FTTP Modem, ONT and Router Explained: What Each Box Does

On a full-fibre (FTTP) connection, the wall-mounted box is usually an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). It converts the fibre signal into Ethernet, but it does not provide Wi-Fi. An Ethernet cable runs from the ONT to your router’s WAN or Internet port; the router then creates your home network, supplies Wi-Fi and connects wired devices. A separate traditional DSL modem is normally not required.

What FTTP means for the equipment in your home

FTTP, or Fibre to the Premises, carries the broadband signal over fibre optic cable all the way to your property. That differs from FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet), where fibre reaches a street cabinet and the final section to the home uses copper telephone wiring.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Because the FTTP signal arrives as light in a fibre, your provider needs a device inside the property to terminate that fibre and hand the connection to ordinary Ethernet networking equipment. That device is the Optical Network Terminal, normally shortened to ONT.

The ONT is the fibre endpoint, not the device that manages your home network. The router performs that second job: it authenticates or establishes the broadband session, routes traffic between the internet and your local devices, provides Ethernet LAN ports and creates the Wi-Fi network. Optional mesh nodes or access points only extend that Wi-Fi coverage.

Identify each part of an FTTP setup

Equipment What it does What it does not do
Fibre line Carries the optical broadband signal from the provider’s network to the premises. It does not create Wi-Fi or provide Ethernet ports by itself.
ONT Terminates the fibre and converts optical data into Ethernet. It is not the home Wi-Fi router and normally cannot replace the router.
Router Connects to the provider’s WAN, routes traffic, supplies Wi-Fi and offers wired LAN ports. It does not replace the property-installed ONT on a standard FTTP service.
Mesh node or access point Extends wireless coverage to rooms the main router does not reach well. It does not terminate the incoming fibre and cannot substitute for the ONT.

The fibre cable

The fibre enters the building and is routed to the ONT location selected during installation. Fibre should not be sharply bent, crushed or disconnected casually. The optical connector belongs in the ONT’s fibre port; it is not a plug for a normal router.

The ONT

The ONT is commonly a small wall-mounted box with a fibre or optical socket, one or more Ethernet data ports, status lights and a power connection. Some installations also expose a telephone port for a voice service. Openreach describes the ONT as neither a router nor a traditional modem, although providers and customers sometimes call it an Openreach modem.

The router

Your provider may supply a combined hub or a separate router. Its Internet, WAN or Fibre port accepts the Ethernet cable from the ONT. The remaining LAN ports are for computers, switches, televisions and other wired equipment, while its wireless radios provide Wi-Fi.

Mesh nodes and access points

A mesh system uses a main unit connected to the router and additional nodes placed around the home. Those nodes improve coverage, but they still depend on the router and ONT for the broadband connection. If the ONT has no working service, adding another mesh node will not restore internet access.

How the FTTP connection is wired

The normal signal path is:

  1. Fibre from the provider’s network enters the property.
  2. The fibre plugs into the ONT’s optical port.
  3. The ONT’s Ethernet data port, usually labelled LAN or Data, connects by Ethernet cable to the router’s WAN, Internet or Fibre port.
  4. The router distributes the connection over Wi-Fi and its LAN ports to devices in the home.

Do not connect the ONT Ethernet cable to one of the router’s numbered LAN ports unless the router’s instructions specifically require a different mode. On a conventional setup, the ONT feeds the router’s WAN side, which separates the internet connection from your private home network.

ONT ports, labels and status lights

Ports you may see

  • Optical or fibre port: accepts the incoming fibre connector. Leave this fixed unless an installer or provider instructs you otherwise.
  • Ethernet LAN or Data port: supplies the electrical Ethernet hand-off to the router. Openreach installations commonly use Ethernet Port 1 for the active service.
  • Telephone port: present on supported voice installations; it is not a substitute for the router’s Internet connection.
  • Power socket: supplies the ONT’s external power adapter. The ONT must remain powered for broadband to work.

