Compare the subscription cost for the months you will actually pay with the current prices of the specific games you intend to play. Game Pass can make sense if you play several included titles during a short subscription; buying may cost less if your shortlist is small, discounted, or includes games you want to keep playing after they leave the catalog.
How to compare the costs
Start with your own shortlist, platform, and expected play period—not a generic claim about how much gamers save. Use the regular subscription price, not a temporary introductory offer, and count only benefits you expect to use.

- List the games you intend to play. Check whether each is currently included with a plan that works on your platform. Catalog availability changes by plan, region, platform, and time, as Microsoft explains on its Game Pass comparison page.
- Price the purchase option. Add the current sale or purchase price of those exact games in your region. If considering discs, confirm your console has a disc drive: Xbox Series X supports disc games, while Xbox Series S is all-digital and cannot use them, according to the Microsoft Store FAQ.
- Count paid subscription months. Multiply the current regular monthly price by the number of months you expect to subscribe. Include only benefits you value and can use, such as included games or online console multiplayer.
- Compare the totals and the access you want. Subscription access depends on a game remaining available in the catalog. A purchase comparison is for buying the game; check the platform and store terms that apply to your purchase.
Formula: subscription total = current monthly plan price × paid months. Purchase total = sum of the actual prices of the games on your shortlist. This is a personal break-even comparison, not a universal threshold.

Current US Game Pass prices—and what they mean over a year
In a post dated April 21, 2026, Xbox announced US monthly prices of $22.99 for Game Pass Ultimate and $13.99 for PC Game Pass, down from $29.99 and $16.49 respectively. Xbox says prices may vary by region. The announcement is at Xbox Wire.

The 12-month amounts are arithmetic, before taxes, assuming the announced monthly price remains unchanged for all 12 months; they are not separate annual prices published by Microsoft. Microsoft’s comparison page also lists Premium and Essential, but its readable information does not establish their regular prices. Check local checkout for the current price of any plan you are considering.
The same April 21 announcement said future Call of Duty titles will not join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; new titles are expected to arrive during the following holiday season, about a year later. Existing Call of Duty titles already in the library remain available under the announcement. Release timing and plan terms can change, so check the current listing before making a decision.

When Game Pass may cost less
A subscription is more likely to work out when several games you genuinely want are included and you can play them within a limited number of paid months. The relevant comparison is the subscription total against what those same games would cost to buy—not the full catalog’s theoretical value.
- Several games on your shortlist are included on your platform and plan now.
- You expect to play them within a short, defined period rather than keep paying indefinitely.
- You will use other included benefits, such as online console multiplayer, enough to count them in your decision.
Use the current regular monthly price for the plan you can actually use. If you stop subscribing, access to catalog games is conditional on the subscription and the titles’ continued availability.

When buying games may cost less
Buying can be the lower-cost choice if you want only a few games, find them on sale, or expect to return to them beyond a short subscription window. Compare real purchase prices for your shortlist, including discounts—not full retail prices by default.
- The games you want are not included in an eligible plan, or you would play only one or two titles.
- You expect to play a title over a longer period than you want to keep paying for a subscription.
- You prefer physical discs and have compatible hardware. Xbox Series X supports game discs; Series S does not.
Digital purchases may suit supported platforms without a disc drive. The relevant comparison is the exact version, platform, and current regional price, not an assumed price for every game.

Account for recurring billing and promotions
Microsoft says subscriptions recur until canceled. Promotional offers can depend on eligibility, region, and timing; after an offer ends, the subscription continues at the then-current regular price unless canceled. - Whether you need continued access after a title might leave the catalog, and whether physical discs are an option for your hardware.
Add the game prices for the purchase total, calculate the subscription total, then compare. Recheck plan price, game inclusion, and sale prices when you make the decision: Microsoft notes that titles, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform.
Team Xbox framed the choice in its April 21, 2026 Xbox Wire update this way: “Our players cover a wide breadth of geographies, preferences, and tastes, so while there isn’t a single model that’s best for everyone, this change responds to a lot of feedback we’ve gotten so far.” Your own shortlist and playing habits determine which option costs less.
