Fuzzy-Adaptive MPPT, Kalman SOC Estimation and Lyapunov-Stable Predictive Control for Solar EV Charging Stations

The architecture combines three different control jobs: fuzzy-adaptive maximum-power-point tracking (MPPT) extracts as much available energy as the photovoltaic array can deliver, a Kalman-family estimator infers battery state of charge (SOC) from a model and noisy measurements, and predictive energy management (EMS) decides how PV, stationary storage, the grid and EV loads should share power. Lyapunov analysis can show that the mathematical closed loop remains bounded or converges under stated assumptions. It does not, by itself, prove safe thermal operation, electromagnetic compatibility, cybersecurity or field reliability. Most published results for closely related systems are simulations; figures attributed specifically to this exact title remain provisional until its primary publisher record is verified.

What the control stack is designed to do

A solar-integrated charging station has several competing objectives. PV output changes with irradiance and temperature, EV demand can jump when vehicles connect, and a stationary battery must stay within current, voltage and SOC limits. The grid can cover shortages, but importing less power may be an operating objective. Treating all of these decisions as one loop often makes the controller either too slow for the converter or too short-sighted for station scheduling.

Layer Primary question Typical controlled variable What it does not decide
PV MPPT Where should the PV converter operate to extract available array power? Boost-converter duty ratio or PV operating voltage Whether PV power goes to an EV, the battery or the grid
Battery SOC estimator How much usable charge is actually in the battery? Estimated SOC and model states How much power the station should request
Predictive EMS How should power be allocated over a forecast horizon? Battery power, grid exchange and EV charging commands Instantaneous switching details inside the converter
Lyapunov analysis Do modeled errors remain bounded or decrease? A mathematical stability certificate Proof of hardware safety or performance under unmodeled faults

Keeping MPPT and EMS distinct is important: an MPPT loop can maximize instantaneous PV extraction while an EMS intentionally curtails PV or charges the battery at a lower rate to respect SOC, thermal or grid constraints.

How fuzzy-adaptive MPPT responds to changing sunlight

Conventional perturb-and-observe (P&O) MPPT perturbs the operating point and observes whether power rises or falls. It is simple, but it can oscillate around the maximum and may react poorly when irradiance changes at the same time as the perturbation. Incremental-conductance methods use the slope of the PV power-voltage curve and can respond more directly, but still require thresholds and filtering.

A fuzzy-adaptive controller uses measured PV voltage and current to calculate power and a slope or error signal. Fuzzy rules then change the perturbation step or duty-cycle correction: large errors produce a larger move toward the maximum, while a near-zero error produces a small correction to reduce steady-state oscillation. The rules can also react differently when the power change is caused by irradiance movement rather than by the controller’s own perturbation. Under partial shading, the algorithm must search for a global, rather than merely local, maximum; the quality of that search depends on the rule base and supervisory logic.

Results reported by related studies

Study and system Reported result Validation level
Energy Reports (2026), EV battery-charging simulation Fuzzy MPPT produced 201.4 W at steady state versus 183.5 W for conventional P&O, reported as 9.8% higher in that test. Simulation; the operating conditions and rating are those of the study’s test case.
Scientific Reports (2026), 10 kW bifacial PV EV system with hierarchical EMS Adaptive fuzzy MPPT reported 80.9% tracking efficiency under partial shading, 4.5 percentage points above P&O, with 2.40% THD. Simulation results reported for the modeled system.
Scientific African (2025), 5 kW solar charging station An ANN–Kalman MPPT combined with MPC reported a 99.93% reduction in tracking time and 0.56% THD. Inverter simulation; the tracking-time definition is study-specific.

These numbers are not a head-to-head benchmark. They use different PV ratings, shading patterns, converters, definitions and baselines. A higher tracking percentage in one model cannot be transferred directly to another station.

What the Kalman SOC estimator contributes

SOC is not measured directly. Coulomb counting integrates battery current, but sensor bias and an incorrect initial SOC accumulate over time. Open-circuit-voltage lookup can correct drift when the battery is relaxed, yet EV stations rarely remain at equilibrium long enough for that method alone.

A Kalman-family estimator combines a battery model with measured current, terminal voltage and, where available, temperature. In the prediction step it propagates SOC and internal states using the applied current. In the correction step it compares predicted voltage with the measured voltage and weights the correction according to model and sensor uncertainty. Extended, unscented or other nonlinear variants are used when the battery model is not linear.

Where accuracy comes from—and where it can fail

  • Model quality: resistance, capacity and polarization parameters must represent the cell chemistry, temperature and aging state.
  • Sensor quality: current offset, voltage noise and sampling delays directly affect the estimate.
  • Operating regime: rapid power changes, low temperatures and long periods near full or empty can expose model errors.
  • Initialization: an incorrect starting SOC may require a convergence period before the estimate is trustworthy.
  • Computation: covariance updates and nonlinear models require more processing than plain coulomb counting.

The estimator should therefore expose confidence or innovation residuals to the EMS. A large, persistent residual is a reason to limit battery power or trigger recalibration rather than silently trusting the SOC value.

