Games Like Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse for Classic Metroidvania Combat

If you want fast 2D combat, demanding bosses and exploration built around movement abilities, start with Dead Cells, Hollow Knight or Metroid Dread. Dead Cells is the closest match for rapid, reactive action; Hollow Knight is the best fit for precise melee spacing and dodging; and Metroid Dread most closely matches readable enemy attacks, parries and mobility-focused progression.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a new 2D action-exploration game rather than a retro reissue. It launched on October 15, 2026, and combines a freely swinging combat-and-traversal whip with seven weapon categories, relics, Arcana abilities, secrets, backtracking, precision platforming and difficult bosses. The alternatives below match different parts of that formula, so the right choice depends on whether you value a fixed interconnected world, build variety, defensive timing or repeated runs.

What makes Belmont’s Curse distinctive?

Konami places Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. You play Rose Belmont on a monster-hunting journey through a 2D world. The game is built around an action-exploration loop: fight through hostile areas, learn routes, uncover secrets, return to previously inaccessible passages and prepare for hard boss encounters.

The whip is the defining tool. Konami describes it as a way to move freely “like a trapeze artist,” while Xbox Wire explains that it also works as a grappling hook for combat and platforming. That makes traversal part of the fighting system rather than a separate movement mode. You can reposition quickly, reach ledges and attack from changing angles, while enemy attacks are telegraphed clearly enough to support deliberate reactions.

Rose also has a parry. Successful defensive timing adds another layer beyond simply standing at the correct distance and striking. Bosses become Arcana cards that provide spells or special actions, and seven weapon categories plus relics let you shape a preferred loadout. The result is still recognizably classic Castlevania combat, but with more mobility and customization than a single fixed weapon moveset.

TechRadar characterizes the game as classic Castlevania-style play with precision platforming, secrets, backtracking and difficult bosses. Those traits matter when choosing an alternative: a game can resemble Belmont’s Curse in attack speed while feeling completely different if its map is randomized, its progression is mostly linear or its defense system is less timing-focused.

Three best games to play after Belmont’s Curse

Game Strongest match Main difference Choose it if you want
Dead Cells Fast, responsive action and Castlevania lineage Procedurally rearranged, run-based stages Constant movement, flexible builds and replayable attempts
Hollow Knight Precise melee spacing, dodging and exploration A focused nail-based combat system instead of a whip, weapon classes and Arcana loadouts A large interconnected world where timing and positioning dominate
Metroid Dread Readable attacks, parries and movement-driven progression A science-fiction setting and a different weapon and upgrade structure Defensive timing and mobility challenges in a more guided campaign

Dead Cells: the closest fast-action comparison

Dead Cells is the strongest recommendation when your priority is speed and immediate responsiveness. Xbox Wire identifies Evil Empire as the studio that spun off to manage Dead Cells updates and downloadable content, and describes the game as a randomized, run-based twist on the Castlevania formula. That connection makes it the clearest action-lineage comparison in this group.

What carries over from Belmont’s Curse

  • Combat rewards quick reactions, movement and rapid decisions rather than slow, heavyweight swings.
  • You can adapt your equipment and abilities to different encounters, echoing Belmont’s Curse’s emphasis on weapon categories, relics and special powers.
  • Enemy patterns and boss situations encourage learning through repeated attempts.

What changes

Dead Cells does not give you one permanent, fixed map to master. Each run rearranges its stages, and death sends you back to begin another attempt. That structure changes the emotional rhythm of exploration: instead of planning a long backtracking route through one world, you make the best build you can from the current run and decide how aggressively to push forward.

Castlevania Dominus Collection (Limited Run #116) Order of Ecclesia Cover Art – PlayStation 5
  • Castlevania Dominus Collection is on a region-free physical disc for the PlayStation 5.
  • Genre: Arcade, Platformer, Role-playing
  • # of Players: 1 Player
  • Supported Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish
  • Three incredible action adventure games from the Castlevania series have finally returned, for the first time!

This is the right choice if you enjoy the moment-to-moment feel of Belmont’s Curse more than its specific map design. It is a weaker fit if your favorite part is remembering a permanent layout, opening a newly reachable shortcut and returning to an earlier room with a newly acquired movement option. The games meet on speed and build experimentation, but they diverge sharply on world structure.

Hollow Knight: the precision-melee benchmark

Hollow Knight is the best recommendation for players who want combat built around spacing, reaction timing and careful dodges. PC Gamer uses the game’s fast nail swipes and precise evasive movement as a benchmark for the metroidvania genre. That makes it a combat-feel comparison rather than a claim that it shares Belmont’s Curse’s exact equipment or traversal mechanics.

Why the combat feels similar

Both games reward learning an enemy’s reach and attack rhythm. You are expected to stay close enough to punish an opening without drifting into a telegraphed strike. Small positioning errors matter, especially during boss fights, and success comes from recognizing patterns rather than relying only on high damage.

Why the systems are different

Hollow Knight centers its melee system on the nail and a tightly integrated set of movement and ability upgrades. It does not reproduce Rose’s whip-as-grappling-hook behavior, seven weapon categories or Arcana cards. Choose it when you want a cohesive, precision-focused moveset and a world designed for exploration and discovery. Choose Dead Cells instead if changing your equipment from run to run is more important than mastering one core weapon.

