Games Like a Magical Boy-and-Elephant Adventure: The Best Family-Friendly Alternatives

The closest family-friendly substitute for Hanno: A Magical Tale is The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on Switch. It has the same broad appeal of a colorful world that opens up as a child learns its puzzles. For a younger player who needs simpler systems, choose Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee!. Dragon Quest Treasures and Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time are better when low-pressure exploration and creativity matter more than a tightly directed story.

Hanno: A Magical Tale is not playable yet. One Way Eleven’s 16 October 2026 press release describes a planned PC release in 2027, while Steam lists the date as “To be announced.” These alternatives let children play a gentle adventure now while preserving the qualities that make Hanno distinctive: a young hero, a magical animal companion, exploration, puzzles, and a story built around cooperation.

What makes Hanno: A Magical Tale different?

A partnership rather than a cosmetic pet

In the announced game, orphaned boy Vimal finds a wounded baby elephant named Hanno. Their relationship is the central game system, not merely a story detail. Creative Director Pedro Campos describes the design this way: “In our game, the magic belongs to the elephant and it only works while the boy carries him. We wanted a companion you can’t do without and who can’t do without you.”

That idea gives the game a clear emotional and mechanical identity. Vimal and Hanno need one another, and the player is expected to solve problems through their bond. The official description presents Hanno as a companion whose magical abilities matter to progression, with some sections allowing the player to control the elephant directly.

Exploration, puzzles, combat and a storybook setting

Steam describes a story-driven action-adventure in the fictional world of Ashar, a setting inspired by South and Southeast Asia. The announced feature set combines exploration, light puzzles, combat and magic. That combination places Hanno between a traditional family adventure and a light action role-playing game: the world should reward curiosity, but the game is not presented as a punishing combat challenge.

When can children play it?

The developer’s 16 October 2026 press release says the PC version is planned for 2027. Steam currently gives no firm launch date and displays “To be announced.” No console version is established by those announcements. Treat the 2027 date as a plan rather than a guaranteed release window, and check the store listing again before buying hardware or planning a gift.

Family-friendly alternatives at a glance

The table separates the qualities parents usually mean when they ask for a game like Hanno: the strength of the companion idea, the role of exploration and puzzles, the intensity of combat, age guidance, where the game can be played, and its emotional or fairytale tone.

Best overall match: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Link’s Awakening is the strongest all-round recommendation when the child wants to explore a colorful place, work through puzzles and gradually understand how the map fits together. Its remake presents a staged world opening: new areas and dungeons become available as the player solves problems and gains the tools needed to continue. That rhythm resembles the kind of cooperative discovery promised by Hanno more closely than a menu-driven RPG does.

The companion relationship is not the game’s main mechanic, so it should not be sold as an elephant-companion equivalent. Its strength is elsewhere: a clear hero, memorable characters, whimsical presentation and dungeons built around observation and problem solving. GamesRadar describes the remake as approachable while noting that some areas can challenge children. A child who can read short instructions and tolerate trying a puzzle more than once is a better fit than a very young first-time player.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Choose it when

  • The child enjoys finding routes, switches and hidden solutions.
  • You want a self-contained adventure rather than a long character-collection campaign.
  • A little challenge is welcome, but you still want an unmistakably family-oriented presentation.

Watch for

Do not assume every section will be effortless because the rating is E/PEGI 7. Some puzzles and rooms can require patience, and a parent may need to help a new player interpret the environment rather than the controls.

Easiest first RPG: Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!

These two Switch games are the safest starting point when a child is asking for an RPG but has not learned one before. They use bright Kanto environments, clearly explained battles and an interactive catching loop that is easy to understand. The player can see the appeal of collecting creatures immediately, while the turn-based battle structure gives time to read choices instead of demanding fast reactions.

The partner Pokémon supplies a gentle version of the companion fantasy. It is not the same mutual-dependence system described for Vimal and Hanno, yet the partner is present throughout the journey and gives the child a recognizable emotional anchor. The games also make progress legible: explore a route, meet creatures, catch them, and use the resulting team in the next challenge.

Choose the edition

The two editions share the same family-friendly structure. The practical choice is which partner and version-specific Pokémon the child prefers. If the child already has a favorite, that preference is more meaningful than treating one edition as mechanically superior.

