Demo carry-over is a title-specific feature set by the publisher and implemented differently on each platform. A game may import your demo save, selected progression, or eligible achievements; another may block transfer entirely. Before buying, check that game’s official FAQ or manual for the exact platform and account requirements.
Keep the demo installed and its save intact until the full release detects it. “Progress carries over” can also mean different things: a save position may transfer while capped experience, demo-only modes, trophies, or cross-platform data do not.

What “carry-over” can mean
When a publisher says a demo transfers to the full game, it is describing a defined data path, not a universal industry standard. The transfer may include the save state and ordinary story progression, or it may cover only a chapter, level, inventory state, or selected unlocks. Treat each of these as a separate question.

- Progression: story chapters, levels, quests, map discoveries, or other ordinary advancement.
- Inventory: items, currency, equipment, or other data stored in the save.
- Limits: experience or progress earned after a demo’s level, chapter, time, or other cap.
- Achievements: trophies or achievements earned in the demo, if the demo supports them at all.
- Platform scope: whether the transfer works only on the same platform, across console generations, or through a cloud service.
A statement such as “your progress can be carried over” therefore does not promise that every statistic, unlock, or achievement will appear in the purchased version.

What usually transfers
Save data and ordinary progression
Square Enix says Octopath Traveler 0 can carry demo save data into the full version when the save remains on the device and the player is signed in to the corresponding first-party account. The full game shows transfer instructions when it detects eligible data. If a full-game save already exists, that message is suppressed, so creating a new save before importing can change what you see.
Save transfer generally means the game resumes from the stored demo state. It does not necessarily mean that every action performed after a demo limit is recorded, or that a save made on one platform can be opened on another.
Multiple save slots
In its Echoes of Aincrad guide, Bandai Namco instructs players to update the main game and then choose “Carry over.” That guide states that all save slots are transferred. This is a useful reminder to check whether a title imports one selected slot or the complete set; the behavior is not uniform across games.
Cloud-assisted transfer on Steam Deck
For the Square Enix example, Steam Deck transfer uses Steam Cloud. Cloud Save Data must be enabled for both the demo and the full game. If the cloud copy is disabled, delayed, or associated with a different account, the full version may not find the expected save even though you played the demo on the same handheld.

What does not transfer automatically
Progress earned after a cap
Square Enix explicitly states that experience earned after reaching a demo’s level cap or progression limit is not stored and will not carry over. In practical terms, reaching the cap does not make later battles or activities permanent data. Spend time on content that the demo can actually record if preserving the most progress matters to you.
Demo-only restrictions and features
The Dinkum FAQ describes a demo limited to one in-game month, one save slot, and no multiplayer or Creative Mode. Purchasing the full game removes those demo restrictions, but that is a change in available features rather than a transfer of progress. A demo can deliberately omit systems that become available only after purchase.
Trophies and achievements
Achievement behavior is title-specific. Square Enix says the relevant demo versions do not contain trophies or achievements. In another Square Enix transfer case, eligible Chapter 1 achievements unlock automatically after the save is imported. You therefore need to ask two separate questions: does the demo expose achievement entries, and does the full game grant credit for what you did?

Cross-platform saves
Bandai Namco’s guidance says, “Data transfer is ONLY possible between the same platform.” That normally rules out moving a save from one console family to another, or from a console to a PC version, unless the publisher documents a specific exception.

Square Enix documents narrow generation moves, such as a PS4 demo to a PS5 full game and a Switch demo to a Switch 2 full game. It says no cross-platform option exists for other platforms in that example. These exceptions should not be generalized to every title released on the same hardware family.
Games that prohibit transfer
Some demos simply cannot be imported. An official Steam-hosted manual states: “Save data cannot be transferred from the demo version to the full version.” If the manual uses that wording, assume the demo is a standalone trial and plan to start again.

