context, not a simple Civ VI replacement

Release and platform context

The official Civilization site says Civilization VII launched on February 11, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac and Linux. Store availability and edition details can change, so confirm the current listing for your platform before purchase.

How its structure differs

According to the Civilization Support explanation of changes from Civilization VI, some gameplay elements are exclusive to a particular Age, while some elements carry over based on the previous civilization and the player’s successes. That age-based structure is why Civilization VII should be treated as sequel context rather than an interchangeable recommendation for someone seeking “another Civ VI.”

If you want to remain within the Civilization series, VII is the logical current option. If you want the familiar Civ VI structure with a different interpretation, however, HUMANKIND, Millennia or Age of Wonders 4 may better match the specific change you are seeking. The choice depends on whether you want continuity with the series or a distinct model of civilization progression.

When VII is the right direction

  • Stay with the series: You want a new official Civilization entry rather than a different developer’s interpretation of 4X strategy.
  • Explore age-based carry-over: You are interested in a system where some elements are tied to a particular Age and others persist according to prior choices and successes.
  • Keep your platform options open: The official launch information covers consoles, PC, Mac and Linux, but current edition listings still need to be checked.

A practical decision guide

Step 1: Decide whether history is essential

If you want to remain in a historical setting, narrow the list to HUMANKIND and Millennia. Choose HUMANKIND when changing cultural identity is the attraction; choose Millennia when the appeal is a 10,000-year historical arc and age-based development.

Step 2: Decide whether fantasy is welcome

If you are happy to leave real-world history behind, Age of Wonders 4 offers the clearest change of atmosphere. Its official description combines magical realms with 4X strategy and turn-based tactical combat.

Step 3: Decide whether you want continuity

If the Civilization name, series framework and a new official entry matter more than experimenting with another design, investigate Civilization VII. Remember that its age-specific and carry-over systems distinguish it from Civ VI.

Step 4: Verify the practical details

  1. Check that the game is listed for your exact platform: console model, Windows PC, Mac or Linux where applicable.
  2. Confirm the edition and included content on the current store page.
  3. Review the developer or publisher’s current system requirements for PC versions.
  4. Check the region and currency of the listing before assuming a price or availability.
  5. Read the current support information if a feature, platform or edition is decisive for your purchase.

How to set expectations when comparing these games

All four choices can be discussed alongside Civ VI, but they are not interchangeable products. HUMANKIND changes how historical identity is represented. Millennia emphasizes an unusually broad historical span and age-based development. Age of Wonders 4 changes both the setting and the role of combat. Civilization VII keeps the series identity while introducing age-specific and carry-over structures.

None of the cited official pages establishes a controlled comparison of artificial intelligence, difficulty, performance, campaign length, accessibility, player reception or value. Avoid treating the table as a quality ranking. It is a map from a reader’s preferred experience to the game whose official description most directly addresses that preference.

Final choice

For the closest historical change of pace, start with HUMANKIND if evolving cultural identity sounds more appealing than keeping one fixed civilization. Pick Millennia if your priority is a sweeping historical timeline from humanity’s dawn to the near future. Choose Age of Wonders 4 if fantasy and turn-based tactical combat are the reasons you want something beyond Civ VI. Select Civilization VII when you want to stay with the series and are ready for its age-based structure rather than expecting a direct Civ VI duplicate.
