Crunch is a deadline-driven stretch of unusually long game-development hours, but there is no single “normal” crunch schedule. In the International Game Developers Association’s surveys, nearly half of developers who experienced crunch worked more than 60 hours in a week, and a significant minority exceeded 70. Whether those hours must be paid, whether weekends can be required, and whether you receive recovery time depend on your country, worker classification, contract and collective agreement.
Before accepting or disputing a crunch schedule, get the overtime and time-off policy in writing, record every hour and instruction, and check the rules that apply where you work. The U.S. federal standard and European Union working-time floor are materially different, and employees, contractors and freelancers do not have identical protections.

What “crunch” means in game development
Crunch is a period of excessive or unusually long work hours tied to a milestone, certification deadline or release. The important distinction is whether it is an occasional, documented peak with a recovery plan or a recurring schedule that management treats as ordinary production capacity. Gameworkers.org describes crunch as excessive hours near deadlines and notes that it is often performed without additional pay.
A studio can call a schedule “voluntary” while still creating strong pressure through performance reviews, promotion decisions or fear of dismissal. Ask how availability is requested, who approves overtime and what happens if you decline. Those details matter more than the label attached to the schedule.

How common is crunch?
| Source and population | Finding | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Polish Gamedev Workers Union survey, January 2024 | 81% of companies opposed crunch; 27% of respondents crunched in 2023; 70% worked excessive overtime; 26% expected to crunch in 2024 | These figures describe that survey’s respondents and Polish game industry context, not a global rate. |
| IGDA release reporting its 2015 survey | Among developers who experienced crunch, nearly half worked more than 60 hours per week and 17% worked more than 70 hours | The figures apply to respondents who reported crunch in that survey. |
| IGDA release of its 2017 survey, published in 2018 | 14% reported working more than 70 hours during crunch | Different survey year and sample; it should not be combined with the 2015 percentages. |
The surveys also show why “crunch” cannot be reduced to one number. A team may have a 55-hour week before launch, while another is asked to work 75 hours for several weeks. Both may be described as crunch, but the legal and health consequences depend on duration, rest between shifts and local rules.
How many hours can a crunch week reach?
There is no industry-wide ceiling. The IGDA figures establish that weeks above 60 hours are common among people who reported crunch, and that some exceed 70. They do not establish that every developer works those hours or that a particular studio’s estimate is accurate.
Convert any verbal promise into a written schedule. Ask for the expected start and end times, weekend dates, on-call periods, release contingencies and the date normal hours resume. Include time spent in mandatory stand-ups, build monitoring, travel between required locations and responding to work messages outside the office; an “eight-hour day” that includes several hours of required availability may be longer in practice.

Long hours also interact with rest rules. A late-night build followed by an early-morning meeting can leave less recovery time than the weekly total suggests. In the EU, minimum daily and weekly rest rules provide a legal baseline; in the United States, federal law generally does not cap the number of hours an adult may work, so state law and employer policy become especially important.
Do game developers get paid for crunch or overtime?
A salary alone does not answer the overtime question. Check your written contract, classification, exemption language, local statute and any collective agreement. Also ask whether the employer knew about or permitted the extra hours; an unapproved-hours policy does not automatically erase hours the employer required, accepted or benefited from, but the legal result is jurisdiction-specific.

United States: federal overtime baseline
For covered, nonexempt employees, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime pay of at least one and one-half times the regular rate after 40 hours in a workweek. The U.S. Department of Labor states: “For covered, nonexempt employees, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires overtime pay (PDF) to be at least one and one-half times an employee’s regular rate of pay after 40 hours of work in a workweek.” Exemptions can apply to some salaried roles and duties, so a job title such as “producer” or “designer” is not conclusive.
The FLSA generally does not require paid vacation, holidays or sick leave, and it does not require a premium merely because work occurs at night or on a weekend. The Department of Labor says those premiums are ordinarily matters of agreement. State and local laws can provide stronger overtime, break or leave rights than the federal floor. The FLSA also generally does not limit total hours for adults, although safety rules, contracts and state requirements may impose limits.

Directive 2003/88/EC requires member states to implement minimum protections including 11 consecutive hours of daily rest, weekly rest, a break when a workday exceeds six hours, at least four weeks of paid annual leave and an average working week, including overtime, of no more than 48 hours. Article 6(b) states that “the average working time for each seven-day period, including overtime, does not exceed 48 hours.”
The directive is implemented through national law, which can define reference periods, sector exceptions and procedures for permitted opt-outs. Do not assume the directive’s wording is the exact rule for your contract: check the law and enforcement authority in the country where you work. Paid annual leave is a statutory floor in this system, unlike the U.S. federal baseline.
Employees, contractors and freelancers are not interchangeable
Employee protections may not extend to an independent contractor, agency worker or freelancer in the same way. Classification tests vary and can look at control, economic dependence, integration into the business and other factors. A contract that calls someone a contractor is not necessarily decisive, but changing a label on paper does not by itself create employee rights. Get local advice before relying on an overtime rule.

