Fyreslayers vs. Disciples of Tzeentch: Which Age of Sigmar Army Fits Your Playstyle?

Choose Fyreslayers if you want an aggressive, close-combat army built around runes, prayers and carefully timed bursts of power. Choose Disciples of Tzeentch if you prefer a magic-led force that spends fate points, combines spells and changes where threats appear on the battlefield.

This is a playstyle choice, not a claim that either faction is stronger, cheaper or easier. There is also an important 2026 qualification: Games Workshop announced on October 9 that Fyreslayers are being folded into the forthcoming Battletome: Khazalite Holds, with several existing units moving to Warhammer Legends after a transition period. Check the release and event rules before buying or building around a specific Fyreslayers unit.

Question Fyreslayers Disciples of Tzeentch
Core feel Direct, aggressive combat supported by runes, prayers and durable warrior units. Spell-led play with fate-point decisions, layered abilities and board manipulation.
Your main question each turn When should I commit, trigger a rune or prayer, and protect the unit that is about to fight? Which spell, fate-point spend, reserve move or positioning trick creates the best sequence?
Best fit for Players who want to move toward the enemy and make decisive melee attacks. Players who enjoy planning combinations and making the opponent respond to unexpected threats.
Current caution The Khazalite Holds transition will remove Vulkite Berzerkers and several other entries from the regular roster for the announced move to Legends. The current battletome has already received post-release adjustments, so points and tournament details must be checked in the latest official update.

These descriptions summarize the mechanics Games Workshop has published. They are not a win-rate ranking or a formal difficulty rating.

What playing Fyreslayers feels like

Runes make timing more important than raw aggression

Fyreslayers are duardin warrior-cults that channel their god’s power through ur-gold runes. Their faction identity is straightforward: get close, survive the approach, then hit with enough temporary power to decide the combat.

The 2024 faction overview describes several kinds of rune effect. A rune can support an aggressive move toward an objective, increase combat impact, add defensive protection through a ward, or extend the army’s reach with throwing axes. The important decision is not simply whether an effect is useful; it is whether this is the turn when spending it changes the game.

A movement rune used too early may leave your best unit exposed before the opponent can be charged. A defensive effect saved too long may never matter because the unit has already lost the position it needed. Fyreslayers therefore reward players who can read the next combat rather than react only to the current one.

Prayers and the Auric Runemaster add another timing layer

Prayers give the army another way to shape a turn, while the Auric Runemaster can build tokens that enhance rune effects. That creates a compact resource-management loop: establish the position, generate or preserve the resource, then amplify the effect when a key attack or defense is about to happen.

This does not make Fyreslayers a passive army. Their tools are most valuable when attached to an active plan such as claiming an objective, forcing a charge, or keeping a valuable Hearthguard unit alive through the opponent’s response. If you enjoy making one or two high-impact decisions each round, this structure is likely to feel satisfying.

The army’s combat identity is changing in 2026

On October 9, 2026, Games Workshop announced that Battletome: Khazalite Holds will incorporate Fyreslayers into a broader duardin force. The announcement says an army can still be composed entirely of Fyreslayers through selected units or the Fyrd of Fyrepeak Army of Renown, but it also signals a more elite direction.

The announced transition moves the following entries to Warhammer Legends:

Games Workshop identifies Hearthguard, Flameseekers, Magmadroths and characters as the core of the remaining Fyreslayers contingent. Vulkite Berzerkers and the other listed entries remain usable in competitive events for one year after the new book releases, according to the announcement. Because the release date and preorder details were still forthcoming, treat that one-year window as beginning only when the new book actually releases.

The practical consequence is significant. A player starting now should not assume that a classic Vulkite-heavy collection will remain the normal route into the faction. Verify the final book, warscrolls and event policy before purchasing a large force.

Games Workshop studio contributor John described the intended identity as “doughty duardin who hurl themselves across the battlefield, blazing with power and drinking deep of their god’s divinity at the right moment to carry them to a confident victory.”

What playing Disciples of Tzeentch feels like

Magic is the army’s operating system

Disciples of Tzeentch are built for players who want their turn to be a sequence of interacting effects. The current battletome feature discusses two spell lores, fate points and abilities that affect movement, targeting and deployment. Instead of relying on one obvious charge, you often create a threat by combining several smaller advantages.

