“Game cheats” can mean more than a cheat code or hack. Depending on a game’s rules, the term may include unauthorized software, scripts, bots, macros, exploits, or unfair coordination between players. What is allowed—and what can lead to a ban—depends on the publisher, game, platform, and specific tool.
What counts as cheating in video games?
There is no single definition that applies to every game. Publishers set rules for their own services, and the details matter: a tool’s authorization, what it does, and whether it creates an unfair advantage can all affect whether it is permitted.

Unauthorized software and automation
Riot’s Community Pact identifies scripting, botting, hacks, cheats, and programs that create an unfair advantage as violations of fair play. Electronic Arts’ US PC terms prohibit unauthorized third-party software such as auto or macro tools, hacks, and cheats. These are examples of publisher-specific rules, not a universal legal definition of cheating.
Exploits and competitive manipulation
EA’s US PC terms also prohibit exploiting bugs or glitches to gain an unfair advantage. Riot’s Community Pact covers competitive conduct such as rank manipulation, boosting or “hitchhiking,” and win-trading. Cheating can therefore involve either software or ways of manipulating a competition; it is not limited to changing game files.

Mods, overlays, accessibility tools, and companion apps
A mod or overlay is not automatically permitted or prohibited just because of its category. The relevant questions are whether the game authorizes it, how it interacts with the game, and whether it gives an unfair advantage or violates a specific policy. Riot and EA’s policies establish that authorization and a tool’s effect matter, but do not settle the status of every mod, accessibility tool, or companion app.
Check the current rules for the exact game and platform, and look for publisher guidance on the specific tool. A tool that is allowed in one game—or one platform version—may not be allowed in another.

Can you get banned for using cheats?
Yes. The consequences depend on the publisher’s rules and its assessment of the case. Riot says penalties can reflect the severity of the violation and a player’s history, and may include a suspension across Riot games or a permanent suspension. EA’s US PC terms say EA may terminate a game license or account when it determines that cheating has occurred.
Riot’s stated range includes sanctions that vary by case; it should not be read as a guarantee that every player will receive a warning or temporary suspension before a permanent one. The cited policies do not establish one universal penalty ladder for all games.

How do anti-cheat systems work?
Anti-cheat systems can look for prohibited software or behavior and use their findings to enforce a publisher’s rules. Their methods and access vary. EA’s US PC terms disclose one publisher’s approach; they are not a description of every anti-cheat system.
What EA discloses for US PC games
EA’s US PC terms say anti-cheat technologies may activate when an online-capable game launches and may operate with kernel, administrator, or user privileges. The terms describe collecting or monitoring information from gameplay and device memory, running processes, visuals, communications, or file storage for enforcement. That is substantial technical access, so players concerned about privacy or system access should read the applicable terms for their game and region.

Riot’s announced change to third-party app memory access
In a September 29, 2026 support announcement, Riot said that starting October 6, 2026, it would proactively prevent unknown third-party applications from accessing game memory by default across League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics (TFT), and VALORANT. Riot said known and currently approved tools would have until April 2027 to migrate to official APIs.

Riot’s stated rationale is that game-memory access can be abused to create cheats and bots. The announcement describes Riot’s policy and reasoning; it is not an independent measurement of how often those abuses occur.

What do publisher anti-cheat figures show?
Publishers sometimes report the reach or results of their enforcement systems. The figures below are claims by Electronic Arts, with different scopes and measures. They should not be added together or treated as a measure of cheating across the games industry.

These numbers describe different things: players and sessions reached, attempts blocked, a reported accuracy measure, and accounts banned. A blocked attempt is not necessarily a unique person, and an account ban does not show how many cheaters are currently active. Publisher-reported figures also do not establish how prevalent cheating is across all games. The cited material does not provide an independent, industry-wide prevalence estimate.
How to assess an anti-cheat policy or a tool’s status
If you are deciding whether to use a third-party tool or evaluating an anti-cheat policy, check the details that determine both fairness and system access:

- Enforcement: What penalties can apply, and what does the publisher say about mistaken detections or appeals?
- Evidence: Who reported an effectiveness figure, when, for which games and players, and how was the measure defined?
Riot’s Community Pact puts the fairness principle plainly: “A true win is only accomplished when everyone is playing by the same ruleset.” That principle does not make every publisher’s definition identical; the applicable game policy remains the deciding reference for permitted conduct.
