Slay the Spire is the best first choice if what you love in 9 Kings is assembling a small, compounding engine from cards. Choose The King is Watching when the kingdom grid, building placement and defense planning matter most. Choose Hades if you want the same run-to-run experimentation and spectacular power growth in a real-time action game.
These games do not copy every system in 9 Kings. They match different parts of its appeal: stacking modifiers until a build becomes absurd, making meaningful choices with incomplete information, and restarting runs with a better plan.

What makes 9 Kings distinctive?
9 Kings combines several genres that are usually separated. The official wiki describes it as a turn-based roguelike deckbuilder with auto-battler, tower-defense and city-building elements. During a run, you play cards that place or upgrade buildings and units, arrange your kingdom on a grid, cast spells and survive attacks from rival kings. The objective is not merely to win one battle; it is to stack buffs and modifiers until your army becomes effectively invincible.
Each of the nine kings has a distinct deck. You can loot cards from rivals, make peace with a king whose cards do not suit your plan, or declare war to take the powers you want. That diplomacy layer means a run is partly a deckbuilding puzzle and partly a negotiation about which future options to unlock.

The standard single-player run lasts 33 turns, after which you can continue in optional endless play. The game also lists asynchronous multiplayer and a quest mode. The Steam storefront gives the Early Access release as 23 May 2025; the official wiki records 24 May 2025, a one-day difference that reflects the source’s date convention rather than two separate launches. Steam currently lists a planned full-release date of 12 November 2026. Treat that as a plan, not as confirmation that the 1.0 release has already happened; the developers say the full version is intended to include all nine kings, additional perks and new modes.
If your favorite moment is watching several modest effects combine into a ridiculous army, use the comparison below to identify which game preserves that feeling most closely.
Which game is the closest match?
| Game | Primary build tools | Combat format | Management pressure | Best fit for a 9 Kings player | Main difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 Kings | Cards, buildings, units, spells and king-specific modifiers | Turn-based preparation with auto-battler and defense outcomes | Grid layout, economy, diplomacy and escalating attacks | Players who want all systems at once and deliberately broken armies | The reference point |
| Slay the Spire | Cards and relics that create compounding interactions | Turn-based card combat | Route selection, deck control and limited resources | Players who care most about finding a compact, repeatable card engine | No kingdom grid, city economy or army management |
| The King is Watching | Buildings, spells and a spatial kingdom layout | Real-time attacks and defense | Grid placement, gaze-limited activation and prerequisite management | Players who enjoy arranging a realm and defending it under pressure | Less brisk and more dependent on favorable random draws |
| Hades | Olympian boons, weapon choices and permanent upgrades | Real-time action dungeon runs | Movement, enemy patterns and between-run progression | Players who want experimentation and dramatic power growth rather than construction | No cards, kingdom building or spatial economy |
1. Slay the Spire: the purest overpowered card-engine alternative
Slay the Spire is the strongest recommendation when your favorite part of 9 Kings is the moment a build starts feeding itself. Mega Crit presents it as a fusion of card games and roguelikes, with dynamic deckbuilding, branching routes, relics that create powerful interactions, and hundreds of cards and items.

Why its synergies feel familiar
Every choice changes the shape of the run. You decide whether to add a card, remove a weak one, take a relic with a narrow condition, or follow a route that offers more risk for better rewards. A small deck makes each draw more predictable, while the right relic can turn an ordinary card into the central piece of an engine. That is the same broad pleasure as combining a building, unit and modifier in 9 Kings: the payoff comes from relationships between effects rather than from one item being powerful in isolation.

Where it differs from 9 Kings
There is no kingdom grid to arrange and no population of units fighting independently. You control a single character in turn-based battles, so your “layout” is the order and density of your deck, not the position of buildings. There is also no rival-king diplomacy system. The game is therefore a better fit for players who want to optimize a build’s probabilities and interactions, not for players whose favorite decision is where to place a defensive structure.
Who should start here?
- Choose it if you want the clearest feedback from every card and relic decision.
- Choose it if you enjoy replaying a familiar route with a different engine each time.
- Choose it if you want turn-based planning without real-time execution.
Expect a more concentrated puzzle than 9 Kings. The scale is smaller, but the opportunity to make a deck behave in an intentionally unfair way is exceptionally high.
2. The King is Watching: the closest kingdom-grid comparison
The King is Watching is the structural match for players who remember the kingdom more than the cards. A PC Gamer comparison describes a game built around a grid, buildings, spells and kingdom defense. Its attacks occur in real time, and only the portion of the realm within the king’s gaze is active, making placement a constant operational decision.
Why the layout matters
A building is not useful simply because you own it. Its position determines whether it is activated, how efficiently it supports neighboring infrastructure and whether the active part of your realm can survive the next assault. That creates a spatial puzzle similar to arranging farms, production and defenses in 9 Kings, but with less time to reconsider once an attack begins.