That can mean using a spell to alter a unit’s position, applying a debuff before another unit attacks, and spending a fate point to make the crucial spell or charge more reliable. The army’s appeal comes from having several plausible lines of play and choosing the one that best exploits the opponent’s formation.

Fate points reward adaptation

The Games Workshop feature says fate points can be generated by events such as losing a priority roll, having a spell unbound or miscast, or losing an objective. They can then be spent to improve a spell or charge or to reduce incoming damage.

This creates an unusual rhythm. A setback is not automatically wasted; it can become fuel for a later turn. The challenge is deciding whether to spend immediately for survival or hold the resource for a spell, charge or defensive swing that matters more. Players who dislike tracking conditional resources may find this distracting, while players who enjoy turning bad rolls into a plan will have more to work with.

Positioning tricks make the opponent respect more of the table

The feature describes repositionable Argent Shards, reserve interactions and illusion effects that allow Tzeentch units to shift threats around the battlefield. These tools can make an opponent screen more angles, protect vulnerable units and reconsider where an objective is actually safe.

Board control here is not only about occupying space. It is about forcing the opponent to spend movement and defensive resources because a unit might appear from reserve, move through a magical effect or become difficult to target. The payoff is greatest when you can plan several turns ahead and preserve the pieces needed for the final combination.

An example spell, with a date-sensitive warning

The faction feature reproduces Bolt of Tzeentch with a casting value of 7, a visible enemy target within 18 inches, D3 mortal damage and a penalty of 1 to the target’s wound rolls until the start of the caster’s next turn. This is an example quoted in that feature, not a guarantee that the wording, range or effect remains unchanged after later updates. Use the current battletome, faction pack and errata when playing.

Ryan from Threshold Tactics characterizes the faction’s attitude with the line “It’s all part of the plan.” It is an enthusiast’s phrase, but it captures the attraction of a force that turns setbacks and positioning puzzles into resources.

Which army is more complex?

Neither faction has a published learning-time score, and the available official material does not establish one as objectively easier. Their complexity comes from different places.

Type of decision Fyreslayers Disciples of Tzeentch
Resource timing Choose when to trigger runes, prayers and rune-enhancing tokens. Generate and spend fate points while deciding which spell or charge deserves help.
Positioning Move into reliable charge and objective positions while protecting the frontline. Coordinate reserves, repositioning effects, targeting restrictions and threat angles.
Combat planning Set up a decisive melee turn and preserve the unit that must survive the counterattack. Sequence spells, debuffs and attacks so each effect improves the next one.
Typical mistake Using a key rune before the opponent’s response is clear, or committing without enough protection. Spending fate points on a modest improvement and then lacking them for the decisive spell, charge or defense.

Fyreslayers may feel more intuitive if you prefer a visible frontline and a small number of high-impact triggers. Tzeentch may feel more natural if you enjoy planning several interactions and accepting that the best move can involve retreating, reserving or delaying a threat.

Choose Fyreslayers if these statements sound like you

  • You want your army’s main story to happen in melee rather than in a long spell sequence.
  • You enjoy timing buffs and protection around one important charge or combat.
  • You prefer a clear battlefield job: advance, contest, survive and hit back.
  • You like the visual and narrative identity of duardin warrior-cults, ur-gold, Hearthguard and Magmadroths.
  • You are comfortable checking the Khazalite Holds transition before committing to older units.

Do not choose Fyreslayers solely because they look simple on paper. Their strongest turns depend on recognizing when a rune, prayer or defensive effect changes the outcome. The army rewards decisiveness, but careless timing can leave an expensive unit unsupported.

Choose Disciples of Tzeentch if these statements sound like you

  • You want magic to be central to nearly every turn.
  • You enjoy tracking a resource and deciding whether to spend it now or preserve it for a bigger sequence.
  • You like reserve, repositioning and illusion effects that make deployment part of the battle plan.
  • You are happy to learn interactions between spells, unit abilities and targeting rules.
  • You enjoy winning by creating problems the opponent must answer, even before a charge happens.

Tzeentch is not simply “the ranged army” or a guarantee of control. Its value depends on successful spellcasting, legal targets, careful sequencing and enough board presence to exploit the openings your magic creates.

The 2026 Fyreslayers transition: what a buyer should verify

The Khazalite Holds announcement is the most important current collection issue for Fyreslayers. The book was described as imminent on October 9, 2026, but the announcement did not confirm a later release date, final contents or preorder schedule.