Choose it when

  • The child wants a first RPG with simple explanations and readable turns.
  • Collecting and caring about a team sounds more appealing than solving elaborate dungeon puzzles.
  • You want a Switch-only option with E/PEGI 7 guidance.

Low-pressure wandering: Dragon Quest Treasures

Dragon Quest Treasures suits children who like the idea of setting out with a small group, recruiting monsters and deciding what to investigate next. Its child protagonists and loose wander-and-discover structure make it less rigid than a corridor-like story. The emphasis is on curiosity and assembling a helpful team, so the game can feel like a gentle expedition rather than a sequence of high-stakes battles.

Monster recruitment gives the companion idea more mechanical weight than in a conventional platform adventure. The creatures are part of how the player approaches the world, while the low-pressure structure leaves room to experiment. That makes it a useful bridge between Pokémon: Let’s Go and a larger action RPG: there is collecting and team-building, but also a broad place to roam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when

  • The child wants to discover areas without being pushed through a tightly timed mission.
  • Recruiting a changing group of monsters sounds better than relying on one permanent partner.
  • You need Switch or PC availability and PEGI 7/ESRB E10 guidance is appropriate.

Best for creative families: Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time

Fantasy Life i is the broadest recommendation for families who want to make things as well as fight or follow a plot. Questing is combined with citybuilding, terrain shaping and furniture collection, and optional co-op gives family members a way to participate together. The game’s appeal is not one specific animal companion; it is the freedom to shape an activity loop around the child’s interests.

A player who enjoys decorating, collecting or changing a landscape may stay engaged even when combat is not the current goal. That flexibility also helps mixed-age households: one child can focus on quests while another experiments with construction or objects. Because the game spans many activities, parents should expect a larger set of systems to learn than in Link’s Awakening or Let’s Go.

Choose it when

  • The child prefers building and collecting to a single linear story.
  • You want optional co-op rather than a strictly solo adventure.
  • You need the widest platform coverage in this list: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X.

Its ESRB E10 and PEGI 7 guidance places it above the simplest E-rated choices, so preview the interface and pace with a younger player before committing to a long campaign.

Gentle action comedy: Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is a good fit when the child wants a humorous story, sea travel and short exploration segments rather than a large open-ended world. The central relationship is between the two brothers, which makes it a different kind of companion story from Hanno’s boy-and-elephant partnership. The emotional idea is still cooperation: progress depends on the pair acting together.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Combat uses timing-based inputs, but the game is forgiving when a child misses them. That matters for players who enjoy action but are not ready for strict reaction tests. The Switch’s E and PEGI 7 guidance also makes it a practical choice for younger children who have outgrown very simple platform games.

Choose it when

  • Humor and character animation matter more than collecting a large roster.
  • The child likes short, clearly framed challenges.
  • You want action that rewards timing without making every missed input costly.

Closest fairytale mood for older children: Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is the closest tonal match for readers who mean “a magical, animated fairytale adventure” rather than “a game with an elephant companion.” Its presentation is warmer and more storybook-like than the younger-rated choices, and it offers a larger narrative journey. The trade-off is age guidance: ESRB T and PEGI 12 indicate that it belongs with older children, and the story carries heavier themes than its inviting art style might suggest.

Use this recommendation for a child who already follows longer stories, understands that an attractive cartoon style does not guarantee a preschool tone, and is comfortable with more involved role-playing systems. It is not the default substitute for a young child waiting for Hanno; it is the fairytale option for a mature reader of this list.

For Disney fans who can follow a complex premise: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix combines Disney worlds with Final Fantasy characters and follows a young hero through an action-focused adventure. That recognizable crossover can be a powerful hook for a child who already enjoys those worlds. The companion feeling comes from traveling with familiar allies rather than from one animal whose abilities unlock the entire game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The main caution is narrative complexity. The crossover premise spans multiple games and concepts, so a child may enjoy individual worlds while losing track of the larger plot. ESRB E10 and PEGI 12 listings should be checked for the specific edition and territory, especially because this collection packages several releases together.

Choose it when

  • The child already knows the featured Disney worlds and wants action combat.
  • Following a layered, sometimes confusing story is acceptable.
  • You need PC, PS4, Xbox One or Switch availability.

