Gamer mum’s 24-hour GTA 6 launch-day childcare plan divides the internet

A London mother’s plan to book a 24-hour sleepover for her daughter so she can play Grand Theft Auto VI at launch has triggered an argument about gaming, childcare and parental priorities. Bex said the sleepover would begin at midday on launch day, after she started downloading the game on her PS5 that morning.

What Bex planned for GTA 6 launch day

Bex described her arrangement in a post aimed at other parents preparing for the release. “Question for GTA parents: What are we doing about childcare? Because I have booked my daughter in for a 24-hour sleepover starting at 12 o’clock, midday on the day it comes out,” she said.

Her timing was built around the expected download and installation period. “Because my logic was that we could start downloading it on the PS5 in the morning. It’ll probably take a few hours to download. By the time it’s up and running, it’ll probably be nearly 12, I’ll drop my daughter off, so that way I’m not wasting any time,” she continued.

That makes the plan a dedicated block of childcare rather than an attempt to play while supervising a child. The report does not state the daughter’s age, whether the sleepover was with family or friends, or whether the arrangement was made specifically for the game beyond Bex’s description.

When GTA 6 is scheduled to launch

The report lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It presents the release as arriving roughly 13 years after Grand Theft Auto V, a framing used in the article rather than a separately verified release-history calculation.

The same report repeats claims that Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 230 million copies and generated more than $8 billion, but it does not identify a publishing organisation or dated primary-source citation for those figures. They should not be treated as independently confirmed sales or revenue data.

Why the reaction became so polarized

Supportive and joking responses

Some commenters treated the idea as an elaborate but understandable way to protect uninterrupted launch time. Suggestions included stocking survival food, taking time off work, rotating childcare with other adults, and splitting nursery, meals and bedtime duties. These comments were practical or humorous rather than evidence that most parents support the arrangement.

Criticism of the priority

Other commenters objected to arranging a full day and night away from a child for a video game. One critic wrote: “Maybe try being a parent and prioritising your children over a game and accept you have frown up responsibilities now.” Another commenter said: “As a 42-year-old gamer who’s been playing video games most of my life… I wouldn’t dare leave my kids for 24 hours just to play a video game… I’m just a decent parent like that. I’ll game when they’re in bed.”

The visible comments therefore split between people treating the release as a rare event worth planning around and people who regard ordinary family duties as more important than launch-day access.

What “the internet is divided” actually means here

“Divided” describes the opposing comments shown in the report, not a measured public opinion. The article provides no verified sample size, representative poll, demographic breakdown or independent survey of gamer parents. It is not possible to say what proportion of parents approve or disapprove of Bex’s plan from the reactions quoted.

Online replies also tend to amplify extreme, funny or confrontational views. A comment thread can show that both attitudes exist without establishing how common either one is among GTA players or parents.

Launch-day options for gamer parents

Parents can choose different ways to combine a major game release with family responsibilities. The trade-offs are clearer when the options are separated:

Approach Childcare coverage Download and installation Family and sleep impact
Dedicated sleepover or overnight care A separate, pre-arranged block of care; Bex’s plan begins at midday and lasts 24 hours Allows a morning PS5 download before the care period starts; the actual duration is not confirmed Requires agreement with the other household and changes the child’s normal routine
Shared rotations Adults divide nursery, meals, bedtime and supervision Play windows depend on the rota and installation progress Preserves shared responsibility but may produce shorter sessions and interrupted sleep
Play after bedtime No additional childcare if a child is safely asleep and an adult remains responsible Download can run earlier; playing time begins later Protects daytime family plans but can reduce the parent’s sleep
Short launch session Use an existing sitter, family visit or normal childcare for a limited period Play starts when the console is ready rather than requiring a full day away Limits disruption while still marking the release

The right choice depends on the child’s needs, the adults’ agreement, safety arrangements and work commitments. A long gaming session is not automatically irresponsible, but childcare should be dependable and the child’s welfare should not be treated as an afterthought.

Can you download GTA 6 before launch?

Bex said she intended to start the download on her PS5 in the morning. The report does not confirm a preload date, preload policy, file size, download speed or the exact time at which the game can be played. Those details can vary by platform, territory and edition and must be confirmed in the relevant console store or the publisher’s launch information when made available.

Starting a download is not the same as gaining early access. A console may download encrypted files before release but still keep the game locked until the official launch time. Parents planning a launch session should also leave time for installation, patches, available storage and possible network congestion rather than assuming that a morning download guarantees a midday start.

Practical checks before arranging childcare

  1. Confirm the platform and edition. The reported launch platforms are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; check that the purchase matches the console being used.
  2. Check the official store listing. Look for any stated preload window, release time, storage requirement and day-one update information.
  3. Test the console beforehand. Install system updates, sign in, verify payment details and make enough storage available without deleting an irreplaceable save.
  4. Plan for delays. A large download, installation step or launch-day server demand can move the playable time later than expected.
  5. Set the childcare handoff clearly. Confirm the supervising adult, emergency contact details, meals, medication, bedtime expectations and pickup time.
  6. Keep family commitments explicit. Agree in advance how household tasks, work, sleep and the child’s normal routine will be covered.

The broader argument about gaming and parenting

The disagreement is less about one download than about how parents allocate scarce leisure time. One side sees a major release as an occasional event that can be planned like a concert, sports match or night out. The other sees a 24-hour absence for a game as disproportionate and prefers gaming after children are asleep or during ordinary childcare.

Bex’s post supplies one person’s solution, not a standard for all families. The report establishes that both supportive jokes and serious criticism appeared, while leaving the more important context—age, consent, household arrangements and the child’s experience—unknown.
