You can turn Grandpa’s old recordings into searchable transcripts and recipe drafts, but keep the audio as the authority: preserve an untouched copy, mark uncertain words and missing measurements, and have relatives review every recipe. First identify the recording format. The cassette steps below apply only if the recordings are on cassette; digital memo files and other media need a compatible transfer method.
Start by identifying and inspecting the recording
Make an inventory before playing anything. Note whether each item is a cassette, microcassette, digital memo file, or another format. Keep original labels and record what relatives remember about the speaker, date, occasion, language, and context. Those recollections can help identify a recording, but distinguish them from details actually audible on it.

If a recording is on cassette, inspect the shell and any exposed tape. Mold, contamination, breakage, loose tape, or a damaged cassette can make playback harmful. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s Technical Bulletin 30 advises evaluating tape condition before transfer and describes professional cleaning for heavily contaminated or moldy tapes. If an irreplaceable tape looks fragile or damaged, stop rather than testing it in a player; ask an audio-preservation specialist about assessment and transfer.
Choose a transfer route that fits the carrier and its condition
For a healthy, playable cassette, digitization requires a working cassette deck or player, a suitable audio connection, and software or equipment that captures the playback. The tape must play through in real time. The Canadian Conservation Institute outlines a workflow of evaluation, playback, analog-to-digital conversion, editing and quality checks, creation of preservation and access files, storage, and future migration.

For a cassette, use equipment that matches the actual tape format and produces a stable audio signal. A USB cassette deck is one possible consumer setup, not proof of archival-quality capture. UBC Library documented a 2019 workflow using an ION Tape 2 PC USB cassette deck and Audacity, exporting a WAV preservation file and an MP3 access file. That is an example, not a current product recommendation or a universal technical standard; the UBC account describes that specific transfer.
Keep a preservation master separate from listening and editing copies
Save the initial capture as an unchanged preservation master. Make separate working copies for noise reduction, clipping, transcription, or other edits, and keep a convenient access copy for routine listening. NARA recommends asking for both a preservation copy and an access copy; its audio capture guidance also describes descriptive and technical metadata and recommends a backup copy. WAV and MP3 were used in UBC’s example, but the right file choices depend on the transfer and preservation requirements rather than that one workflow alone.

Record useful context while it is fresh: the carrier, transfer date, playback equipment, capture settings if known, file relationship to the original, and any edits made to working copies. Use descriptive filenames and keep related notes with the audio. The Library of Congress recommends open formats where possible, choosing the highest-quality version when duplicates exist, adding descriptive names and metadata, organizing files, and keeping copies in different places in its personal archiving advice. Plan to refresh preservation copies as formats and storage media age.
Use offline speech recognition for a draft, not a transcript of record
Once you have a preserved capture, create a working copy for transcription. Diktafon’s project repository describes a free, open-source Android app with on-device Whisper transcription and Qwen summaries, with models downloaded on first run. Initial setup may therefore need Wi-Fi; whether later processing is actually offline depends on the app version, downloaded models, and device configuration. These are project developers’ descriptions, not an independent accuracy or privacy audit. Check the current Diktafon repository for version-specific details, then verify local processing on the device before relying on it for sensitive recordings.

Do not assume a model will understand a 1990s recording, a particular language or accent, family names, or kitchen terminology. The available project documentation does not establish transcription accuracy for Grandpa’s tapes or comparative performance on this kind of audio. Try a short, noncritical excerpt first. Replay uncertain passages against the original capture, preserve timestamps or another route back to the relevant audio when possible, and ask family members to check names, ingredients, and context. Treat summaries as aids to navigation, not evidence of what was said.
Build each recipe as a traceable family record
A recipe draft should retain its connection to both the recording and the people who interpret it. Keep the source audio, transcript, and edited recipe as related but distinct records. A useful entry can include:

- A working title and speaker attribution, with uncertainty noted where needed.
- The recording filename and the relevant time range.
- A transcript excerpt, with unclear words marked rather than silently resolved.
- Ingredients and quantities as spoken, including phrases such as “some” or “to taste.”
- Steps kept in the original order, plus questions about missing timings, temperatures, or amounts.
- Family review notes, including who supplied a correction or variation and when.
Separate Grandpa’s words from editorially normalized instructions. If a muffled phrase could be more than one ingredient, record the alternatives as questions. Do not let a transcription or AI summary turn a guess into a quotation, or fill in a missing quantity as though it came from the recording. Relatives can test a recipe, annotate what worked, and contribute photos, dates, stories, or later variations as attributed additions rather than silent replacements.
Make the cookbook without losing the archive
After family review, assemble the selected recipes and their stories into an editable manuscript. Keep that source file alongside the preservation audio, transcripts, and supporting notes; a printed book should not become the only copy. Before sharing or printing, agree with contributors on attribution and permissions for recordings, stories, photographs, and recipe notes. Maintain backup copies in different places, and retain enough metadata to understand what each file is and how it relates to the original.
