Start with this troubleshooting order
The sequence below moves from reversible settings to isolation tests. After each change, fold the phone, place it in the situation that normally triggers the light, and observe whether the cover display stays off. Test one change at a time when possible, so you know which action affected the behavior.

- Disable wake gestures: Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures, then turn off Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen (called Double tap to wake on some versions). Samsung identifies both gestures as ways the display can wake. Samsung’s pocket-wake guidance says disabling both is more effective than disabling only one.
- Enable Accidental touch protection: Settings > Display > Accidental touch protection. This keeps the display inactive in dark places such as a pocket or bag, reducing touches caused by contact or movement.
- Check physical pressure: Confirm that nothing is pressing the Side/Power button. Remove a third-party case or cover temporarily and repeat the test.
- Review notifications: If one app’s alerts coincide with the wake-ups, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and inspect that app’s alert and display controls.
- Run a Safe mode test: Safe mode disables downloaded apps. If the waking stops there, an app installed or updated near the time the problem began is a likely contributor.
- Isolate charging: Compare the phone folded and unplugged with the same phone on its charger. Samsung notes that some third-party wireless fast chargers can cause unexpected wake-ups and recommends Samsung-approved charging accessories for optimal performance.
These checks can identify a trigger, but they do not by themselves prove that a particular Fold has a hardware defect.

The outer display can wake for several unrelated reasons. A motion gesture responds when the phone is lifted; a double tap or contact in a pocket can be interpreted as input; a case can press a button; an app can request attention for a notification; and a charging accessory can produce wake events. Treating every wake-up as a screen failure often leads to unnecessary resets or repairs.

On the Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung describes the front screen as turning off by default and explains its normal cover-screen use, but that page does not diagnose repeated waking. Earlier Fold generations document the same wake-gesture controls, while exact availability depends on the model and installed software.
First identify the pattern
Before changing many settings, note when the light appears. A screen that wakes immediately after you pick up the folded phone suggests Lift to wake. A light that appears after the phone is squeezed in a pocket or bag points toward contact, a case, or the Side button. A wake that coincides with a sound or vibration suggests a notification. If it occurs only on a charging pad, the charging setup deserves its own test.
Try to reproduce the event in a controlled order: leave the Fold on a table while folded, carry it without a case, place it in the usual pocket, and then repeat while charging. Record whether the panel merely illuminates or also opens an app, registers taps, or shows a notification. This distinction helps: a brief light with no apparent input may be a normal response to a wake event, while repeated app launches or touch actions point more strongly to contact or button pressure.

These are the first settings to test because they are reversible and do not affect calls, notifications, or the ability to wake the phone with the Side button.
Open the gesture controls
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Motions and gestures.
- Turn off Lift to wake.
- Turn off Double tap to turn on screen. Depending on the Fold generation or software build, the label may be Double tap to wake.
Samsung places these options in this menu in its current Galaxy guidance. If a label is missing, use Settings search for “lift to wake” or “double tap” and check the result shown for your model. Samsung’s European Galaxy Z Fold6 guide also documents both functions, but that does not guarantee identical wording on every Fold.
After changing both options, fold the phone and carry it normally for several minutes. If the cover screen remains dark, motion or tap detection was the trigger. If it still lights, continue rather than re-enabling either gesture immediately; another event is likely involved.
How do I stop my Fold screen waking in my pocket?
Use both gesture controls and pocket protection rather than relying on only one. A pocket can move the phone enough to trigger Lift to wake, while fabric can create a tap. Turn off Lift to wake and double-tap wake first, then enable Accidental touch protection. Carry the Fold in the same pocket for a repeatable test, ideally with the case removed temporarily.