What compensation studios actually provide
Extra compensation is inconsistent. In the IGDA 2015 survey, 37% of employee respondents received no additional reward for overtime. Other respondents reported perks, time off or combinations of rewards. A bonus, meal, transport, merchandise or future “comp time” may be valuable, but it is not automatically a substitute for legally required wages. Ask when a payment is earned, how it is calculated and what happens if you leave before the release.
Can a studio require weekend or night work?
Whether a weekend can be required depends on the contract, scheduling law, collective agreement and your classification. A contract with broad availability language may give an employer more scheduling flexibility, but it does not override mandatory rest, overtime or anti-retaliation rules. Conversely, a studio may be able to schedule a weekend under an ordinary-hours clause while still owing overtime or violating a rest requirement.
Request the instruction in writing and ask four precise questions:
- Which dates and hours are mandatory, and who approved them?
- How will the hours be recorded and paid or converted to leave?
- What minimum rest period applies before the next shift?
- When does the team return to its ordinary schedule?
If you cannot work a scheduled weekend because of a protected accommodation, medical issue, family-related right or religious observance, use the formal process promptly. Do not assume that refusing an unsafe or unlawful schedule is risk-free; obtain advice from a labor authority, union or qualified employment lawyer before escalating a live dispute.
Do you get time off after crunch?
Recovery time is not automatic everywhere. “Comp time” may be a contractual benefit, a collective-agreement term or an unlawful substitute for overtime, depending on the jurisdiction and worker status. Get the arrangement in writing: the number of hours banked, the conversion rate, the deadline for taking leave, who approves dates and what happens to unused hours when employment ends.

In the United States, the FLSA does not require private employers to provide paid vacation, holidays or sick leave, although state law, a contract or a policy may do so. In the EU, at least four weeks of paid annual leave and minimum rest requirements must be implemented through national law. A studio cannot avoid a statutory rest or leave floor simply by calling the period “post-launch recovery.”

Contemporaneous records are more useful than a reconstruction months later. Keep copies somewhere you can lawfully access after leaving the studio, while respecting confidential game material.
- Log start and end times. Record ordinary days, weekends, holidays, overnight sessions and remote work. Note unpaid meal periods only if you actually took them.
- Capture required availability. Save messages that require you to monitor chat, respond to incidents or remain reachable outside scheduled hours.
- Preserve assignments and approvals. Keep release plans, calendar invitations, build schedules and messages directing overtime. Record who gave the instruction and when.
- Track compensation promises. Note promised bonuses, meals, transport, time off or rate changes, including the conditions attached to each promise.
- Record denied rest or leave. Write down requested vacation, sick leave or compensatory time, the response and the dates ultimately worked.
- Keep pay evidence. Retain pay statements, time sheets and classification documents. Do not copy source code, unreleased assets or trade secrets merely to prove hours.
These records do not decide a claim by themselves, but they let an adviser compare the facts with the applicable statute, contract and employer policy.
How to compare studios before accepting a job
Ask for written policies rather than relying on interview assurances. Use the same questions for every offer so that “good culture” claims can be compared with concrete terms.

Should you join a game-worker union?
Organizing is one documented response to low pay, excessive hours and weak individual bargaining power. UNI Global Union reported a 29-country survey in which respondents cited low pay (66%), excessive work hours (43%), inadequate benefits (43%) and discrimination or sexual harassment (35%). Its organizer report describes a game workforce of more than 330,000 across North America, Europe and Asia. Those figures describe the survey and report populations; they are not a measurement of every studio.
A union or collective agreement can negotiate overtime rates, predictable scheduling, minimum rest, layoff procedures, grievance channels and anti-retaliation protections. It may also provide representation when a studio disciplines workers or changes terms. Organizing can involve legal protections and confidential choices that vary by country, so use a local union, labor authority or employment lawyer for the rules where you work.
Before joining or organizing, read the proposed constitution or agreement, dues, bargaining scope, strike rules, membership eligibility and how freelance or contractor roles are treated. Speak with current members about enforcement, not only the promises in campaign materials. If retaliation is threatened, preserve the evidence and obtain prompt local advice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to do when a crunch dispute is happening now
- Stabilize the facts. Continue a contemporaneous hours and instruction log and save pay records.
- Ask for the policy. Request the written overtime, scheduling, rest and time-off rules, plus your classification.
- Raise a specific question. Ask how a named week will be paid or credited and when normal hours resume.
- Use internal channels. Contact human resources, a manager’s manager, a works council or union representative, without deleting earlier messages.
- Escalate externally. For a live dispute, contact the relevant labor authority, game-worker union resource or qualified employment lawyer. State and national deadlines can limit claims.
A worker quoted in Gameworkers.org’s 2023 Rates and Conditions Survey put the production problem plainly: “If there is no way to make a game in 2 years without crunch, then we need to stop trying to make games in 2 years.” The practical question for any studio is whether its schedule, staffing and release promise match the hours it can lawfully and sustainably require.