  1. Check the actual release date. Do not treat “imminent” as “available.” Confirm that the battletome and any replacement warscrolls have been released.
  2. Read the final unit list. Confirm which Fyreslayers entries remain in the regular faction, which are available through the Fyrd of Fyrepeak Army of Renown, and which are Legends.
  3. Check your event’s policy. The announcement gives a one-year competitive-use period for the departing units after release, but individual events can publish their own eligibility rules.
  4. Buy around the confirmed core. Hearthguard, Flameseekers, Magmadroths and characters are the announced direction; wait for final rules if you are making a large purchase.
  5. Protect existing models. A move to Legends does not make painted models unusable in every setting. It changes where and how they are supported, so casual games and event games may differ.

How current Tzeentch rules should be checked

Games Workshop announced an April 2026 update that made tweaks after feedback on the new Tzeentch battletome. That means an article, video or printed list that was accurate at release may no longer describe the current values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the latest official faction pack and battletome errata for rules wording.
  • Use the current Battlescroll for points and balance changes.
  • Recheck spell ranges, casting values, reserve restrictions and fate-point effects before building a tournament list.
  • Do not use the Bolt of Tzeentch example above as a substitute for the current warscroll or spell lore.

Quarterly balance updates can change the practical value of a unit without changing the faction’s broad identity. The stable comparison is therefore “melee timing versus magic and manipulation,” not a permanent claim about which army scores more wins.

Start with Spearhead before committing to a full army

Spearhead is the lowest-commitment way to test whether the army’s decisions are enjoyable. Games Workshop describes it as a smaller, self-contained format using an existing box of miniatures, dedicated rules and a smaller board. It is designed to let players play a complete game without first assembling a full matched-play collection.

The official Age of Sigmar app announcement says the app includes faction packs, warscrolls, Spearhead rules and Storm Forge for experimenting with army lists. Availability and contents can change, so check the current app listing and in-app documents.

A practical trial sequence

  1. Play the box rules as written. Do not begin by importing a full-sized matched-play list. Learn whether you enjoy the army’s basic turn structure.
  2. Track your decisions. After each game, note whether your biggest mistake involved a charge, a rune or prayer, a spell, a fate-point spend or deployment.
  3. Try the opposite faction. A single game against the other army reveals whether you prefer creating threats or answering them.
  4. Only then expand. Use the current warscrolls, points and event pack when moving beyond Spearhead.

A first-game plan for each faction

Fyreslayers

  1. Identify the unit that must reach the central fight and the unit that must survive the opponent’s response.
  2. Move for a charge or objective while keeping enough support nearby to make the engagement worthwhile.
  3. Reserve your strongest rune or prayer effect for the turn in which it changes damage, survival or objective control.
  4. After the first combat, reassess rather than automatically charging again. A damaged unit may need protection or a fallback position.

Disciples of Tzeentch

  1. Mark the spells and abilities that require visible targets, specific ranges or a particular battlefield position.
  2. Decide which unit benefits most from reserve or repositioning effects before deployment, not after the opportunity has passed.
  3. Keep a record of how fate points are generated in your game and avoid spending them merely because they are available.
  4. Sequence spells and attacks so that a debuff, movement effect or damage spell improves a later action.
  5. Leave yourself a legal fallback if a spell is unbound, miscasts or loses its target.

What is not established

No named, dated source in the available official material establishes a comparative win rate, army cost, collection size, learning time or permanent tournament ranking for these factions. Prices and stock also vary by region and date. A claim that one army is objectively cheaper, easier or stronger would go beyond the evidence.

The reliable distinction is play pattern: Fyreslayers concentrate on close combat, runes, prayers and timing; Disciples of Tzeentch concentrate on spells, fate points, deployment manipulation and combinations. Points, unit efficiency and event legality remain moving targets.

Final decision

Pick Fyreslayers when the satisfying moment is a protected warrior unit crossing the table, triggering the right rune and winning a decisive melee. Pick Disciples of Tzeentch when the satisfying moment is assembling several magical effects, spending a resource at exactly the right time and making the opponent defend against threats from places they thought were safe.

If you are undecided, play a Spearhead game with each. For Fyreslayers, ask whether you enjoyed choosing the moment to commit. For Tzeentch, ask whether you enjoyed planning and revising a chain of effects. The answer to those questions is a better guide than an old tier list, a release-day points value or someone else’s definition of an easy army.
