The companies are using the same partner for India-scale execution, but their technology strategies remain distinct—Meta centers on deployable Llama models, while Google combines Gemini, Google Cloud, TPUs and Android reach.
Why the 2020 investments mattered beyond ownership
Reliance Jio was already reshaping India’s internet market when both companies invested. Jio said it had brought more than 388 million people online in less than four years, giving strategic partners a way to reach consumers and small businesses at national scale.

Meta: WhatsApp commerce around Jio’s network
In April 2020, Meta (then Facebook) announced a $5.7 billion investment, or ₹43,574 crore, in Jio Platforms. Meta described itself as Jio’s largest minority shareholder. The commercial idea was to connect JioMart with WhatsApp so customers could discover businesses, communicate with sellers and complete purchases through a mobile experience. For Meta, the investment linked WhatsApp and its broader social reach to Jio’s small-business ecosystem.
Google: Android distribution and an affordable smartphone
On July 15, 2020, Google announced a $4.5 billion investment, or ₹33,737 crore, for a 7.73% stake in Jio Platforms. The same announcement proposed jointly developing an affordable entry-level smartphone optimized for Android and the Play Store. Google presented the deal as the first investment from its Google for India Digitization Fund, combining equity with product and ecosystem partnerships.

These were therefore distribution strategies as much as financial investments. Meta supplied consumer and merchant engagement through WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram; Google supplied Android, Play Store access and device expertise; Jio supplied network scale and local execution.
The relationship changed from access to AI systems in 2025
Meta’s proposed Llama enterprise joint venture
In August 2025, Meta announced an intended strategic joint venture with Reliance to develop enterprise AI solutions based on Meta’s Llama models. The proposed products covered sales, marketing, information technology, customer service and finance.
The design emphasized deployment choice. Solutions could run in public cloud environments, on a customer’s premises or on Reliance infrastructure. Meta said Jio connectivity and Reliance AI data centers could support secure, low-latency deployments while reducing inference costs.

That announcement described an intention to form the venture and said customary regulatory approvals were required, with closing expected later in 2025. It should not be read as confirmation that every proposed product, ownership arrangement or deployment was already operating. Mark Zuckerberg said Meta was “excited to deepen our partnership with Reliance to bring the power of open‑source AI to Indian developers and enterprises.”
Google Cloud’s dedicated Reliance region
On August 29, 2025, Reliance and Google Cloud announced a separate expansion. Reliance would design, build and power an AI-focused cloud region dedicated to Reliance in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Google Cloud would contribute AI-compute expertise, an AI hypercomputer and an integrated stack of models, development tools and applications.
Jio’s fiber network was planned to connect Jamnagar with Mumbai, Delhi and other metropolitan areas. The proposed region was intended to serve Reliance businesses as well as enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, startups, developers and public-sector organizations. This is a deeper commitment than a distribution deal: it places energy, facilities, networking and accelerated computing at the center of the partnership.

Google’s consumer and enterprise package
On October 30, 2025, Reliance and Google announced an AI distribution and infrastructure package. Eligible Jio users would receive Google AI Pro, including Gemini 2.5 Pro, for 18 months at no extra charge. The announcement valued that allowance at ₹35,100 per user.

The package also included access to Google Cloud TPUs and made Reliance Intelligence a strategic go-to-market partner for Gemini Enterprise in Indian organizations. The consumer offer and its eligibility rules are time-sensitive; users should check the current Jio and Google terms before relying on the stated duration or value.
Sundar Pichai characterized the shift as an extension of the companies’ earlier connectivity work: Google’s partnership with Reliance and Jio had helped bring affordable internet to millions, and the next phase was intended to shape adoption of AI.

Meta’s 2026 move: becoming an infrastructure customer
In June 2026, Meta and Reliance announced an agreement for a new AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar. Reliance will build the facility, while Meta will lease 168 megawatts of capacity in the first phase, with options to scale.
The planned site is intended to use renewable energy and desalinated-seawater cooling. Meta said the agreement extends the relationship from its 2020 Jio investment and the later Llama enterprise-AI venture into the physical infrastructure that powers Meta products and AI capabilities.

What Google and Meta gained from Jio
Meta’s gains
- A large, established consumer and merchant channel through Jio and WhatsApp.
- A route to enterprise adoption of Llama with flexible cloud, on-premises and Reliance-hosted deployment.
- Local connectivity and data-center capacity that can support lower-latency inference in India.
- A dedicated physical site that can add AI capacity for Meta’s global systems, rather than only serving Indian distribution.
Google’s gains
- Android and Play Store distribution tied to an affordable-device program.
- A national consumer channel for Gemini through eligible Jio users.
- A large, dedicated environment for Google Cloud AI compute, including TPUs and an AI hypercomputer.
- Reliance Intelligence as a route into Indian organizations evaluating Gemini Enterprise.
Is Reliance becoming an AI infrastructure partner?
Yes, the announced agreements show a clear expansion from telecom distribution to AI infrastructure. Reliance is not only supplying customers; it is also expected to provide facilities, energy, cooling, fiber connectivity and operating scale for accelerated computing.
The roles are not identical across the two alliances. Meta’s model is centered on open-source Llama software, enterprise customization and deployment flexibility, followed by a major leased-capacity commitment for Meta’s own AI infrastructure. Google’s model combines proprietary Gemini models with managed Google Cloud services, TPUs, Android distribution and a consumer subscription offer.
What the evolution means
- 2020 established reach. Equity investments connected two global technology ecosystems to Jio’s rapidly growing user base and local business network.
- 2025 established AI channels. Meta pursued enterprise applications built on Llama, while Google paired Gemini with cloud infrastructure, TPUs and a Jio customer offer.
- 2025–26 established physical capacity. Reliance moved into designing and powering AI-focused facilities, and Meta committed to leasing capacity in Jamnagar.
The result is an AI alliance ecosystem rather than one joint platform. Google and Meta both rely on Reliance for India-scale execution, but they retain different models, products and commercial paths. The most important change is Reliance’s position: from shareholder counterpart and telecom distributor to software channel, cloud-region operator and infrastructure provider.
