The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said Razer must provide more than $1.07 million for consumer refunds and pay a separate $100,000 civil penalty over marketing claims for its Zephyr RGB face mask. In January 2025, the FTC announced that it was sending full refunds to 6,764 consumers by check or PayPal.
The case centered on the claim that the transparent, fan-equipped Zephyr was “N95-grade.” The FTC said the mask had never been submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for testing and had never been certified as an N95 respirator.

Why the government pursued Razer
On April 26, 2024, the United States filed a complaint in the Central District of California after an FTC notification and referral. The complaint challenged representations about the Zephyr’s performance, protective benefits and certification.
The FTC’s allegations were resolved through a stipulated proposed settlement. They should not be read as a judicial finding that Razer admitted wrongdoing. In the complaint’s summary, the government alleged: “The Zephyr has never been certified or otherwise approved as an N95 mask, and Defendants lacked competent and reliable scientific bases for their claims.”

- List: Punk mask*1, Black headgear*1, USB charging cable*2. The side lights can be charged and used repeatedly with the charging cable.
Razer’s Zephyr was a real consumer product with a transparent face design, fans, filter areas and internal color-changing lights. The dispute was about how those features and the mask’s protection were represented, not whether the product existed.

Did the Razer Zephyr qualify as an N95?
No. The FTC said the Zephyr was never tested or certified as an N95 by NIOSH, and that it had not been submitted to the FDA or NIOSH for the relevant testing. “N95-grade” was a challenged marketing description, not proof that the mask met the N95 standard.

- NIOSH-APPROVED: NIOSH, a USA federal government regulatory agency, has tested and approved the 6200 with 3M cartridges, filters or supplied air systems to help reduce inhaling certain airborne contaminants
- COMFORTABLE: Soft, lightweight facepiece with easy-to-adjust head straps for a customized fit
- DURABLE AND REUSABLE: Respirator can be disassembled, cleaned, and reused. Supplied with reclosable storage bag
- USE WITH OTHER PPE: Adjustment points located on facepiece for improved compatibility with other personal protection equipment
- APPLICATIONS: Chemical handling, chipping, chiseling, cleaning, grinding, machining, masonry, painting, sanding, sawing, welding, construction, general manufacturing, industrial maintenance
An N95 designation refers to a certified filtering facepiece respirator that meets applicable NIOSH performance requirements. A product’s appearance, fan system, replaceable filters, lighting or claimed filtration percentage does not substitute for that certification. Buyers should therefore not treat the Zephyr’s former marketing as evidence that it was an approved N95 respirator.

If you received a check
The FTC’s notice gave recipients a 90-day period to cash the checks issued in that distribution. That deadline applies to the checks sent through the January 2025 process; it does not establish that a new claim period is open today.
If you received a PayPal payment
The same notice gave recipients 30 days to accept PayPal payments. As with the checks, that was an acceptance window for payments already issued, not confirmation of an ongoing application process.

The FTC says legitimate refund recipients do not have to pay money or provide bank-account, credit-card or other account information to receive the Zephyr payment.
- Do not pay a fee to “release” or “verify” a refund.
- Do not give a caller or message sender your online-banking password, payment-card number or one-time security code.
- Be cautious of messages demanding immediate action outside the check or PayPal process described by the FTC.
- Verify questions through the published Simpluris telephone number rather than an unsolicited link or caller ID.
What the settlement means for Zephyr owners
The settlement addresses the FTC’s consumer-protection allegations and provides the announced refund pool and civil penalty. It does not turn the Zephyr into a certified respirator, and it does not establish that every unit posed the same practical level of protection in every situation.
