What you actually get in each game
Gloomhaven Digital: the original campaign plus Guildmaster
Gloomhaven Digital includes the original board-game campaign. That campaign introduces the setting, its mercenary characters, the card-driven combat system, and the long-term choices that shape your map and party.
It also includes Guildmaster, a separate adventure designed specifically for the digital version. Steam’s announcement describes more than 160 digital-exclusive Guildmaster missions. Asmodee says Guildmaster can be played solo or in online co-op with up to four players. That makes Gloomhaven unusually substantial if you want a second progression track after, or alongside, the original campaign.
Guildmaster should not be treated as a small tutorial or a handful of bonus scenarios. It is a distinct digital mode with its own mission structure, so the value of Gloomhaven Digital depends partly on whether you want that additional mode rather than only a digital recreation of the tabletop campaign.
Frosthaven Digital: the complete sequel campaign
Frosthaven Digital launched as a complete 1.0 PC adaptation on October 15, 2026, on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Its official launch description says the full tabletop campaign is included, through the climactic final chapter.
Frosthaven is presented as a sequel and evolution of Gloomhaven. The core tactical identity remains recognizable, but the sequel adds deeper mechanics and more resource management. You are not simply entering a new map with the old rules; you are taking on a larger system in which the settlement, supplies, crafting-related decisions, and scenario consequences matter more to campaign planning.
Snapshot Games representatives said the tabletop content is about 50% larger than Gloomhaven. That figure describes the content scope discussed by the developers, not a guaranteed percentage increase in your personal playtime. Scenario pace, party composition, difficulty settings, and how often you replay encounters all affect the hours you spend.
Which campaign is longer?
Frosthaven has the larger overall content footprint according to Snapshot Games’ 2025 developer interview, which characterized the tabletop game as about 50% bigger than Gloomhaven. Frosthaven Digital also includes the complete sequel campaign rather than an early-access slice or partial story.

Gloomhaven Digital can still provide an enormous amount to play because it combines the original campaign with Guildmaster’s more than 160 digital-exclusive missions. Those missions are not a direct measurement of total campaign length against Frosthaven: they belong to a separate mode and may vary in structure and completion time.
Use this practical rule:
- Choose Frosthaven when you want the larger single sequel campaign and its full story arc.
- Choose Gloomhaven when you want the original campaign plus a substantial second digital-only mode.
- Do not assume that a mission count or a “50% larger” content statement converts directly into hours for every player.
Is Frosthaven harder or more complex than Gloomhaven?
Frosthaven is the more complex game. Its design adds deeper mechanics and resource management to the tactical card system that Gloomhaven establishes. You have more campaign-level information to track, more consequences to consider between scenarios, and more opportunities for decisions outside the battle map to affect your party.
Rank #2
- Includes scenario narrative text and special rules for all 138 Frosthaven scenarios!
- 4 Scenario Play Surface Books, 96 pages each
- 16 "Destroyed" obstacle tokens
- ACCESSORY ONLY. REQUIRES A COPY OF THE FROSTHAVEN BOARD GAME TO PLAY
That complexity does not mean every individual fight is automatically harder. Difficulty depends on the scenario, your character classes, party size, upgrades, prosperity or settlement progress, and the choices you make before entering a room. The better distinction is that Frosthaven has a higher systems burden: more of your attention goes to planning the campaign as well as executing each turn.
When Gloomhaven feels easier
- You are learning the card-and-initiative system for the first time.
- You prefer a more established ruleset before dealing with additional resource decisions.
- Your group wants to focus on tactical encounters without adding as much settlement and campaign administration.
When Frosthaven’s complexity is an advantage
- You already understand Gloomhaven’s hand management and timing conventions.
- Your group enjoys long-term planning, crafting or supply decisions, and consequences that extend beyond one scenario.
- You want a sequel that expands the formula instead of simply repeating the original campaign with new maps.
Which game is better for a first-time player?
For most newcomers, Gloomhaven Digital is the cleaner first step because it presents the original campaign structure and the established ruleset without Frosthaven’s added systems. You can learn movement, initiative order, card exhaustion, monster behavior, and party specialization before taking on the sequel’s broader management layer.
Recommended Free Tools
Frosthaven Digital is a reasonable first game if you specifically want the newer design or if your group already knows Gloomhaven from the board game or digital version. Frosthaven adds an introductory adventure and a Story difficulty, both intended to improve onboarding. Story difficulty can reduce the pressure while you learn, while the intro adventure gives you a guided entry into the sequel’s mechanics.
Starting with Frosthaven does not make the game invalid, but you should expect more rules explanations and more campaign decisions. A group that includes experienced Gloomhaven players can usually absorb that load more comfortably than a completely new party.
How the onboarding options differ
Gloomhaven Digital’s learning path
Gloomhaven’s advantage is familiarity and focus. The original campaign teaches the central loop through play: select two cards, use their top and bottom actions, manage initiative, position around enemies, and decide when to recover or accept exhaustion. Once those ideas are secure, the campaign’s branching objectives and character progression become easier to read.
Guildmaster gives you another digital route, but it is not simply the same campaign with a different name. Its mission structure is built for the digital adaptation and can serve players who want more directed objectives or additional content after learning the basics.
Frosthaven Digital’s learning path
Frosthaven adds an intro adventure and Story difficulty to the digital adaptation. These options are useful when your group understands tactical role-playing games but is new to this particular system, or when one player has experience and the others do not.
Use Story difficulty as a teaching aid rather than as a permanent judgment about your skill. Once your party understands enemy priorities, card timing, and the cost of long rests or lost cards, you can decide whether the standard challenge better fits your group.
Solo play and online co-op
Both games are suitable for solo play and online cooperative play. Gloomhaven’s Guildmaster adventure is explicitly described by Asmodee as playable solo or in online co-op for up to four players. Frosthaven’s official site advertises online multiplayer for two to four players, and the digital adaptation supports solo campaign play as well.