For older children who want a storybook RPG: Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy IX begins with a fairytale-like presentation and a story-driven party of young characters. That makes it a natural recommendation for an older child who values relationships, dialogue and a traditional role-playing journey more than real-time exploration. The party structure offers a strong sense of companionship, although it is not built around one magical animal partner.

The age qualification is important. It carries ESRB T and PEGI 12 guidance, and later sections move into darker themes. Parents should make the decision based on the child’s emotional readiness, not only on the game’s colorful early appearance. The game is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch, which can make it easier to play on an existing system.

Pick by the quality your child wants most

If the priority is… Start with… Why
Puzzles and a world that opens gradually Link’s Awakening Its dungeons and staged exploration put problem solving first.
The simplest first RPG Pokémon: Let’s Go Readable battles and an easy-to-grasp catching loop reduce friction.
Roaming and recruiting creatures Dragon Quest Treasures Monster recruitment supports a low-pressure discovery structure.
Building, collecting and co-op Fantasy Life i Citybuilding, terrain shaping and furniture collection broaden the play loop.
Short, funny action scenes Mario & Luigi: Brothership Sea travel and forgiving timing combat keep sessions approachable.
Animated fairytale atmosphere for an older child Ni no Kuni II It offers the closest mood, but T/12 guidance requires more maturity.
A familiar crossover universe Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix Disney and Final Fantasy worlds provide an immediate hook.
A classic, character-heavy RPG Final Fantasy IX Its fairytale opening develops into a more serious story for older children.

How these games compare with Hanno’s central bond

None of the available alternatives reproduces the exact idea announced for Hanno: one companion whose magic only works in a particular relationship with the boy. The closest matches divide that idea among different systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a persistent partner feeling: Pokémon: Let’s Go keeps a partner creature beside the player, but its main loop is catching and battling rather than shared traversal abilities.
  • For a team of creatures: Dragon Quest Treasures turns recruited monsters into the expedition’s support network.
  • For cooperation between protagonists: Mario & Luigi: Brothership makes the relationship between its two heroes the basis for play.
  • For environmental problem solving: Link’s Awakening comes closest to the promise of using observation and abilities to open the next part of a world.
  • For a fairytale emotional register: Ni no Kuni II is the strongest fit, provided the child is ready for T/12 material.

Age-rating and platform checks parents should make

ESRB and PEGI ratings are useful starting points, not guarantees that every child will have the same experience. They can differ by territory, edition and later platform release. Confirm the rating shown for the version you intend to buy, particularly for collections such as Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix and games available on several generations of hardware.

Platform availability can also change. The alternatives listed here are the platforms identified for the versions discussed: Switch for Link’s Awakening, Pokémon: Let’s Go and Mario & Luigi: Brothership; Switch and PC for Dragon Quest Treasures; PC, PlayStation, Switch, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X for Fantasy Life i; and the broader PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch combinations shown in the comparison table for the older-child RPGs. Check the current store page for your region before purchase.

A practical waiting plan for families

  1. Decide which Hanno feature matters most. If it is puzzles, start with Link’s Awakening. If it is a creature partner, begin with Pokémon: Let’s Go or Dragon Quest Treasures.
  2. Match the game to the child’s tolerance for challenge. Choose the forgiving timing combat of Brothership or the straightforward battles of Let’s Go before a more demanding adventure.
  3. Check the exact platform and regional rating. Store listings and ratings can change by edition, so verify them immediately before purchase.
  4. Set a realistic session goal. A first dungeon, a short route or one building project is easier to finish than an open-ended promise to complete the whole game.
  5. Revisit Hanno’s status later. The announced PC window is 2027, but Steam still says “To be announced.” Treat any later date as the current information only after checking the developer or store listing.

Verdict

Start with The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening if you want one family adventure that balances exploration and puzzles most successfully. Pick Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! for the gentlest first RPG, and choose Dragon Quest Treasures or Fantasy Life i when discovery and creativity matter more than a tightly directed plot. Save Ni no Kuni II, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy IX for older children who can handle their T/12 guidance or heavier themes. None duplicates Hanno’s boy-and-elephant bond, but together they cover the same family-friendly reasons to be excited while the PC game remains in development.