How to prepare before buying the full game
- Find the official transfer instructions. Search the game’s support site, FAQ, digital-store description, or manual for “demo save,” “carry over,” or “transfer.” Confirm the exact platform, edition, region, and account requirements.
- Keep the demo save. Do not delete the demo or its saved data while waiting for the full release. Konami says the demo save must be retained; removing it can eliminate the source file the full game needs.
- Stay on the same platform and account. Konami requires the demo and full version to be played on the same platform and with the same account. Bandai Namco likewise limits its documented transfer to the same platform.
- Update the full game. Bandai Namco and Konami both make the latest full-game version a condition of transfer. Install updates before launching the import process.
- Check cloud settings. On Steam or Steam Deck, enable Steam Cloud for both the demo and full game. Wait until synchronization completes before switching devices.
- Record the state of your saves. If the title supports multiple slots, note which ones contain your preferred progress. A game that transfers all slots behaves differently from one that asks you to select one.
- Read the cap rules. Identify level, chapter, time, or other progression limits. Work done after a stated cap may not be stored.
Launching the full game and importing a save
When a prompt appears
Start the full game after updating it and sign in to the account used for the demo. A supported title may display a transfer or confirmation screen. Read the prompt before accepting: it may identify the source save, list slots, or warn that an existing full-game save changes the process.

In the documented Echoes of Aincrad flow, the player selects “Carry over.” Other titles may use different wording, so follow the on-screen label rather than assuming a universal button sequence.
When no prompt appears
First verify that the demo save is still on the device, that the account matches, and that the full game is updated. On Steam Deck, check that both versions have Steam Cloud enabled and that synchronization has completed. In the Square Enix example, an existing full-game save suppresses the transfer message; consult that title’s instructions before deleting anything, because removing a full-game save can erase progress you already made.
After importing
Load the transferred file and inspect the details that matter to you: story position, level, inventory, quests, and available slots. Do not assume that a successful import grants trophies or records actions performed beyond the demo’s cap. The game’s transfer notice or support documentation should define those limits.
Moving between generations and devices
PS4 to PS5
A PS4 demo can move to a PS5 full game only when the publisher specifically supports that route. Square Enix documents this as a supported exception for its title, while stating that other cross-platform transfers are unavailable. The same account and retained save remain essential.
Switch to Switch 2
Square Enix also documents a Switch demo to Switch 2 full-game exception for the supported title. This does not establish a general Switch-family rule. Verify the exact version pairing before deleting data from the older console.
Steam PC to Steam Deck
Steam Deck relies on Steam Cloud in the documented Square Enix process. Enable cloud saves on both the demo and full game, allow the latest local save to upload, and confirm that the Deck has downloaded it before launching the full version. A local backup is sensible when the game permits one.
Console to PC or another platform
Unless the publisher offers a named cross-save system or a documented migration path, assume a console save cannot be opened by the PC version. “Same game” and “same platform” are different requirements.

- The full game starts from the beginning: stop before overwriting the demo data. Confirm the account, platform, update status, and save location; then consult the official transfer steps.
- The transfer option disappeared: check whether a full-game save already exists. The Square Enix example hides the transfer message in that situation. Follow the publisher’s deletion or reset procedure only after backing up anything you need.
- Only some progress appears: compare the imported level, items, and story position with the demo’s documented limits. Experience beyond a cap is expressly excluded in the Square Enix guidance.
- Steam Deck cannot see the save: verify Steam Cloud for both versions, connect to the internet, and wait for synchronization. Do not uninstall while the only copy exists in an unsynchronized local location.
- Achievements are missing: determine whether the demo supported them and whether the full game grants them on import. One title may have none in the demo; another may unlock eligible Chapter 1 achievements automatically.
- A manual says transfer is impossible: treat that as definitive for the title. Do not copy files between platforms or rely on a different game’s behavior.
A quick decision framework
Use these questions before spending time completing a demo:
- Does the official documentation explicitly promise transfer?
- Is your exact platform combination listed, including any generation change?
- Does the transfer include the whole save, selected slots, or only specified progression?
- Are achievements supported and credited?
- What level, chapter, time, or feature limits apply?
- What must remain installed or synchronized until the full launch?
- Could an existing full-game save hide the import prompt?
If any answer is missing, treat the outcome as uncertain rather than assuming your work will carry over. The safest approach is to preserve the demo data, use the same account and platform, update the full release, and follow the game’s own instructions exactly.
