Yes, the Galaxy S22 Ultra generally takes better 30x photos than the Galaxy S21 Ultra, S20 Ultra and Note20 Ultra—but 30x is not optical zoom. It is a computational, super-resolution image created beyond the phones’ native telephoto reach. The S22 Ultra’s meaningful advantage is its more consistent combination of dedicated 3x and 10x telephoto cameras, autofocus and processing. Its 10x mode is the quality sweet spot; 30x is useful for reach and identification, not fine-detail photography.
What “30x” means on the Galaxy S22 Ultra
The S22 Ultra has separate 3x and 10x optical telephoto cameras. At 30x, the camera app is already enlarging beyond the native 10x optical module, combining telephoto data, digital enlargement, stabilization and computational processing. Samsung describes the system with terms including “Space Zoom,” “Super Resolution Zoom” and AI-enhanced processing; none means that the phone contains a 30x optical lens. Samsung’s official explanation is available on its S22 camera-functions page and in its S22 Ultra announcement.
- 3x: The dedicated 3x telephoto camera’s native optical view.
- 10x: The folded periscope camera’s native optical view.
- 30x: A computational enlargement beyond either native optical setting.
- 100x Space Zoom: Samsung’s maximum selectable magnification, not a 100x optical lens.
At high magnification, the phone may also change cameras. In low light or at certain subject distances, software can use the main camera and crop rather than the nominally appropriate telephoto lens. DXOMARK documented this behavior in its test of an Exynos S22 Ultra; that result should not automatically be generalized to every processor variant or later software version (DXOMARK test).
Telephoto hardware: what changed between generations?
| Phone | Long-range hardware | Advertised maximum | What 30x represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S22 Ultra (2022) | 10MP 3x telephoto and 10MP 10x telephoto | 100x Space Zoom | Computational enlargement beyond the native 10x lens |
| Galaxy S21 Ultra (2021) | 10MP 3x telephoto and 10MP 10x telephoto | 100x Space Zoom | Computational enlargement beyond 10x |
| Galaxy S20 Ultra (2020) | 48MP periscope telephoto with 10x hybrid optical zoom | 100x Space Zoom | Beyond its hybrid/optical range, relying heavily on processing |
| Galaxy Note20 Ultra (2020) | 12MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom | 50x Super Resolution Zoom | Beyond its native 5x optical range |
Samsung’s S22 Ultra specification sheet, S21 Ultra specifications, S20 Ultra camera description and Note20 Ultra camera page document these different designs. The headline maximum numbers therefore cannot be compared as if they described equivalent lenses.

S22 Ultra versus S21 Ultra at 30x
This is the closest comparison because both phones have dedicated 3x and 10x telephoto modules. In independent side-by-side testing, the S22 Ultra usually produces a more convincing 30x frame: distant edges look less artificially sharpened, textures retain more structure and digital artifacts are less obvious. The improvement is most noticeable in difficult light, contrast transitions and fine textures. Digital Trends reported a clear advantage for the S22 Ultra in its camera shootout; DXOMARK also found gains in zoom and low-light performance on the tested Exynos model (test results).
Bright daylight narrows the gap. Both phones can produce usable 30x images when the subject is still, the air is clear and the phone is supported. Neither consistently preserves the detail you would expect from a true optical super-telephoto lens. Tom’s Guide observed watercolor-like smearing and overprocessed detail in S22 Ultra 30x samples even though its 10x images were substantially stronger (review).
Is an S21 Ultra upgrade worthwhile?
- Upgrade for: more consistent processing at 30x, improved behavior in mixed or low light, the integrated S Pen and newer software support relative to the older phone.
- Keep the S21 Ultra for: mostly daylight photography at 3x or 10x, where its near-identical telephoto architecture remains highly capable and a large price gap matters.
The S22 Ultra does not make every scene sharper. Lens selection, shutter speed, stabilization and software version can change the result from one shot to the next.

- The S22 Ultra combines the strengths of the S‑series and the legacy of the Note lineage by including a built‑in S Pen with ultra‑low latency. That means you can write, sketch, annotate PDFs, control media, or even take photos with the pen — essentially turning the phone into a productivity and creativity tool beyond ordinary smartphones.
S22 Ultra versus S20 Ultra at 30x
The S20 Ultra’s 48MP periscope camera and advertised 10x hybrid optical zoom look impressive on paper, but its strategy differs from the S22 Ultra’s dual-telephoto system. Samsung introduced the S20 line’s 100x Space Zoom with a folded lens and hybrid optical/digital processing (launch announcement). At 30x, the S20 Ultra is already stretching beyond its useful native range.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The S22 Ultra uses a lower-resolution 10MP 10x telephoto, but adds a separate 3x camera and newer processing. That combination gives it a more predictable path through 3x, 5x and 10x, then a cleaner starting point for computational magnification. A larger pixel count on the S20 Ultra’s telephoto does not guarantee better 30x output. Early S20 Ultra autofocus and processing limitations also affected consistency, although later updates can change behavior. A Notebookcheck comparison illustrates how the subsequent S21 generation’s added 3x camera and autofocus hardware changed Samsung’s zoom approach.
For an existing S20 Ultra owner, the S22 Ultra is a meaningful upgrade in consistency and intermediate zoom flexibility, especially in challenging conditions. It is not a guarantee of perfectly detailed 30x crops.

