Short answer: Star Wars: Galactic Racer is not simply a modern remake of Star Wars: Episode I: Racer. It includes podracers, but its official vehicle list also covers landspeeders, speeder bikes and skim speeders, alongside a story campaign, Scenario and Arcade modes, and PvP. Episode I: Racer remains the more focused podracing game, built around 25 playable racers, eight worlds, upgradeable racing machines and explicitly supported local multiplayer.
The essential difference
The two games share the Star Wars racing premise, but they aim at different scopes. Star Wars: Episode I: Racer concentrates on the high-speed podracing seen in The Phantom Menace. Its identity comes from choosing a pod, learning a set of alien tracks, using shortcuts and improving performance with pit-droid upgrades.

Star Wars: Galactic Racer treats racing more broadly. Official descriptions list four repulsorcraft categories—landspeeders, speeder bikes, skim speeders and podracers—so podracing is one part of the game rather than its entire format. Its launch materials also describe a runs-based solo campaign, Scenario and Arcade modes, and PvP. That makes it a broader Star Wars racing package on paper, not a one-for-one replacement for the older dedicated podracing structure.

Galactic Racer and Episode I: Racer at a glance
| Comparison point | Star Wars: Galactic Racer | Star Wars: Episode I: Racer |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle focus | Landspeeders, speeder bikes, skim speeders and podracers | Podracers; the game is centered on this single racing concept |
| Solo structure | Story campaign described as a runs-based format: choose events, then regroup after too many crashes | Classic race progression with racer and vehicle improvement features described by Lucasfilm |
| Named modes | Campaign, Scenario and Arcade; official materials also describe PvP | Lucasfilm’s port announcement emphasizes racing, upgrades, shortcuts and multiplayer rather than the newer game’s three-mode structure |
| Playable roster or world count publicly stated | No equivalent racer or world count is stated in the cited official descriptions | 25 playable racers and tracks spanning eight worlds |
| Vehicle upgrades | Specific upgrade systems are not established by the cited material | Pit droids can upgrade speed and acceleration |
| Local multiplayer | Do not assume split-screen from the general PvP description; a specific local format is not established here | Split-screen is explicitly announced for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4; Switch also has LAN multiplayer |
| Launch platforms and date | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; launched 6 October 2026 and was announced as available worldwide | Lucasfilm announced the classic game for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2020 |
The figures in the table are feature counts, not review scores, sales figures or performance measurements. The new game’s platform and launch information comes from the StarWars.com launch announcement and its Steam listing. The classic game’s roster, worlds and multiplayer details come from Lucasfilm’s Switch and PS4 announcement.
What Galactic Racer adds beyond dedicated podracing
Four kinds of repulsorcraft
The clearest distinction is the vehicle roster. Galactic Racer’s official descriptions name landspeeders, speeder bikes, skim speeders and podracers. A player interested in the Star Wars racing idea but not only the twin-engine pods from Episode I therefore has more vehicle categories to consider.
Podracers are still present, so the game can answer the question “Can you race podracers in Galactic Racer?” with yes. The important qualification is that the game is not presented as a podracing-only title. The other three classes are part of its advertised identity, and the available material does not establish that every class uses identical handling, event rules or upgrade paths.

A runs-based story campaign
The launch announcement describes a solo campaign built around runs. Players choose events, continue through a sequence of racing situations and regroup after too many crashes. That wording points to a more structured, attempt-based campaign than a simple list of tracks, although the cited sources do not specify the exact crash threshold, run length, branching rules or persistence between attempts.
That campaign structure is a major conceptual difference from the way Lucasfilm presents Episode I: Racer. The classic game is documented through its racers, worlds, upgrades, shortcuts and multiplayer features; Galactic Racer is additionally framed as a narrative or run-based journey. Readers who want a solo progression layer should therefore look first at Galactic Racer’s campaign description, while readers who primarily want to select a racer and master a dedicated set of pod tracks may find the classic format more directly aligned with that goal.
Scenario and Arcade modes
Galactic Racer’s launch materials list Campaign, Scenario and Arcade modes. The names establish three separate mode categories, but the available descriptions do not define every rule in each one. It would be inaccurate to invent details such as a particular time-attack format, event count or scoring system.
What can be said confidently is that the new game is advertised as more than a single campaign. Scenario and Arcade give it additional named structures alongside the story mode, and the official store material also identifies PvP or multiplayer. That breadth is part of the distinction from the classic game’s more tightly defined podracing presentation.

