Choose the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want Android customization, a built-in S Pen, DeX or Samsung’s multi-camera zoom hardware. Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you prefer iOS, rely on Apple devices and services, or want Apple’s large Pro phone and its variable-aperture main camera. For the current generation, announced in 2026, neither is a universal winner: the operating system and features you will actually use matter more than a spec-sheet tally.
Start with the operating system and devices you already use
The Galaxy S26 Ultra runs Samsung’s Android experience; the iPhone 18 Pro Max runs iOS 27. If your everyday devices, services and shared workflows are already centered on one platform, staying with it is usually the simpler fit. Think about how you share files, messages, photos and subscriptions with the people and devices you use most. A switch can be worthwhile, but it may mean changing familiar apps and habits.

Samsung’s 2026 launch describes the S26 series as an AI-focused Galaxy generation, while Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement emphasizes iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Feature availability for Apple’s intelligence features varies by region and supported language; check what is available where you live before treating any announced AI feature as a deciding factor. Decide whether the S Pen and DeX fit your routine
Galaxy S26 Ultra: stylus and desktop-style workflow
The S Pen is built into the Galaxy S26 Ultra, so it is ready for handwriting, sketching or marking up content without carrying a separate stylus. Samsung DeX offers a desktop-style way to work with the phone. These are useful differentiators if you expect to use them; their presence alone is not a reason to choose Samsung.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: iOS and Apple continuity
Apple’s alternative is the iOS experience and its fit with the rest of your Apple devices and services. If you already rely on that continuity, it may count for more than a feature the Galaxy offers but you would rarely use. Compare your actual routines rather than choosing based on a checklist.
Camera hardware differs; it does not declare a photo winner
Galaxy: multiple rear cameras and zoom options
Samsung lists a 200 MP main camera and multiple rear cameras with optical zoom options for the S26 Ultra. That gives you a range of camera hardware to consider, but megapixels and zoom labels do not establish which phone takes better pictures.

iPhone: variable aperture on the main camera
Apple highlights a 48 MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro models. Variable aperture is a camera feature, not proof that the iPhone outshoots Samsung. The two manufacturers emphasize different hardware approaches. [Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra specifications; Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement]

Both have a nominal 6.9-inch display, but size on paper is not handling
Apple specifies a 6.9-inch OLED display for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Samsung also describes the Galaxy S26 Ultra as 6.9 inches, measured as a full rectangle; rounded corners and the camera opening reduce the usable area. The matching diagonal does not mean the phones feel the same in your hand. If possible, handle each in person and consider whether its width and overall size suit your grip and how you carry it. Battery figures are not a head-to-head test
Samsung lists a typical battery capacity of 5,000 mAh for the S26 Ultra. Apple claims up to 45 hours of video playback for eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max models under Apple’s described test conditions. Capacity and a manufacturer’s playback estimate measure different things, so neither figure establishes which phone lasts longer in everyday use. Look for a recent independent comparison using the same test protocol before choosing on endurance.

Compare the price for your market and configuration
Apple announced a US starting price of $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max in 2026. That is launch pricing, not a guarantee of today’s street price or a price for another country. A same-date, equal-capacity Galaxy S26 Ultra price for your location is not established here, so check current local listings for both phones.

Which one should you get?
- Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if Android customization, an integrated S Pen, DeX or Samsung’s zoom-camera hardware matches how you use a phone.
- Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you prefer iOS, already depend on Apple devices and services, or want its variable-aperture main camera.
- Do not choose on battery or price claims alone without a comparable endurance test and current, like-for-like local prices.