How predictive energy management coordinates the station

Predictive EMS uses forecasts of PV production, EV demand and sometimes electricity price or grid limits over a finite horizon. At each control update it solves an optimization, applies only the first set of commands, measures the new state and solves again. This receding-horizon approach lets the station charge from imminent PV, discharge storage for an arriving EV, or reserve battery headroom for a forecast cloud event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Constraints the optimization should include

  • Battery SOC, charge and discharge power, current and ramp limits.
  • PV-converter and DC-bus voltage limits.
  • EV charging power, connector availability and requested energy.
  • Maximum grid import or export and any site demand limit.
  • Minimum reserve SOC and battery-aging or cycle-cost penalties.

In a related ANN EMS study, the modeled station had approximately 30 kW of EV charging demand, PV, a standby battery and grid exchange; the source describes a modeled system rather than a field deployment. The study is available at Discover Environment (2026).

Why prediction is useful

A purely reactive rule may discharge the battery for a vehicle that could have waited for a near-term PV increase, or import from the grid just before a cloud passes. Predictive control can trade immediate charging against future demand while keeping the battery inside its feasible region. The trade-off is computational load and dependence on forecast and model accuracy. If the optimization becomes infeasible, the implementation needs a fallback priority order, such as protecting battery limits first, maintaining the DC bus, then serving EV demand and finally optimizing grid exchange.

What Lyapunov stability proves

A Lyapunov proof selects a positive-definite function of tracking, SOC or bus-voltage errors, often interpreted as an energy-like quantity. If the controller makes its time derivative non-positive, the modeled errors remain bounded; if it is strictly negative outside the desired equilibrium, the errors can converge under the theorem’s assumptions. For a predictive controller, the proof may also show recursive feasibility or boundedness of the closed-loop state.

The guarantee is conditional. It normally assumes an accurate plant model, bounded disturbances, valid measurements, actuator authority and constraints represented in the equations. It does not test insulation, connector heating, electromagnetic interference, communications loss, cyberattacks, contactor faults, battery aging or a badly calibrated sensor. Those require separate verification, protection design and hardware testing.

What is actually validated, and what remains provisional

Evidence What can be concluded What cannot be concluded
Fuzzy MPPT and MPC studies linked above The algorithms can improve modeled tracking, distortion or response metrics under their stated test conditions. That the same gains will occur on every array, converter or battery.
Kalman-based SOC simulations Model-based correction can reduce dependence on raw current integration in simulation. Accurate SOC under all temperatures, chemistries and aging conditions without calibration.
Lyapunov analysis Mathematical boundedness or convergence for the defined model and assumptions. End-to-end field safety, reliability or efficiency.
Exact-title claims in a secondary report dated 18 October 2026 The report attributes the figures in the next table to the named framework. Independent confirmation: the primary publisher page and DOI metadata were not verified here.

Figures attributed to the exact title

A secondary article at News Minimalist (18 October 2026) attributes the following values to the exact title. They should be treated as provisional, not as independently validated performance:

Metric Attributed value Status
MPPT tracking efficiency 98.1% Secondary attribution; primary record unverified
SOC error Reduced from 2.45% to 0.118% Secondary attribution; test conditions not independently confirmed
Operating cost 6.8% reduction Secondary attribution; tariff and baseline not independently confirmed
Overall system efficiency 93.6% Secondary attribution; system boundary not independently confirmed
Grid dependency 14.2% Secondary attribution; definition and horizon not independently confirmed
ESP8266 hardware efficiency 91.2% Secondary attribution; hardware test details not independently confirmed

How to implement and verify the architecture

  1. Define the power-flow boundary. Record PV rating, converter topology, battery chemistry, EVSE limits, grid interface and sensor locations.
  2. Identify and validate the battery model. Fit parameters over the temperatures and SOC range the station will encounter, then test the model against separate current-voltage traces.
  3. Build MPPT protections before optimization. Enforce voltage, current, duty-cycle, over-temperature and sensor-fault limits independently of the fuzzy rule base.
  4. Calibrate the SOC estimator. Establish current-sensor offset, voltage accuracy, initialization behavior and residual thresholds; test aged and temperature-varied cells.
  5. Formulate the EMS objective and constraints. State priorities explicitly: EV service, battery reserve, grid limits, PV curtailment, operating cost and degradation.
  6. Prove the claimed stability properties. List every assumption in the Lyapunov argument and check that saturation, sampling and forecast errors are represented.
  7. Run staged validation. Compare P&O, incremental conductance and fuzzy MPPT on identical irradiance traces; then test SOC and EMS in simulation, controller-in-the-loop or DSP hardware before connecting a vehicle.
  8. Commission with independent protection. Use contactors, fuses, insulation monitoring, thermal limits, watchdogs and a deterministic fallback controller so a failed estimator or optimizer cannot command unsafe power.

Bottom line

Fuzzy-adaptive MPPT addresses PV extraction, Kalman estimation addresses battery-state uncertainty, and predictive EMS addresses station-level scheduling. Combining them can improve the modeled response to changing irradiance and EV demand, while Lyapunov analysis can support a conditional stability claim. The published related evidence is predominantly simulation-based, and the exact-title performance figures remain provisional until a primary paper and its hardware-test details are independently confirmed.