PvP without an established split-screen promise
Galactic Racer’s official materials describe PvP and multiplayer. They do not, in the cited sources, specify whether that means online-only competition, a particular player count, couch multiplayer, split-screen, or a combination of formats. Do not treat the word “PvP” as proof of local split-screen.
If local multiplayer is your deciding factor, verify the exact mode on the platform storefront or an up-to-date official support page before buying. The documented evidence supports multiplayer in general, not a specific local arrangement.
What Episode I: Racer does best as a focused game
A roster built around podracing
Episode I: Racer is the purer answer to the question “Which Star Wars game is about podracing?” Lucasfilm’s announcement lists 25 playable racers. The cast and machines are presented within the same pod-racing framework rather than being divided among multiple vehicle families.
That narrower focus can matter more than raw feature count. Someone looking for the distinctive fantasy of a pilot strapped to a pod, balancing speed and control through long alien courses, does not need to learn several unrelated vehicle categories. Every major choice stays inside the podracing theme.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Eight worlds and track variety within that format
The same announcement says the game includes tracks spanning eight worlds. This is a documented world count, not a claim about the number of individual circuits, laps or race events. It does establish a broad setting range while keeping the underlying vehicle type consistent.
Galactic Racer may offer more vehicle variety, but the cited material does not provide a directly comparable number of worlds or tracks. A fair comparison therefore treats “eight worlds” as a confirmed Episode I figure, not evidence that the older game has more total content.
Pit-droid upgrades for speed and acceleration
Episode I: Racer includes pit-droid upgrades for speed and acceleration. Those named upgrade categories give progression a concrete mechanical focus: improving how quickly a pod travels and how rapidly it builds pace.

The sources do not state the number of upgrade levels, the cost of each improvement, whether every racer shares the same limits or how upgrades affect handling. The reliable conclusion is simply that pit droids are part of the classic game’s progression and that speed and acceleration are explicitly upgradeable.

Lucasfilm also calls out shortcuts. That means learning a course is not only about following its obvious route; route selection is part of the documented design. The announcement does not enumerate the shortcuts or describe their risk and reward, so no precise shortcut strategy can be inferred from it.
Explicitly documented local multiplayer
The strongest multiplayer distinction belongs to the classic game’s ports. Lucasfilm states that split-screen multiplayer is available on both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, with LAN multiplayer additionally available on Switch. This is the clearest documented choice for players who want to race friends on the same display or, on Switch, over a local network.
That evidence should not be transferred to Galactic Racer by assumption. The new game’s sources confirm PvP or multiplayer but do not establish split-screen or LAN support.
Head-to-head comparison by the questions readers actually ask
Is Galactic Racer essentially Episode I: Racer with newer graphics?
No. The documented feature sets overlap around Star Wars racing and podracers, but Galactic Racer expands the vehicle concept to four listed repulsorcraft classes and adds a campaign, Scenario and Arcade modes, and PvP. Episode I: Racer remains a dedicated podracing game with 25 racers, eight worlds, pit-droid upgrades and shortcuts.
Calling Galactic Racer a broader successor or alternative is reasonable as an inference from those features. Calling it a remake, remaster or direct replacement is not supported by the cited material.
Which game is specifically about podracing?
Episode I: Racer is the more focused choice because its entire documented format is built around podracers. Galactic Racer also lets players race podracers, but its official vehicle list includes three other classes.

- 5 types of racing, off-road sprint, off-road track, mountain climbing, obstacle course, closed circuit

Which game offers more vehicle variety?
Galactic Racer, based on the published lists, offers more vehicle-type variety: landspeeders, speeder bikes, skim speeders and podracers. Episode I: Racer’s documented identity is a single vehicle category, with variety coming from its 25 playable racers and the worlds and tracks they race across.
Which game has the clearer solo campaign?
Galactic Racer has the clearer campaign claim. Its launch materials explicitly name a story campaign and describe it as a runs-based solo structure in which players select events and regroup after too many crashes. Episode I: Racer is documented with races, upgrades and shortcuts, but the cited announcement does not describe an equivalent runs-based story system.

