Games Like Annihilated: Dark Dungeon Crawlers to Play Next

If you want something to play before Annihilated arrives, start with Darkest Dungeon for the closest overall match, Slay the Spire for the deepest deckbuilding, or Inscryption for psychological horror and narrative surprises. Each captures a different part of Annihilated’s design rather than reproducing the whole combination.

Annihilated is still upcoming. Its current Steam listing plans a November 10, 2026 release after the date moved from July 22, 2026 to a Q4 2026 window. That makes these three released games useful ways to explore its likely influences while you wait.

What Annihilated is promising

Annihilated is presented as a story-driven roguelite RPG set deep inside a cursed dungeon. The player follows the last survivor of a rescue party searching for a missing hero’s group. Its listed systems combine turn-based combat, deckbuilding, dungeon crawling, party-based RPG play and visual-novel-style storytelling.

The unusual part is the mix of systems. A run is not only about choosing attacks and upgrades: the game is also built around decisions, consequences and multiple endings. The tone is dark fantasy with psychological horror, so the story is intended to make the dungeon feel threatening even when no fight is occurring.

“Annihilated is a story-driven roguelite RPG about a journey through the depths with a broken hero — and what they have to answer for.”

Flashlight Games, official Steam description

No released game below duplicates every one of those elements. The practical approach is to choose the substitute based on the part of Annihilated that matters most to you: stressful party survival, card-build experimentation, or unsettling narrative design.

Darkest Dungeon: the closest overall fit

Why it resembles Annihilated

Darkest Dungeon is the strongest choice if what you want is a dangerous expedition with a group of vulnerable characters. Its campaign sends you into procedural dungeons where every decision consumes limited resources and every battle can leave a lasting mark. That combination of party management, bleak setting and repeated high-risk runs is closer to Annihilated’s dark-crawler premise than a pure card game is.

The official description centers on stress, disease, famine and darkness. These are not decorative status effects: they shape whether an expedition can continue. A party that wins fights but runs out of food, accumulates too much stress or suffers untreated illness may be unable to finish the route safely. The game also includes permadeath, so a favorite hero can be lost permanently rather than simply restored after a defeat.

How its combat and campaign differ

Combat is turn-based, but your main construction task is assembling a balanced party and choosing each hero’s available skills. You are not drafting a deck during every run in the way you do in Slay the Spire. Instead, you prepare a roster, decide who occupies each position, and adapt the formation to the dungeon and enemies ahead.

The procedural structure makes expeditions unpredictable, while the campaign layer gives losses a sense of history. A successful run can improve your resources and facilities; a disastrous one can force you to replace a dead hero or retire a damaged team. The listed roster contains 16 playable classes, giving you many combinations to learn.

Choose it if

  • You want the most punishing party-based dungeon experience in this group.
  • You enjoy managing stress, health, supplies and long-term consequences.
  • You prefer gothic dread and attrition to puzzle-box storytelling.
  • Permadeath makes victories feel meaningful rather than frustrating.

Choose another game if your priority is building a card engine or following visual-novel-style choices. Darkest Dungeon delivers narrative atmosphere through its world and campaign pressure, not through branching dialogue endings in the way Annihilated is described.

Slay the Spire: the best deckbuilding substitute

Why its runs are ideal for card-build fans

Slay the Spire is the clearest recommendation when the word “deckbuilding” is the main reason Annihilated interests you. Each attempt generates a route through a procedural map, and the fights, cards, relics and bosses you encounter change from run to run. You make a series of small choices—what card to add, which reward to skip, which path to take—that determine whether the final deck is coherent or overloaded.

The listed content includes four playable characters, more than 350 cards and more than 200 items. Those figures describe the breadth available in the game rather than a promise that every run will expose the same options. The depth comes from interactions: a card that is weak in isolation can become central when paired with the right relics, defensive plan or energy economy.

What it does not replicate

This is not a dark party crawler. You normally develop one character at a time, and the map is a strategic route rather than a room-by-room dungeon inhabited by a managed squad. Horror is also not the focus. The tension comes from probability, resource management and the risk of throwing away a strong run with one poor fight or greedy upgrade.

  • [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

That difference is useful. If Annihilated’s combat turns out to reward careful deck construction, Slay the Spire teaches the relevant habits: evaluate a card in the context of your existing plan, preserve flexibility early, and stop adding cards when they reduce consistency. It also provides nearly unlimited practice because a failed run immediately suggests another route or build to test.