What the lights usually indicate

Exact names vary by ONT model, but Openreach’s setup guidance treats a solid PON light and a solid LAN light as signs that the optical service and Ethernet link are working. A flashing PON light or a red LOS (loss of signal) light can indicate a line or optical problem rather than a Wi-Fi configuration error.

Lights are diagnostic clues, not a complete test of internet access. A solid PON and LAN light show that the ONT sees the fibre network and an Ethernet device, but the router may still need correct authentication, VLAN settings or a reboot after activation.

Do you need a modem with full fibre?

For standard FTTP, you normally do not need a separate traditional modem. A DSL modem is designed to translate signals on copper telephone wiring, as used by ADSL or many FTTC services. FTTP presents Ethernet from the ONT instead.

The terminology causes confusion because some providers label the ONT an Openreach modem. That label refers to the same fibre-termination equipment, not to a separate box that should be inserted between the ONT and router. In practical terms, treat the ONT as the fibre hand-off and the router as the device that creates the home network.

Some provider hubs combine router functions with additional hardware, so the supplied unit may look like a modem-router. The important question is which port receives Ethernet from the ONT; on FTTP it is normally the hub’s WAN or Internet port.

What happens during installation and activation

Installation visit

Openreach says a typical installation takes about one to four hours, depending on the property and the route needed for the fibre. The engineer installs the ONT inside the home, connects it to the incoming fibre and links it to the provider’s router. Wall position, cable routing and access to a power socket can affect the time.

Activation checklist

  1. Confirm that the ONT power adapter is connected and the power light is on.
  2. Check that the fibre connector has not been disturbed and that the Ethernet cable is firmly seated in the active ONT data port.
  3. Plug the other end into the router’s WAN or Internet port, not a numbered LAN port.
  4. Power the ONT first, then the router, and allow several minutes for the service to register.
  5. Check the ONT indicators. Solid PON and LAN lights are the expected signs described in Openreach’s setup guidance.
  6. Complete any provider activation page or router setup using the credentials supplied for your service.

If the provider has scheduled a later activation date, the ONT can be correctly wired while the router still reports no internet. Do not assume a failed installation solely from the router’s status during the activation window.

Can you use your own router?

Often, yes. A third-party router can connect directly to the ONT when the provider permits customer-owned equipment and the router supports the provider’s technical requirements. The key hardware requirement is an Ethernet WAN port; a router designed only for a built-in DSL line modem is not sufficient by itself.

Requirement to check Why it matters
Ethernet WAN or Internet port Receives the connection from the ONT.
PPPoE support and credentials Some providers require the router to authenticate with a username and password.
VLAN tagging support Some providers use a specific VLAN setting on the WAN service.
IPv4, IPv6 or both Match the address protocols supplied by your provider.
Provider approval and voice requirements A provider may restrict third-party routers or require its own equipment for phone services.

TP-Link’s FTTP guidance, for example, documents connecting a compatible router directly to the Openreach ONT and notes that PPPoE credentials and VLAN settings may be needed. Those settings are provider-specific, so check your ISP’s technical page before buying or configuring equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Basic replacement procedure

  1. Record the current hub’s broadband settings, including the connection type, PPPoE credentials and VLAN identifier if your provider uses them.
  2. Switch off the old router but leave the ONT powered.
  3. Connect the ONT Ethernet cable to the new router’s WAN or Internet port.
  4. Open the new router’s setup page and select the provider’s required WAN type.
  5. Enter the supplied PPPoE username and password, and enable the required VLAN tag if applicable.
  6. Save the settings, wait for the WAN status to show connected, then test both a wired device and Wi-Fi.

If the new router connects but devices have no internet, verify the credentials, VLAN value, DNS settings and whether the provider requires a specific MAC registration. If the provider does not support third-party equipment, the supplied hub may need to remain the device that terminates the service.

