The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra can replace a laptop for supported, mobile-first work—but it is not a laptop running Windows or macOS. Email, web tasks, video calls, documents, handwritten notes and light multitasking may fit well, especially with a keyboard and Samsung DeX. If your work depends on particular desktop apps, plug-ins or workplace systems, check those exact needs before making the tablet your only computer.
Samsung announced the S12 series on September 30, 2026. Its U.S. launch announcement sets the Ultra’s starting price at $1,399.99, with U.S. availability beginning October 7, 2026; those are U.S. launch terms, not a current price or availability guarantee for every market.

What the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra offers that a laptop may not
A large screen with pen input
Samsung specifies a 14.6-inch, 2960 × 1848, 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, and an S Pen comes in the box. That combination lends itself to handwriting, document markup, sketching and touch-first work. A conventional laptop may offer a keyboard-first experience, but its screen is not necessarily as natural for pen-based tasks.

Its launch materials also describe taking notes with the S Pen while viewing a lecture and an AI assistant. These are manufacturer-described capabilities, not independent tests of how well a particular work routine performs.

Tablet portability and media use
Samsung lists the Wi-Fi model at 692g and 5.1mm thick. That is the tablet alone: compare a laptop against the tablet with the keyboard, cover, charger and other gear you actually need, not against the bare tablet.
Samsung specifies an 11,600mAh battery and claims up to 23 hours of video playback. It also says a 45W adapter takes about 95 minutes to fully charge it. The 23-hour figure is a manufacturer video-playback claim, not a mixed-workday result or a comparison with a laptop.
Creative apps, with important limits
Samsung says Photoshop is pre-loaded on the S12 series and includes four months of access to the mobile plan. Samsung’s UK product information also describes Notability and Clip Studio Paint. App availability, included-plan terms and features can vary by region and change over time; confirm that the Android version supports the specific functions you rely on. A mobile app should not be assumed to replace its desktop counterpart.

What you give up compared with a laptop
Windows and macOS software compatibility
The central trade-off is the operating system. Android versions of familiar apps can differ from desktop versions in features, plug-ins, file handling or integration with work systems. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra FAQ says a laptop may still be needed for certain specialized software. Tom’s Guide likewise notes that Android apps and DeX or keyboard limitations can leave some workflows short of a complete laptop replacement.
Before switching, list your indispensable apps and test the Android versions against actual tasks: opening and editing your files, using required add-ons, connecting to workplace services and exporting work in the formats other people need. If an essential tool has no suitable Android version, the tablet is better treated as a companion than a laptop replacement.
Keyboard, pointing and window-heavy work
The Pro Keyboard includes a trackpad; Samsung also offers a Book Cover Keyboard Slim. Both are separately sold accessories on Samsung’s UK listing. A keyboard improves text entry, but adds cost and changes the weight and convenience of the setup. DeX can make supported work feel more desktop-like, but it does not turn Android into Windows or macOS.

How to decide whether it can replace your laptop
Judge the complete setup against your own work, rather than the tablet’s specifications in isolation.
- Check every required app. Confirm that its Android version exists and supports the features, files, plug-ins and sign-in methods you need.
- Match the input to your work. If your day centers on handwriting, reading, drawing and touch, the included S Pen is a practical advantage. If it centers on sustained typing and pointer-driven work, factor in a compatible keyboard and test the workflow in DeX.
- Test the connections and handoffs. Check the file management, peripherals and workplace systems your tasks depend on, not just whether an app opens.
- Compare what you carry. Weigh your actual laptop kit against the tablet with its keyboard, cover, charger and other required accessories. The 692g figure is for the Wi-Fi tablet alone.
- Calculate the full cost. Include the tablet, necessary keyboard and case, connectivity choice and any recurring software subscriptions. Treat launch promotions and included app access as temporary, not permanent savings.
Price, updates and performance claims to interpret carefully
Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement lists a $1,399.99 starting price for the tablet alone and U.S. availability beginning October 7, 2026. It also described a limited-time 30% keyboard discount with device purchase; check current eligibility rather than treating that offer as a standing price. Local pricing, bundles and availability may differ outside the United States.
Samsung’s launch commitment is up to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. The exact terms should be checked for the buyer’s region; the commitment alone does not establish a universal end-of-support date.
Samsung claims up to 61% faster NPU processing, 19% faster CPU performance and 17% improved GPU power compared with the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra. Those are Samsung’s comparisons with its prior tablet, not laptop benchmarks. The available sources do not establish a controlled S12 Ultra-versus-laptop test for specific apps or mixed-use battery life.