If the display still lights, check whether the Side button faces the inside of the pocket or is being compressed when you sit down. A tight case can make that pressure worse. Changing the phone’s orientation, loosening the pocket, or removing the case for a short comparison can show whether contact is involved, but these observations do not establish a display defect by themselves.
Reduce pocket and bag touches with Accidental touch protection
Accidental touch protection is designed for dark, enclosed places where fabric or another object may touch the display. It can prevent a pocket from registering taps that would otherwise wake the cover screen.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Switch on Accidental touch protection.
Samsung describes the feature as keeping the screen inactive in a pocket or bag. It reduces unintended touches; it is not a promise that the panel can never light briefly when the phone senses motion, contact, or another wake event. If the screen continues to illuminate but no controls are activated, this setting may be working while a different trigger causes the brief wake.
Check the Side button, hinge area and case
A button that is being squeezed can wake the display regardless of gesture settings. A rigid case can create the same pressure when the Fold is closed or when it is packed tightly with other items.
- Press the Side/Power button once and make sure it springs back normally instead of feeling held down.
- Inspect the case opening around the Side button. Look for a tight lip, warped material, debris, or a cover flap that lands on the button when the phone is folded.
- Remove the case and any cover accessory for a controlled test. Carry the bare phone in the same pocket or place it on the same charger.
- If the wake-ups stop without the case, refit it loosely or replace it with one that leaves the button free. The test shows that pressure or contact was involved; it does not establish that the display itself is defective.
Samsung lists accidental button presses and cases around buttons among possible causes of a Galaxy screen turning on automatically. A cover can also change how much fabric touches the outer panel, so test button pressure and pocket contact separately when possible.
Can notifications wake the cover screen?
Yes. Some applications turn on the display to draw attention to an incoming notification. The pattern is usually easy to spot: the screen wakes at the same time as a message, delivery alert, call, calendar reminder, or other app event, even when the phone is stationary.
Find the app responsible
- Open Settings and tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Review apps that have recently alerted, then open the app most closely matching the wake times.
- Use that app’s notification categories and its own in-app notification controls to reduce or disable alerts that do not need to wake the display.
Notification names and category choices vary by app. Change one app at a time, then observe the Fold for a full cycle of the event you normally receive. If the wake-ups continue with notifications disabled for the suspected app, restore its alerts and investigate the next cause instead of disabling every notification.

Use Safe mode to separate apps from built-in behavior
Safe mode starts the phone with downloaded applications disabled. It is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent operating mode.
Enter Safe mode on a recent Galaxy Fold
- Open the power menu, usually by pressing the Side and Volume down buttons together.
- Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode option appears.
- Tap Safe mode and allow the phone to restart.
Button combinations and labels can vary by software version. If this sequence does not produce the option, use the Safe mode instructions shown in your Fold’s support documentation rather than guessing at a reset procedure.
Interpret the result
- No wake-ups in Safe mode: A downloaded app is implicated. Restart normally, then review applications installed or updated around the date the symptom started. Remove or update likely candidates one at a time and retest.
- Wake-ups continue in Safe mode: The cause is less likely to be a downloaded app. Recheck gestures, physical pressure, notifications generated by system services, and charging conditions.
Restart the phone normally to leave Safe mode. Safe mode does not identify which app is responsible; it only narrows the cause to software that is or is not loaded during the test.
Why does it happen only when charging?
If the cover screen stays dark when unplugged but wakes on a charging pad or stand, isolate the charging setup before changing more phone settings. Samsung specifically warns that some third-party wireless fast chargers may cause unexpected wake-ups and advises Samsung-approved chargers for optimal performance.
- Repeat the same folded-phone test while unplugged and note the result.
- Connect the charger with the phone in the same position and observe whether the wake starts.
- If you are using wireless fast charging, test a Samsung-approved charger and cable or a different approved charging arrangement.
- Compare wired charging with wireless charging if both are available. Keep the phone still and remove the case during the comparison so pressure and movement do not confound the result.
A wake-up that occurs only with one charger points to an interaction with that charging accessory. It does not prove that every wireless charger is unsafe or that the Fold’s battery or display has failed.

Fold model and software differences matter
Samsung changes menu wording and feature availability across generations, regions, and One UI versions. The path Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures is the official location for wake gestures in Samsung’s general guidance, but your Fold may use slightly different labels. The Z Fold6 European user guide documents Lift to wake and double-tap wake, while the Fold7 support page focuses on normal cover-screen operation rather than repeated waking.
Do not assume that a setting seen on one Fold generation exists unchanged on another. Check the exact model number and software version under Settings > About phone before comparing menu instructions from another device. If an option is unavailable, use Settings search and apply the closest control offered for that model.

If the cover screen still turns on
Once the six checks are complete, record the conditions instead of repeatedly toggling settings. Note whether the phone was folded, in a pocket or bag, on a wireless pad, connected by cable, inside a case, or receiving a particular notification. Include the Fold model, One UI version, charger type, and whether Safe mode changed the behavior.
- Install any available system update shown under Settings > Software update, then retest under the same conditions.
- Keep the case removed during one longer observation period so button pressure is definitely excluded.
- Use the phone unplugged and with gestures disabled to establish a clean baseline.
- If the display wakes repeatedly in every condition, including Safe mode and without a case or charger, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center for a device assessment.
The material available for this symptom does not identify a single recurring hardware fault or prescribe a particular replacement part. A service assessment is therefore more appropriate than buying a screen protector, repair tool, or replacement component based only on intermittent waking.