Avoiding double NAT

Running a personal router behind an ISP hub in ordinary router mode creates two routing layers, often called double NAT. That can complicate inbound connections, gaming, VPNs and port forwarding. If you must keep the provider hub, ask whether it supports bridge or modem mode, or configure your own device as an access point. The correct choice depends on which unit you want to perform routing and Wi-Fi duties.

Which box provides Wi-Fi?

The router provides the Wi-Fi network. The ONT does not contain the wireless radios, DHCP service or normal home-network controls needed by phones, laptops and smart-home devices.

Home layout Suitable approach Trade-off
Small or open-plan home One well-positioned router. Simpler management, but walls and distance can still reduce speed.
Large, tall or heavily partitioned home Router plus mesh nodes or wired access points. Better coverage, with extra hardware and placement or backhaul considerations.
Ethernet-wired rooms Router with wired access points or switches. More consistent performance, but requires installed Ethernet cabling.

Place the main router where the usable Ethernet cable from the ONT can reach it and where wireless coverage is practical. If the ONT is in a cupboard or at the edge of the building, a longer Ethernet run to a central router location can be more effective than leaving the router beside the ONT and relying on mesh to compensate.

FTTP and FTTC use different termination equipment

Feature FTTP / full fibre FTTC / copper final leg
Last connection into the home Fibre optic cable. Copper telephone wiring.
Termination device ONT. DSL modem, often built into the router.
Router input Ethernet WAN from the ONT. DSL line socket or a separate Ethernet hand-off, depending on the setup.
Separate traditional modem needed? Normally no. Usually yes, unless the router includes a DSL modem.

A router that has only an RJ11 DSL input cannot normally plug directly into an FTTP ONT. Conversely, an Ethernet-WAN router can be suitable for FTTP but may not include the DSL modem needed for a copper service.

Troubleshoot the connection in the right order

Symptom Likely area Checks
No lights on the ONT Power. Check the adapter, wall socket and ONT power switch if fitted. Do not use an unapproved power supply.
Red LOS light or flashing PON Optical line. Confirm the fibre has not been bent or unplugged, then contact the provider or network operator if the light persists.
PON solid but LAN off Ethernet link. Reseat or replace the Ethernet cable and verify that it is plugged into the active ONT data port and the router WAN port.
LAN solid but router says no internet Router configuration or activation. Check WAN type, PPPoE credentials, VLAN settings and the provider’s activation status.
Internet works by cable but Wi-Fi is poor Wireless coverage. Reposition the router, reduce obstructions, select a less congested channel or add a properly configured mesh node or access point.

Restart in sequence when testing: power down the router, leave the ONT powered for a short period, restart the router and wait for it to obtain service. Avoid repeatedly unplugging the optical connector; a persistent PON or LOS fault needs provider-level diagnosis.

Changing provider or moving home

Leave the ONT, its power adapter and the fixed fibre cabling with the property. Openreach states that the equipment belongs with the premises. A new provider normally activates service through the existing ONT rather than installing a second box. If the ONT is missing, damaged or has been moved, tell the provider before the activation appointment so the network operator can arrange the appropriate work.

Checklist before buying or changing equipment

  • Confirm that your service is FTTP and identify the ONT’s active Ethernet data port.
  • Choose a router with an Ethernet WAN or Internet port.
  • Check your provider’s requirements for PPPoE, VLAN tagging, IPv6 and any equipment restrictions.
  • Use a sound Ethernet cable; Cat6 is a practical choice for the ONT-to-router link.
  • Decide whether one router will cover the home or whether wired access points or mesh nodes are needed.
  • Keep the ONT powered and installed at its original location, even when replacing the router.

The simplest reliable FTTP arrangement is therefore fibre to the ONT, Ethernet from the ONT to a compatible router, and Wi-Fi or wired devices connected to that router. The ONT handles the optical-to-Ethernet conversion; the router handles the home network.