Choose it if

  • You want repeatable turn-based runs with substantial build experimentation.
  • You enjoy analyzing card, relic and route synergies more than managing dialogue.
  • You prefer a clean rules system where improvement comes from understanding probabilities and interactions.
  • You want low-horror gameplay that can still produce considerable tension.

Inscryption: the strongest psychological-horror alternative

Why its tone is the closest

Inscryption is the pick for readers who are drawn to Annihilated’s psychological-horror promise rather than its conventional RPG structure. It presents itself as an “inky black card-based odyssey,” combining deckbuilding roguelike play with escape-room-style puzzles and a deliberately unsettling narrative.

The card table is part of the horror rather than a neutral combat interface. Rules, opponents and the meaning of the game change as you discover more. That makes the experience less about optimizing a known system and more about asking what the system is hiding. Surprises work best when you avoid spoilers, so descriptions of its later turns should remain general.

How it compares mechanically

Like Annihilated, it places card battles inside a story with secrets and consequences. Unlike a traditional party RPG, it does not focus on recruiting and rotating a team of heroes through a long campaign. Exploration is tied to puzzles and a shifting structure, so progress depends on curiosity as much as tactical calculation.

Its deckbuilding is intentionally experimental. You learn by testing combinations, accepting strange bargains and noticing that an apparent disadvantage may be useful later. The result is less predictable than a conventional roguelite and more narrative-driven than Slay the Spire.

  • You prefer discovery and surprise to a fully transparent ruleset.
  • You want a card battler with a strong authorial voice rather than a pure strategy sandbox.

If your priority is a persistent party, procedural dungeon attrition or many traditional RPG classes, Darkest Dungeon is the better match.

Pick the right game by the feature you care about

If choices and endings matter most

Start with Inscryption. It is the closest of the released options to the idea that the narrative is part of the system and that discoveries can change how you understand the game. It is not evidence that Annihilated will use the same structure, but it offers the most direct preparation for a card game where story context matters.

If party survival matters most

Play Darkest Dungeon. Its stress, disease, food and darkness systems make every expedition a question of whether the team can endure the next section. The pressure is persistent and character-focused, which suits readers who want a dungeon crawl to feel like an ordeal.

If card synergies matter most

Choose Slay the Spire. Its large card and item pool, branching map and changing bosses create the most concentrated lesson in deck construction. You can focus on learning when to add, remove or ignore a card without also learning a party-management layer.

If you want the bleakest atmosphere

Pick Darkest Dungeon for gothic despair and the consequences of attrition. Pick Inscryption for intimate, psychological unease and surreal narrative turns. The former makes the world feel hostile through sustained campaign pressure; the latter makes the rules and setting feel unreliable.

If you need the most replayable practice

Slay the Spire offers the cleanest repeat loop: select a character, map a route, assemble a deck, fight through escalating encounters and try a different plan after defeat. Darkest Dungeon also supports repeated expeditions, but its campaign losses can be more costly because heroes and resources persist between runs.

A practical play order while waiting

  1. Begin with Slay the Spire if deckbuilding is new to you. Learn the fundamentals of card evaluation, route planning and adapting a build to the rewards you actually receive.
  2. Move to Darkest Dungeon when you want the dungeon and party layer. Its stress, supply and permadeath systems show how a run can remain tense even when combat rules are straightforward.
  3. Finish with Inscryption for the narrative-horror angle. Approach it with as little prior plot information as possible so its puzzles and shifts in perspective retain their impact.

You can reverse that order if atmosphere is your first concern: start with Inscryption, then use Darkest Dungeon for sustained gothic pressure, and end with Slay the Spire when you want a highly replayable systems-focused game.

What to expect from Annihilated’s release status

The current Steam listing makes November 10, 2026 the planned date, but the project has already moved from July 22, 2026 to a Q4 2026 window. Treat the date as an announced target rather than a guarantee. Store pages can also change their dates, availability and regional details, so check the listing again when you are ready to buy.

Because Annihilated has not released, its final balance, deck size, party rules, difficulty model and exact branching structure are not established here. The tags and description support the broad comparison—turn-based combat, deckbuilding, roguelite runs, dungeon exploration, psychological horror and consequential choices—but they do not prove that it will play like any one of the three recommendations.

The safest expectation is a hybrid. Darkest Dungeon demonstrates the stress of a dangerous party expedition, Slay the Spire demonstrates how deep a run-based card system can become, and Inscryption demonstrates how card rules can carry psychological horror and narrative surprise. Choose the one that matches the feature you want to experience now rather than waiting for a perfect one-to-one replacement.
