Choose the tracker that fits the phones in your household. Galaxy SmartTag3 is the more flexible option on paper for a mixed Galaxy-and-iPhone household because Samsung lists support for both Android and iOS, although some features require a supported Galaxy device. AirTag (2nd generation) is the natural fit for an Apple-centered household with a supported iPhone or iPad and Apple Account. Neither is a standalone GPS tracker, and there is no manufacturer-supplied head-to-head test establishing which finds items more reliably in everyday use.

Which one fits your phones?
Choose SmartTag3 for a household with Galaxy phones
SmartTag3 is designed to work with Galaxy devices, and Samsung also lists support for iOS devices running iOS 17 or later through SmartThings. That makes it the more flexible choice on paper when a household has both Galaxy and iPhone users. Do not assume every feature works across both platforms: Compass View requires a supported Galaxy device, and Samsung’s stated compatibility still depends on the app and device requirements.

Choose AirTag for an Apple-centered household
AirTag is tied to Apple’s Find My ecosystem and requires an Apple Account plus a supported iPhone or iPad. If the people who will set up and use the tracker already use Apple devices, it is the straightforward choice. Apple’s listed requirements are iOS 26 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 26 or later for iPad. Check Apple’s AirTag support information for current setup and device details.

Samsung’s published iOS compatibility gives SmartTag3 an advantage on paper for mixed-device households, but the evidence does not establish a direct, equivalent experience across Galaxy and iOS. AirTag’s listed setup requires an Apple Account and compatible Apple device. Choose based on who must set up, manage, and locate the item rather than treating either tracker as universally interchangeable.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
How do nearby and out-of-range finding work?
Close by: Bluetooth and directional finding
When your phone is near the tag, Bluetooth can help establish proximity. Supported devices can add directional guidance: SmartTag3 lists Channel Sounding and UWB, while AirTag uses second-generation UWB for Precision Finding. These are different technologies and manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled comparison.
Samsung’s listed SmartTag3 figures are up to 120 m for Bluetooth LE, up to 60 m for Channel Sounding, and up to 20 m for UWB. The 60 m Channel Sounding range is measured line-of-sight; Samsung notes that walls, nearby electronics, and other obstacles can reduce range. These figures are not guaranteed distances inside a home, airport, or crowded street. Apple’s claim that the new AirTag’s Precision Finding reaches from up to 50% farther away refers to the previous AirTag generation, not SmartTag3. Samsung specifications Apple launch details

Far away: crowdsourced network reports
Neither tracker is a standalone GPS device. If you are outside direct Bluetooth range, the tag must be detected by nearby participating devices that can relay a location through its maker’s network. Samsung says reported SmartTag3 location can differ from the tag’s actual location, and update timing depends on nearby devices, settings, network, and regional conditions. Apple describes Find My reports as approximate. A network update is not guaranteed to be live or continuous, and the information provided does not establish which network has better real-world coverage or faster updates.

Samsung says SmartTag3 location data is encrypted and lists a Left Behind Alert. Its launch materials mention pets as well as belongings, but that does not make SmartTag3 a dedicated live GPS pet-tracking service. Bluetooth item trackers depend on nearby phones and network conditions, so they should not be treated as continuous location monitoring.