| A mixed-experience group | Gloomhaven Digital, or Frosthaven on Story difficulty | Gloomhaven reduces the initial systems load; Frosthaven offers a gentler digital difficulty option. |
| A solo player seeking the most campaign systems | Frosthaven Digital | The sequel’s deeper management and larger campaign create more strategic layers. |
| A player who wants maximum digital-only content | Gloomhaven Digital | Guildmaster adds more than 160 missions that are exclusive to the digital version. |
Before buying for a group, confirm the current storefront version, regional availability, and any platform-specific multiplayer requirements. The documented player counts establish the supported modes, but they do not guarantee that every network, cross-platform arrangement, or future update will work identically.
How faithful are the digital adaptations?
Both adaptations are intended to stay close to their tabletop originals. Asmodee describes Gloomhaven Digital’s differences from the board game as very minor and says those changes were discussed with Isaac Childres, the game’s creator.
For Frosthaven, Snapshot Games’ CEO Julian Gollop and Game Director Hristo Petkov described the digital version as 99% faithful to the original game, with very small changes made in collaboration with Childres. “99% faithful” is the developers’ characterization, not a formal technical measurement, but it communicates the intended relationship: Frosthaven Digital is an adaptation of the tabletop campaign rather than a separate rules interpretation.
Digital versions necessarily automate bookkeeping, enemy movement, line-of-sight checks, status effects, and scenario setup. Fidelity therefore concerns rules, content, and intended decisions; it does not mean the interface or pacing will feel identical to handling physical cards and tokens.
Should you play Gloomhaven before Frosthaven?
Play Gloomhaven first if you want the original story context, need to learn the system gradually, or prefer to experience the series in release order. It is also the better choice when your group wants to explore Guildmaster’s large digital-only mission set.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can start with Frosthaven if you have already played Gloomhaven, know its core rules, or care more about the sequel’s expanded systems than about following the series chronologically. The intro adventure and Story difficulty reduce the barrier, but they do not remove the additional campaign decisions.
For a group deciding together, ask three questions:
- Do we want to learn the original system or begin with the more advanced sequel?
- Are we more interested in the original campaign plus Guildmaster, or Frosthaven’s complete sequel story?
- Will everyone enjoy managing a larger set of campaign resources between scenarios?
If the first two answers point in different directions, begin with Gloomhaven. It provides the safer shared foundation, and the sequel remains available once the group knows what it wants from the expanded design.

A decision guide by player type
Pick Gloomhaven Digital if you are new to the series
You get the original campaign, a more approachable rules foundation, solo play, online co-op, and a separate Guildmaster mode with more than 160 digital-exclusive missions. This is the strongest all-around starting point when your group has not played either tabletop game.
Pick Gloomhaven Digital if Guildmaster is the main attraction
Guildmaster is the deciding feature if you specifically want a digital-first adventure rather than only the board-game campaign translated to a computer. Its mission count makes it a major part of the product, not a token bonus.
Pick Frosthaven Digital if you have finished Gloomhaven
Frosthaven extends the formula with deeper mechanics, more resource management, a larger content scope, and a complete sequel campaign. Experienced players are more likely to appreciate those additions without feeling overloaded by them.
Pick Frosthaven Digital if your group wants stronger digital onboarding
The intro adventure and Story difficulty give a new group more control over its learning curve. They are particularly useful when players have different levels of experience.
Pick either for a remote four-player group
Both games document online co-op support for up to four players. Decide first whether your group wants Gloomhaven’s original campaign and Guildmaster or Frosthaven’s larger, more complex sequel. Player count alone does not separate them.
Common misconceptions
“Frosthaven is just a bigger Gloomhaven expansion.”
It is a sequel and evolution with additional mechanics and resource management. Its systems and campaign scope are broader, so it should be approached as a new campaign game that builds on Gloomhaven rather than as a small add-on.
“More missions automatically means Gloomhaven has the longer campaign.”
Gloomhaven’s Guildmaster has more than 160 digital-exclusive missions, while Frosthaven is described as about 50% larger in tabletop content. Those figures measure different things and cannot establish a direct playtime winner.
“Digital fidelity means the computer version has no changes.”
Both adaptations make small changes for digital play. Asmodee calls Gloomhaven’s differences very minor, and Snapshot Games describes Frosthaven as 99% faithful with small collaborative changes. The games preserve the tabletop design while automating its physical procedures.