S22 Ultra versus Note20 Ultra at 30x
The Note20 Ultra has a 5x optical telephoto and a 50x Super Resolution Zoom ceiling. Its 30x setting is therefore computational, just as the S22 Ultra’s is, but the phones reach that setting through different native focal lengths. The S22 Ultra’s dedicated 3x and 10x cameras cover both common portrait/detail work and distant subjects more directly.
Digital Trends’ S22 Ultra versus Note20 Ultra comparison shows why a 5x optical specification does not automatically produce better 30x photographs. The Note20 Ultra can make attractive daylight images and may preserve contrast or color more pleasingly in a particular scene, while the S22 Ultra generally offers greater range continuity and more dependable long-distance processing. The S22 Ultra is the stronger choice for two dedicated telephoto focal lengths; the Note20 Ultra can still make sense as a substantially cheaper refurbished S Pen phone.

Which phone is strongest at each zoom level?
| Zoom | Practical judgment |
|---|---|
| 1x | Judge main-camera detail, HDR, color and low-light performance separately from telephoto reach; the 30x label says nothing about this view. |
| 3x | The S22 Ultra and S21 Ultra have a dedicated optical module. They hold a clear hardware advantage over the Note20 Ultra’s 5x-oriented system and the S20 Ultra’s older approach for this framing. |
| 5x | Results depend strongly on distance, light and automatic lens switching. It is a transition point rather than a universal winner. |
| 10x | The S22 Ultra and S21 Ultra are at their strongest because this is the native periscope focal length. |
| 20x | Computational processing becomes more conspicuous; support the phone and expect softened fine texture. |
| 30x | The S22 Ultra generally leads the compared predecessors in apparent detail and artifact control, but remains a hybrid/super-resolution mode. |
| 50x/100x | Useful for framing, identification or reading a distant subject when conditions cooperate—not a quality benchmark for optical detail. |
Why 30x samples vary so much
Light and automatic camera switching
Telephoto lenses have narrower apertures than the main camera. In low light, the phone may switch to the brighter main sensor and crop, or produce a noisier telephoto exposure. Two images both labeled 30x can therefore come from different cameras and processing paths.

Motion and stabilization
At 30x, a small hand movement becomes a large framing error, while moving people, animals or leaves can defeat multi-frame processing. A tripod, wall or other stable support can improve results more than a one-generation hardware change.
Texture, haze and distance
Foliage, hair, brick, window grids and distant lettering are prone to watercolor smearing or invented edges. Atmospheric haze and heat shimmer can erase detail before the phone processes the image, regardless of sensor resolution.
Software and regional variants
Launch reviews and later comparisons are not perfectly equivalent because Samsung issued camera updates. Snapdragon and Exynos versions can also behave differently. When comparing samples, record the processor variant, Android and One UI versions, camera-app version, intelligent optimization and scene-optimizer settings, and whether the phone selected the telephoto lens automatically.

How to make a fair comparison
- Use the same scene, lighting, framing and aspect ratio.
- Capture at the same time, with both phones stabilized and focused on the same detail.
- Check whether each phone actually selected a telephoto camera.
- Keep original full-resolution files; screenshots, web compression and resizing can hide or exaggerate differences.
- Compare both the whole frame and a 100% crop, while noting exposure differences that may make one image appear more impressive.
Buying advice for used and refurbished phones
Choose the Galaxy S22 Ultra when
- You regularly shoot between 3x and 10x and want two dedicated telephoto focal lengths.
- You want the strongest overall 30x results among these Samsung predecessors.
- You photograph in mixed light and value improved autofocus and processing.
- You also want an integrated S Pen and a newer support horizon than the 2020 models.
Choose the Galaxy S21 Ultra when
- You want almost the same dual-telephoto hardware at a meaningfully lower used-market cost.
- Your usual shots are 3x or 10x in daylight.
- You do not need an integrated S Pen and can accept more visible processing at 30x.
Choose the Galaxy S20 Ultra when
- You already own one or find a substantially cheaper refurbished example.
- You mostly shoot stationary subjects in good daylight and accept less consistent autofocus.
- You are not treating its 100x specification as proof of superior 30x quality.
Choose the Note20 Ultra when
- You specifically want a Note-style S Pen phone at a bargain refurbished price.
- Your photography is mainly daylight and moderate zoom.
- You can accept one 5x optical telephoto instead of the S22 Ultra’s two dedicated telephoto cameras.
For any 2020–2022 flagship, verify the exact model, storage, processor region, unlocked status, battery-health disclosure, return period and refurbishment warranty. Those factors matter more than a seller repeating “100x” in a listing.
Final verdict: is the S22 Ultra worth buying for 30x?
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the best 30x performer in this four-phone comparison as an overall tendency, with the clearest advantage over the S20 Ultra and Note20 Ultra in consistency and over the S21 Ultra in computational detail and difficult light. The S21 Ultra remains close at its native 3x and 10x settings and may be the better value. Buy the S22 Ultra for its complete 3x–10x telephoto system, processing and S Pen—not because 30x is optical or consistently high-detail. Use 3x and 10x when image quality matters; use 30x when reaching the subject matters more than inspecting every pixel.