Its exploration also asks you to pay attention to environmental clues and route connections. The appeal is the deliberate process of learning how locations fit together and deciding which unexplored path is worth revisiting, making it a strong option for readers who value the metroidvania side of Belmont’s Curse as much as its combat.

Metroid Dread: parries and mobility under pressure

Metroid Dread is the best match for readers who are drawn to Belmont’s Curse’s parry and movement emphasis. Xbox Wire names it as a peer for the newer Castlevania game’s parry-driven combat. The comparison is strongest in encounter rhythm: enemies telegraph attacks, you read the signal, respond with a defensive action or movement and then exploit the opening.

Where it matches

  • Defensive timing: the parry is a meaningful part of the fight rather than an optional trick.
  • Mobility progression: new movement capabilities change which routes you can take and how you approach danger.
  • Readable encounters: success depends on recognizing visual cues and acting within a narrow timing window.

Where it differs

Metroid Dread uses a science-fiction setting and a different weapon and upgrade structure. It does not offer Belmont’s Curse’s whip-based traversal, seven weapon categories or Arcana-card abilities. Its world and progression are also more guided in places, so it is a better fit for players who want movement challenges and defensive combat without the same emphasis on loadout experimentation.

How the three alternatives compare with Belmont’s Curse

Use these distinctions to avoid choosing a game solely because it carries the “metroidvania” label.

Combat feel

Dead Cells is the closest on speed and constant responsiveness. Hollow Knight is the closest on deliberate spacing and precise dodges. Metroid Dread is the closest on defensive timing and attacks that clearly signal when to parry or evade. Belmont’s Curse combines all three qualities with a whip that lets you alter distance and attack angle quickly.

Traversal and backtracking

Belmont’s Curse uses a fixed interconnected world with secrets and routes that reward returning after gaining new capabilities. Hollow Knight offers the closest equivalent sense of learning a permanent map. Metroid Dread also ties movement upgrades to progression, but its route guidance is more pronounced. Dead Cells intentionally breaks from this model with randomized stages and repeated runs.

Build variety

Belmont’s Curse gives you seven weapon categories, relics and Arcana abilities. Dead Cells provides the broadest run-to-run experimentation of the three alternatives. Hollow Knight keeps the core attack system more focused, while Metroid Dread emphasizes weapon and movement upgrades within a defined campaign rather than a highly variable build.

Challenge and failure

All four games expect you to learn from mistakes, but the cost of failure differs. Belmont’s Curse and the two fixed-world alternatives emphasize mastering specific rooms and bosses. Dead Cells asks you to improve across repeated attempts while adapting to a new layout each time. If you dislike losing a run’s progress, Hollow Knight or Metroid Dread may feel more predictable; if you enjoy the tension of making one more attempt with a new build, Dead Cells is the natural choice.

Which game should you choose?

  1. Pick Dead Cells if fast attacks, rapid movement and changing equipment matter most, and you are comfortable with randomized, run-based progression.
  2. Pick Hollow Knight if you want the purest precision-melee experience, careful dodging and a permanent world whose secrets reward patient exploration.
  3. Pick Metroid Dread if parries, readable enemy cues and movement-based upgrades are your priority, even if you prefer a science-fiction setting.
  4. Stay with Belmont’s Curse if the specific combination of whip grappling, classic Castlevania-style combat, seven weapon categories, relics and Arcana abilities is what you want.

Platforms, release details and file size

Konami lists Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. The release date is October 15, 2026, so platform storefronts and patches may still change shortly after launch.

Nintendo’s listing for the digital Switch edition gives a 3.5 GB download size. That figure applies to the digital Switch version documented by Nintendo; it should not be treated as the install size for the other platforms or for a future physical edition.

Checking the price and edition

TechRadar’s price-comparison section showed an Amazon listing at $29.99, but retailer stock, format and regional availability can change. Treat that amount as a listing observed in the comparison, not a guaranteed current price. Before buying, confirm the platform, whether the listing is digital or physical and whether your region is supported.

Early technical issues to watch for

TechRadar reported occasional audio, visual and gameplay glitches in its review build. That does not establish that every player will encounter them, but it is a reason to check the current patch notes and user reports for your platform before purchasing or starting a long playthrough.

  • Install the latest update before judging performance or bug frequency.
  • If a sound, visual or progression problem appears, record the platform, game version and exact room or encounter.
  • Restart the game and reload an earlier save only after confirming that the issue is not a known temporary display or audio fault.
  • Check the publisher’s support information for platform-specific fixes before deleting save data.

Because the game released on October 15, 2026, launch-period fixes may arrive quickly. A review-build observation should therefore be read as a caution to verify the current version, not as a permanent description of the finished product.

The practical takeaway

For the closest fast-action follow-up, choose Dead Cells, accepting its run-based randomized structure. For the strongest precision-melee and exploration alternative, choose Hollow Knight. For parries, readable attacks and mobility-focused progression, choose Metroid Dread. None reproduces every part of Belmont’s Curse: its unusual identity comes from combining a freely moving combat whip, grappling traversal, seven weapon categories, relics and Arcana powers inside a fixed world built around secrets, backtracking, precision platforming and hard bosses.