Episode I: Racer has the explicit split-screen specification: Lucasfilm announced it for both Switch and PS4, plus LAN multiplayer on Switch. Galactic Racer is described as having PvP or multiplayer, but the supplied official descriptions do not confirm split-screen. If two people must play on one screen, Episode I: Racer has the clearer documented answer.
Which game has the newer platform support?
Galactic Racer launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on 6 October 2026. The launch announcement says it is available worldwide as of 13 October 2026. Episode I: Racer’s cited modern release announcement covers Nintendo Switch and PS4.
These are not interchangeable platform lists. A PS5, Xbox Series console or PC owner should first check Galactic Racer; a Switch owner looking for the announced classic port should check Episode I: Racer. The historical Switch and PS4 announcement does not verify current retailer stock, and the Galactic Racer launch announcement does not establish current regional pricing.

Physical Standard and Deluxe editions of Galactic Racer are described for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A Collector’s Edition is also described as bundling the digital Deluxe content with a metal Kor Sarun: Darc X landspeeder model, a banner, character patches, a printed 80-page art book and a steel case. These edition details are listed on the game’s official site in its pre-order announcement.

The cited Episode I: Racer material concerns the Switch and PS4 release and its features; it does not provide a directly comparable Collector’s Edition specification. No price comparison is possible from the documented information.

How to choose between them
Choose Episode I: Racer if your priority is classic podracing
- You want the game’s entire vehicle identity centered on podracers.
- You value a documented roster of 25 playable racers.
- You want tracks across eight named worlds.
- You like progression built around pit-droid upgrades to speed and acceleration.
- You need explicitly announced split-screen on Switch or PS4.
- You want shortcuts to be part of learning and replaying courses.
Choose Galactic Racer if your priority is a broader Star Wars racing format
- You want to switch among landspeeders, speeder bikes, skim speeders and podracers.
- You want a named story campaign rather than only the classic race-and-upgrade framing.
- You are interested in a runs-based solo structure with event choices and regrouping after too many crashes.
- You want Campaign, Scenario and Arcade modes in one package.
- You want the newer release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC.
- You are looking for PvP or multiplayer, while checking the platform’s exact local and online options separately.
Choose based on your friends’ setup
For same-screen play, the evidence favors Episode I: Racer because split-screen is explicitly stated for Switch and PS4. For Galactic Racer, confirm the exact multiplayer implementation before purchase; “PvP” alone does not answer whether friends can share one screen.
Choose based on how much certainty you need
Episode I: Racer has a more fully enumerated public feature set in the cited announcement: racer count, world count, upgrades, shortcuts and local multiplayer. Galactic Racer’s public materials establish broader categories and modes but leave details such as class-specific handling, exact campaign rules, player counts and local multiplayer format unspecified. If those particulars determine your purchase, wait for platform-specific documentation rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
Availability as of October 2026
As of 13 October 2026, the launch announcement says Star Wars: Galactic Racer is available worldwide. It launched on 6 October 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The announcement and Steam page are the relevant references for those launch platforms: StarWars.com’s availability announcement and the Steam product page.
Star Wars: Episode I: Racer was announced for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 with modernized controls. That announcement is historical platform information, not a guarantee that every retailer still has stock or that every digital listing remains available in every country.
What the available evidence cannot settle
Neither game can be declared the faster, smoother or better-handling racer from the cited information. No controlled tests are supplied for frame rate, resolution, loading time, steering response, difficulty, crash behavior or input latency.
Likewise, the documented vehicle lists do not prove that Galactic Racer’s four classes have different physics, and Episode I: Racer’s upgrade description does not reveal a complete tuning system. The campaign description does not specify Galactic Racer’s exact branching, event count or persistence rules. Those are hands-on or technical questions that require separate evidence.
The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: Galactic Racer is the newer, broader repulsorcraft racer with a documented campaign and multiple modes, while Episode I: Racer is the more concentrated podracing game with a defined 25-racer, eight-world framework, pit-droid upgrades, shortcuts and explicitly announced split-screen. Which one fits depends on whether you want breadth and a newer platform release or the classic podracing concept and clearly documented local multiplayer.
