Sjoerd Marijne’s impact on Indian women’s hockey is best understood as two chapters: a 2017–2021 rebuild that took the team to its first Olympic semifinal and fourth place at Tokyo, and a return as chief coach in 2026 followed by a reported run of major wins. Neither chapter was a solo rescue. The first depended on a wider coaching staff and players building trust and belief; the second’s results and team-culture account have been reported by Hindustan Times.
How Marijne began rebuilding the team in 2017
India had finished 12th of 12 at Rio 2016. Looking back in a 2021 interview, Marijne said his first impressions came during a March 2017 match against Belarus: he saw a team he considered unfit and making technical errors. That was his coaching assessment, not a formal fitness evaluation. He said he worked backward from the kind of team he wanted India to be at the Olympics, treating improvement as a process rather than a quick fix. The Indian Express, 30 August 2021

Trust and confidence alongside training
Marijne described trying to make it safe for players to raise questions and problems without fearing that speaking up would cost them a place in the team. In his account, confidence and clear goals were part of the rebuild, not extras added after physical and technical work.

A team effort, not a one-coach turnaround
Marijne explicitly resisted taking sole credit. He recognized analytical coach Janneke Schopman’s work and strength-and-conditioning coach Wayne Lombard’s contribution. He also described a broader aim: improving the standing of women in the sport and encouraging players to set ambitious goals. The outcome emerged from the players’ work and a staff effort, as well as the head coach’s approach.

What happened to India at Tokyo 2020
The Tokyo Olympics took place in 2021. India lost its first three pool matches, then recovered to reach the knockout rounds. Hockey India’s campaign account records the sequence below. Hockey India, 6 August 2021
| Stage | Result |
|---|---|
| Pool | Netherlands 5–1 India; Germany 2–0 India; Great Britain 4–1 India |
| Pool | India 1–0 Ireland; India 4–3 South Africa |
| Quarterfinal | India beat Australia, reaching the Olympic semifinals for the first time |
| Semifinal | Argentina beat India 2–1 |
| Bronze-medal match | Great Britain beat India 4–3; India finished fourth, without a medal |
Why the recovery mattered
Marijne later identified the pool match against Great Britain as a turning point in the team’s mindset. He said he and Schopman held individual meetings with players, but that the players themselves found the key to the matches that followed. Their quarterfinal win over Australia earned India a place in its first Olympic semifinal; it did not erase the narrow defeats that followed or turn fourth place into a medal.

After the bronze-medal match, Marijne said: “I told the team that we didn’t win a medal, but we achieved something bigger than a medal and that’s inspiring an entire nation.” That was his interpretation of the team’s impact, not a claim that India had won a medal. Hockey India also quoted Schopman on the players’ willingness to learn: “What I have seen in this Indian team is their desire to learn. They ask a lot of questions and are willing to try a lot of things, which is quite impressive.” Hockey India, 6 August 2021

A Hindustan Times account updated on 3 October 2026 describes a second rebuild after India missed Paris 2024 and lost FIH Pro League status. The report presents a team-first culture, player freedom, discipline, and stronger interaction between senior and junior players as parts of the reset. Those are the newspaper’s account and the views of people it quotes; they are explanations of the team’s culture, not independently established proof that any one factor caused the results.
Marijne told the paper: “The most important thing is creating a culture where players can be themselves, where the discipline is really high. I have high expectations, but also a lot of space for fun and enjoyment.” Former India coach Neil Hawgood described the balance this way: “Sjoerd gives them structure and discipline and the freedom to play within those boundaries.” Former India captain Pritam Rani Siwach said: “What Marijne does is he lets the girls be free and play freely. He does not scare them that if they don’t play well, they will be dropped.” Hindustan Times, updated 3 October 2026

The results attributed to the return-era team
The same Hindustan Times report says India won the World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad in March 2026 and the Nations Cup in June, regained FIH Pro League status, finished fifth at the World Cup, and won Asian Games gold. It says that Asian Games result secured direct qualification for Los Angeles 2028. The outlet also describes fifth place as India’s best World Cup finish since the inaugural 1974 edition and says the gold ended a 44-year wait for a second Asian Games title. These current results and figures are reported by that newspaper; they are not independently cross-checked here against event records.
For the 2026 World Cup, the report says India fielded 11 debutants, lost once (0–2 to the Netherlands), drew with China, England, and Australia, beat South Africa 6–1, and beat Germany 3–1. This is a reported tournament snapshot, not a substitute for a full match record.

| Measure | 2017–2021 tenure | 2026 return |
|---|---|---|
| Starting context | After India finished 12th of 12 at Rio 2016; Marijne said he saw fitness and technical issues in 2017 | After missing Paris 2024 and losing FIH Pro League status, according to Hindustan Times |
| Reported priorities | Physical and technical improvement, player trust, confidence, goal-setting, and staff contributions | Team-first culture, discipline, player freedom, and senior–junior interaction, as described by Hindustan Times and its interviewees |
| Measure of success | First Olympic semifinal appearance and fourth place at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021; no medal | Reported qualifier and Nations Cup wins, return to the Pro League, fifth at the World Cup, and Asian Games gold with direct Los Angeles 2028 qualification |
The competitions and measures are different: Tokyo was an Olympic campaign, while the 2026 account spans several tournaments and qualification. The common thread is not a single tactic or a guaranteed coaching formula. It is a longer effort to raise standards while giving players room to learn and perform, with staff and athletes sharing the work.
