Most of these GameCube games do not need identical treatment. The best preservation plan ranges from a careful remaster for Viewtiful Joe to online restoration for Phantasy Star Online, a fuller remake for Eternal Darkness, and no second dedicated release for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door unless it adds something beyond the 2024 Switch version. This is a preservation wishlist, not a list of announced projects.
What makes a GameCube remaster worthwhile?
A remaster should preserve a game’s identity while improving presentation, controls, readability, accessibility and modern platform support. A remake can rebuild systems or presentation more substantially. That distinction matters here: replacing a game’s unusual mechanics with safer contemporary design would defeat the purpose of preserving it.

The ten choices below come from a recurring fan conversation about games blocked by limited access, aging interfaces or hardware-specific multiplayer. Each proposal asks five practical questions: how the game can be played officially now, what remains distinctive, what specifically needs work, how much change is justified and whether rights or licensing could complicate a release. Creative merit does not prove that a publisher currently controls the necessary rights.

1. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Access now
The original GameCube release remains the reference point, and the source list describes it as particularly difficult to access without an official modern release. That status should be checked against a current regional catalogue before buying hardware or a used copy; availability can change. A physical GameCube copy is the collector route, but stock, condition and prices vary by country and seller.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
What must be preserved
The game’s defining ideas are its sanity meter, fourth-wall-breaking effects and multi-era structure. The shifting perspectives and escalating psychological tricks are not decoration: they are the way the horror works. A remaster that removes or softens them would preserve the plot while losing the game’s design.
What needs work
Movement and combat feel stiff by current standards, fixed-camera transitions can obscure threats, and aiming or interacting is less forgiving than players expect on modern controllers. The remake should add camera and control options, clearer hit feedback, faster inventory navigation and a way to tune motion or visual effects for people sensitive to screen distortion.
How much change is justified
This is the strongest case for a full remake rather than a resolution bump. New environments and lighting could improve atmosphere, but the sanity effects, chapter order and deliberate disorientation should remain intact. Quality-of-life options should be optional so the original tension is still available.

Rights and feasibility
The creative case is unusually strong, but current publishing and remake rights were not established in the available evidence. A publisher would need to confirm ownership and licensing before any project could be announced.
2. Viewtiful Joe
Access now
The game debuted on GameCube and later reached PlayStation 2. The source article describes it as absent from modern platforms, but that present-day status needs a fresh catalogue check before being treated as definitive.
What must be preserved
Viewtiful Joe’s cel-shaded look, comic-book presentation and time powers—slowing, speeding and stopping action—form one tightly integrated action system. Encounters are puzzles about timing, not merely sequences of attacks.
What needs work
The difficulty curve spikes sharply, especially when the game expects mastery of several powers at once. A remaster should add a gentler first run, clearer explanations for advanced interactions and a practice option that lets players rehearse enemy patterns without replaying entire stages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow much change is justified
A conservative remaster is enough. Keep enemy behavior, stage layouts, scoring and the audiovisual style, then add modern controller mapping, suspend-resume support, readable subtitles and portable play. Optional assist settings can widen the audience without rewriting the challenge.
Rights and feasibility
Current rights for a new release were not verified. The game’s return depends on a rights holder being able to clear the character, music and publishing arrangements.
3. Star Fox Adventures
Access now
The GameCube game is the established version discussed by the source list. Its development history is tied to Dinosaur Planet, but that history does not mean a remaster should erase its Star Fox identity.
What must be preserved
Fox’s unusual ground-based adventure, the world of Dinosaur Planet and the contrast between exploration, staff combat and short vehicle sections are the point. Its identity comes from being an adventure game starring a character normally associated with space combat.
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
What needs work
Tricky’s companion tasks become repetitive, some audio presentation feels dated and several puzzles provide too little information about the intended interaction. A remaster should vary companion objectives, provide optional hints and improve sound mixing without removing the need to explore.
How much change is justified
A remaster with accessibility tools is appropriate. Rebalancing backtracking and adding puzzle hints solves the largest friction points; a wholesale combat redesign would risk turning the game into something it was never meant to be.
Rights and feasibility
The development backstory explains the game’s unusual shape, not its current licensing position. No current third-party rights determination was established, so feasibility remains a separate question from the creative proposal.
4. TimeSplitters 2
Access now
The source list identifies corporate history and ownership as part of the access problem, but current ownership and publishing rights were not verified. It is therefore safer to describe the game as a candidate with a rights question than to claim that a release is legally blocked.

