A striking image helps us see the sky; it is the measurements, models, uncertainty estimates, and cross-checks that support claims about the universe.
What happens between a telescope image and a cosmological result?
- Record and process the light. A detector captures light through a particular instrument and wavelength range. Calibration and processing account for instrumental effects and combine observations into usable data products. NASA explains that public Hubble images are produced by processing Hubble data; the image is a presentation of observations, not a substitute for them: how Hubble images are made.
- Find sources and measure them. Software identifies objects and measures properties such as their positions and brightness. Observing the same field in multiple wavelength bands gives astronomers more information than a single-color image. The COSMOS2020 study, for example, reports source detection and multi-wavelength photometry across a two-square-degree field: COSMOS2020.
- Estimate or measure redshift. Astronomers can estimate a galaxy’s redshift from its brightness in multiple bands, or measure it from spectral features observed at shifted wavelengths. These approaches have different resource demands and uncertainties; they are complementary, not interchangeable.
- Build a three-dimensional map. Combining positions on the sky with redshifts organizes galaxies into broad distance and cosmic-time slices. The COSMOS field, for instance, was designed to study galaxy formation and evolution across cosmic time and large-scale environment: NASA/IPAC COSMOS catalog description.
- Test models against populations. Astronomers compare the distribution and evolution of many objects with predictions from cosmological models. Galaxy clustering, supernova distances, gravitational lensing, and other probes can test expansion and the growth of cosmic structure. Multiple approaches matter because agreement can strengthen a result, while disagreement can expose systematic errors.
How do astronomers know how far away a galaxy is?
They usually do not read a precise distance directly from a picture. Instead, they measure or estimate redshift and interpret it within a cosmological framework. As space expands, light traveling through it is stretched toward longer wavelengths. In a spectrum, astronomers identify familiar emission or absorption features and compare their observed wavelengths with their known rest-frame wavelengths. The shift gives a redshift measurement: NASA’s overview of redshift.

Redshift is not, by itself, a model-free distance. Translating it into distance or an expansion history requires a cosmological framework. Greater redshift generally means light has traveled longer and is seen from further back in cosmic history, but a distance inferred from that redshift depends on the model used.
Photometric and spectroscopic redshifts answer the question differently
| Method | What is measured | Strength and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Photometric redshift | Brightness measurements across multiple wavelength bands, interpreted with templates or models | Can estimate redshifts for large numbers of sources using survey images, but reliability depends on data quality, wavelength coverage, modeling, and calibration. |
| Spectroscopic redshift | Wavelength-resolved light, with identifiable emission or absorption features | Provides a more direct redshift measurement, but obtaining spectra requires additional observations and resources. |
The COSMOS2020 authors reported 1.7 million detected sources across two square degrees, with about 966,000 sources measured using all available broad-band data. In that study, photometric-redshift accuracy was reported as sub-percent for sources brighter than i=21 and as 5% precision for the faintest sources at 25<i<27. Those figures describe that study and those brightness ranges; they are not universal performance guarantees for every survey or galaxy: COSMOS2020 paper.

How do images show that the universe is expanding?
A single image generally cannot establish cosmic expansion. Images become useful evidence when they feed catalogs containing measured positions, brightnesses, and redshifts for many galaxies. Those data let researchers examine how galaxy distributions and other cosmic signals vary with redshift and compare the patterns with predictions. NASA describes baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions as information that can be extracted from galaxy distributions and redshifts: Roman Space Telescope science.
Cosmological conclusions are stronger when different methods agree. Galaxy distributions, supernova distances, gravitational lensing, and observations of the cosmic microwave background probe different aspects of cosmic history and structure. The cosmic microwave background preserves information from about 470,000 years after the Big Bang, according to NASA JPL: NASA JPL’s universe overview. No single polished image or measurement replaces the need to account for uncertainties and possible systematic effects across these methods.

What large surveys add
Survey scale makes the transition from individual pictures to population-level evidence possible. The NASA/IPAC COSMOS description says its field spans two square degrees and detects more than two million galaxies across 75% of the age of the universe. That is the catalog description’s characterization; it is distinct from COSMOS2020’s own source counts and measured sample.