The cost of bad randomness
The same comparison highlights a harsher random element: a powerful card can remain unusable when its prerequisites fail to appear. In a run built around a specific chain, that can leave you defending with an incomplete plan. The result is more volatile than the typical 9 Kings setup, where you can often change diplomatic targets or pursue a different combination of kings’ cards.
Who should choose it?
Pick this game if you like making a plan for a whole settlement, then adapting that plan as attacks and available options disrupt it. It is less brisk and can feel more dependent on favorable rolls than 9 Kings, so it suits players who accept that a strong layout may still need to be rebuilt when the prerequisites do not arrive.
3. Hades: run-based experimentation without the kingdom
Hades moves the formula into real-time action. Supergiant describes it as a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which Olympian boons enhance your abilities, with thousands of viable character builds to discover and permanent upgrades between escape attempts.

The shared appeal is iterative discovery. Each escape attempt offers a different combination of powers, and a failed run still teaches you which effects work together, which weapons suit your timing and which upgrades deserve priority. Boons can change how an attack behaves, how safely you can approach a room or how quickly a build reaches its damage ceiling. The permanent upgrade system also gives repeated attempts a sense of progress beyond the immediate run.

What you give up
There are no cards to trim, buildings to place or rival kings to negotiate with. You must aim, dodge and attack in real time, and your execution matters as much as your build. The game is therefore a weaker mechanical match for anyone whose enjoyment comes from watching an army resolve automatically or from solving a production layout.
Who should play it?
Choose Hades when you want the excitement of discovering a wildly overpowered combination but prefer character-driven presentation and direct control. It is especially suitable if 33-turn planning sounds appealing but you want each room to demand immediate decisions rather than a carefully arranged battlefield.

Do you want cards, space or action?
- Cards and probability: start with Slay the Spire. Your deck and relics define what is possible on each turn.
- Spatial and economic management: start with The King is Watching. The grid and gaze rule make placement part of every defense.
- Real-time execution: start with Hades. Build choices matter, but movement and attack timing decide whether you can use them.
How much randomness can you tolerate?
Slay the Spire asks you to manage uncertainty through route choices, deck size and flexible card selections. The King is Watching is the least forgiving of the three alternatives in the documented comparison because a missing prerequisite can make a strong card unusable. Hades changes your available powers from run to run, but permanent upgrades and player skill provide ways to compensate for an awkward offering.

9 Kings gives you a defined 33-turn single-player structure before optional endless play. Slay the Spire and Hades also revolve around discrete attempts with a clear failure-and-restart rhythm. The King is Watching puts more emphasis on maintaining a functioning realm while attacks unfold in real time, so a session can feel less like a tightly bounded card puzzle and more like an ongoing defense problem.

How to choose your first game
- Write down the moment you want to repeat. If it is a card combination becoming self-sustaining, select Slay the Spire. If it is seeing a well-arranged kingdom survive, select The King is Watching. If it is obtaining a boon that transforms your attacks, select Hades.
- Decide whether you want to manage a system or operate a character. The first two alternatives emphasize planning systems; Hades emphasizes moment-to-moment control.
- Choose your tolerance for a failed plan. Pick the card game for the most deliberate mitigation, the kingdom game for higher layout-and-prerequisite volatility, or the action game if execution can rescue an imperfect build.
- Start with one build idea, not a complete blueprint. Roguelike runs change the available cards, relics, buildings or boons. A flexible core is more reliable than waiting for every component of a prewritten combo.
What to expect from 9 Kings itself
If you are deciding whether to stay with 9 Kings rather than move to an alternative, its unusual combination is the deciding factor. The game lets you combine card acquisition, diplomacy, grid placement, city development, spells and an auto-battler-style army in one run. You can pursue a rival’s cards through war, reject them through peace, or adapt when the available powers suggest a different strategy. That breadth is why none of the three recommendations is a complete substitute.
The current Early Access status also matters. Steam lists 23 May 2025 as the storefront release date and a planned transition out of Early Access on 12 November 2026, with all nine kings, more perks and new modes intended for the full version. Features and balance can therefore change before that date. The existing modes include 33-turn single-player runs with optional endless play, asynchronous multiplayer and quest mode, giving you several ways to test the same build philosophy.
Bottom line: which game should you play?
Buy Slay the Spire for the closest match to 9 Kings‘ overpowered card-synergy thrill. Pick The King is Watching for kingdom layout, buildings and defense under spatial constraints. Pick Hades for a polished real-time roguelite where boons and permanent upgrades produce enormous build variety. None reproduces the full cards-plus-city-plus-army combination, but each preserves a different reason that a 9 Kings run can become delightfully broken.