The time-spanning campaign, fast arcade shooting, memorable characters and substantial map editor still give it a clear identity. The editor is as important to preservation as the story missions because it lets players create their own scenarios.
What needs work
Modern online multiplayer is the obvious addition, but it should not stop there. Campaign co-op, reliable matchmaking, cross-region server options and a level-sharing service would make the editor useful to a new audience. Browser-style browsing, moderation and report tools would be necessary if user-created maps were shared publicly.
How much change is justified
This calls for a remaster-plus package: preserve weapons, enemy pacing and maps, then build contemporary networking around them. Optional aim and field-of-view settings should be added without changing the original difficulty.
Rights and feasibility
Rights are unresolved in the available evidence. Any announcement would require confirmation of the current owner, trademarks, music and online-service responsibilities.

5. Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I & II
Access now
The GameCube edition combined split-screen play with online functionality and originally depended on dedicated accessories and network arrangements. Exact historical hardware requirements should be checked against primary documentation when they matter to a particular setup.
What must be preserved
The class system, loot hunt, hub-and-mission loop and cooperative rhythm are the core. Players should still prepare in the lobby, choose a class role and venture into increasingly dangerous areas for better equipment.
What needs work
Restored online play is the priority. Modern matchmaking, friend invitations, drop-in sessions, latency indicators, account security and clear server-status information would remove barriers that had nothing to do with the original combat. Local split-screen should remain available.
Rank #3
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
How much change is justified
This should be an online restoration with a visual and interface remaster, not a new live-service game. Preserve enemy behavior, itemization and progression; modernize menus, text readability, controller support and network infrastructure.
Rights and feasibility
Current rights and licensing for a new edition were not verified. An online release would also require a long-term service plan, making ownership and support commitments especially important.
6. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Access now
The original concept was built around DK Bongos. A later Wii version offered standard controls, but its exact implementation should be verified before drawing technical conclusions.
What must be preserved
Movement, rhythm and momentum are inseparable from the game’s identity. The bongos turn running, jumping and attacking into a physical timing exercise unlike a conventional platformer.
What needs work
A new edition should support both DK Bongos and standard controllers. Standard controls must be an option, not a replacement: the original control idea should remain the preferred way to experience the game for players who want it. HD visuals, cleaner effects and additional worlds could extend the package.
How much change is justified
A dual-control remaster is the right scale. Add remappable buttons, calibration, left-handed options and a clear explanation of timing windows, then leave the level design and scoring intact.
Rights and feasibility
No current rights assessment was established. Peripheral support would also need a practical manufacturing or compatibility plan if new bongos were not included.
7. F-ZERO GX
Access now
Nintendo’s European catalogue for Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics lists F-ZERO GX for Switch 2. The page gives the collection’s release date as June 5, 2025 and says access requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Those are regional catalogue details and may change; they should not be generalized to every country.
What must be preserved
The speed, technical driving, inventive tracks and demanding challenge are the attraction. Removing difficult corners or slowing the game to make it broadly comfortable would undermine its competitive character.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What needs work
Modern display support and online racing would provide the biggest gains. Better practice tools, ghost sharing, spectator features and clear latency indicators could help newcomers learn without reducing the underlying challenge.
How much change is justified
A performance-focused remaster is sufficient. 4K resolution at 60 frames per second is a sensible design target, not a confirmed specification. The project should prioritize stable frame pacing, fast loading and online reliability over cosmetic rewrites.
Rank #4
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Rights and feasibility
Because an official regional Switch 2 access path exists, the case is for a richer edition rather than basic preservation. Any separate release would still depend on Nintendo’s platform and product plans.
8. Kirby Air Ride
Access now
The candidate remains associated with its GameCube release in the source list. No current broad availability claim is established here, so access should be checked by region and platform before purchase decisions.
What must be preserved
City Trial deserves to be the centerpiece. Automatic acceleration, steering and timing make the mode unusual: players spend a timed round collecting upgrades and choosing routes before a final event tests those decisions.
What needs work
Online support could make City Trial practical for players who no longer have a room full of local participants. Matchmaking filters, private lobbies, reconnection handling and spectator tools would matter as much as netcode. Tutorials should explain the game’s unusual controls without forcing traditional acceleration onto it.
How much change is justified
A multiplayer remaster is enough. Preserve automatic movement and the upgrade economy, add online play and improve menus, camera options and accessibility. The argument for online support is a design hypothesis about audience fit, not measured demand.
Rights and feasibility
This is a Nintendo-controlled concept in the original list, but no announcement or production plan exists. A release would depend on Nintendo choosing to invest in the mode and support its servers.

9. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Access now
Nintendo released a Switch remaster in May 2024. That makes this game a benchmark rather than an unreleased omission: it demonstrates how updated graphics and presentation can preserve writing, characters and timing-based battle mechanics.
What must be preserved
The original’s humor, partner abilities, badge system and action commands are the foundation. Any further edition should retain the dialogue and turn-based structure that define the adventure.
What needs work
A second dedicated release would need a clear purpose beyond duplicating the 2024 version. Possible value could come from expanded challenge modes, stronger accessibility controls, archival extras or a well-supported platform edition, but none of those additions should be assumed to exist.
How much change is justified
No new remaster is necessary for ordinary access. The 2024 Switch version is the modern benchmark; a hypothetical further edition would have to add substantial preservation or play features to justify itself.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Rights and feasibility
Nintendo has already demonstrated the ability to produce a modern version, so the question is product value rather than an unverified third-party rights obstacle.
Best Value
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
10. Luigi’s Mansion
Access now
The game received a 3DS remake, and Nintendo’s European GameCube collection catalogue lists Luigi’s Mansion for Switch 2. The same catalogue identifies June 5, 2025 as the collection’s release date and requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The collection listing is an official reproduction route, not the same thing as a new remake, and regional catalogues can differ.
What must be preserved
The flashlight-and-vacuum loop, haunted-house exploration, room-by-room puzzle solving and Luigi’s nervous presentation should remain central. The game’s compact structure is part of its charm.
What needs work
A dedicated enhanced edition could build on the 3DS remake with HD assets, improved lighting, modern camera options and optional online co-op. Cooperative play would need puzzles that remain readable when two players occupy the same room, plus difficulty and revive rules that do not trivialize solo exploration.
How much change is justified
This is a case for an enhanced edition only if it offers more than the 3DS remake and the Switch 2 collection reproduction. Otherwise, current official versions already cover preservation and access.
Rights and feasibility
As a Nintendo property with multiple modern versions, feasibility is less mysterious than for third-party candidates. The unresolved issue is whether a separate release would provide enough new content to justify its development.
What the audience evidence actually says
A Nintendo Life poll in 2023 asked readers, “Which GameCube game do you think deserves the 10/10 remake treatment?” It recorded 2,221 votes. The leading choices were F-Zero GX at 16%, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem at 14%, Skies of Arcadia Legends at 13%, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door at 10% and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes at 5%.
Those figures show that the conversation predates this list and that several other games have strong fan visibility. They are one outlet’s 2023 poll, not representative market research, current sales data or proof that a remaster would be commercially successful. A separate 2023 Nintendo Life article likewise discussed Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, F-ZERO GX, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Eternal Darkness, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader and Skies of Arcadia Legends, demonstrating how long-running the discussion is.
How to read Nintendo’s current GameCube access announcements
Nintendo’s official Canadian announcement says the collection is available exclusively with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Nintendo Switch 2 and states: “Three classic games have been added, and more will be released in the future—so without further ado, let’s get to it.” The European catalogue separately lists a June 5, 2025 release date. Together, those pages establish an official modern access path for the titles listed there; they do not establish that the entire GameCube library is available, nor that every region has the same catalogue.
That distinction changes the wishlist. F-ZERO GX and Luigi’s Mansion are no longer examples of games with no official modern access in the European Switch 2 context. Eternal Darkness, Viewtiful Joe, TimeSplitters 2 and Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I & II still need individual catalogue checks rather than blanket statements about the whole library.
Verdict: preserve the design, fix the barrier
The strongest projects are not the ones that promise the biggest graphics jump. Eternal Darkness needs controls and camera modernization without losing its psychological tricks; TimeSplitters 2, Phantasy Star Online and Kirby Air Ride need dependable multiplayer; Donkey Kong Jungle Beat needs to support both its bongos and ordinary controllers; and F-ZERO GX needs modern performance and online competition. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door already shows what a successful preservation-minded remaster can look like, while Luigi’s Mansion and F-ZERO GX have official regional collection access that any new edition would need to exceed.
