A reliable workflow starts with an approved product reference, checks garment and wearer fidelity, then verifies each exported file against the destination marketplace’s rules. There is no universal fashion-image standard: treat every retailer, locale, and category as a separate approval checklist.
What should a flat lay-to-on-model workflow protect?
The final image should show the garment as it is, not merely look polished. Compare it with an approved sample or reference for color, pattern, logo placement, material cues, silhouette, and visible construction. Keep the whole garment recognizable and in frame wherever the selected view requires it.

A flat lay or packshot is useful as a product reference, while an on-model image communicates how the item is worn. Which can serve as the primary image depends on the destination’s rules. For example, Amazon US clothing main images generally require a model, subject to category exceptions; Zalando supports different view types under its own presentation rules. Build the reference set before editing
- Gather an approved product reference. Use the approved sample or reference image, a color swatch or supplied color specification, and available front, back, and detail views.
- Identify the destination. Record the marketplace, locale, and product category; requirements can vary across all three.
- Label the intended view. Mark each asset as a flat lay or packshot, model view, detail view, or other supporting view. This makes it easier to distinguish a product-fidelity issue from a view-type mismatch.
- Keep color references with the files. GS1 recommends matching product color to supplied PMS colors or swatches: “Colour should be matched to product PMS colours (list to be provided by designer).” Retaining the swatch or specification with the approved reference makes color review traceable. Check that the garment and wearer remain true
Review the edited image against the reference rather than relying on visual appeal alone. Look for changes to the garment’s color, print, logos, fabric appearance, proportions, or construction. Reject edits that invent details or distort the silhouette.

For virtual try-on or other synthetic edits, inspect the person and the garment as separate subjects. OpenAI’s image-evaluation guidance identifies preservation of wearer identity, body shape, and pose alongside garment color, pattern, logos, and material cues. It also calls for edits to stay local and for occlusion, lighting, drape, and wrinkles to remain physically plausible. A convincing-looking result can still be inaccurate if it changes either the person or the product.
Retouching boundaries matter, too. Zalando says: “We don’t apply visual filters, change saturation or lighting, or remove props. Our retouchers won’t perform any edits that change how the article actually looks.” Its guide describes positioning packshots, cropping to requirements, and adjusting backgrounds as permitted work. Verify composition and file specifications by destination
Check the actual export for crop, orientation, aspect ratio, dimensions, sharpness, color mode, background, and file-size limits. Apply the destination’s current rules rather than treating one retailer’s specification as a general standard.
Amazon US clothing main images
Amazon US generally requires clothing main images to show the product on a model against a pure white background, with the complete product in frame. Its rules include exceptions for certain children’s and baby form-fitting garments and accessories. Alternate images need at least 1,000 pixels on one dimension to activate zoom, and Amazon says image color must match the product. These details refer to US Seller Central; check the current rule for the relevant category and marketplace at Amazon’s image requirements.

Zalando apparel images
Zalando’s global apparel image guide specifies a portrait aspect ratio of 1:1.44, a minimum size of 762 × 1100 pixels, and sRGB color mode. Its broader image guideline says apparel and shoes should cover approximately 80% of the frame on its grid template. Pixel dimensions alone are not enough if an image is blurred. The global guideline was updated October 1, 2026; consult the current apparel image guide and broader image guidelines before export.
Use a repeatable review and export checklist
- Product truth: Compare color, pattern, logo placement, material cues, silhouette, and visible construction to the approved reference.
- View and framing: Confirm the asset is the intended view and that the product is complete, recognizable, and correctly cropped for its use.
- Technical quality: Check dimensions, aspect ratio, orientation, sharpness, color mode, background, and file size against the destination’s current specification.
- Synthetic-edit fidelity: Where applicable, check wearer identity, body shape, pose, garment cues, local editing, and plausible drape, lighting, wrinkles, and occlusion.
- Export verification: Reopen the exported file and inspect that deliverable, not just the working document. Confirm it matches the approved version and channel checklist.
Keep a versioned checklist for each retailer. A practical defect log can record the SKU, view type, destination, source reference, defect category, disposition, and final export version. This creates a traceable record of the team’s review decisions; it is a workflow recommendation, not a marketplace requirement.

Why one approved image may fail on another channel
Marketplace acceptance and product fidelity are related but distinct. An image can accurately show the item yet use a view, background, crop, or color mode that does not meet a destination’s rules. Conversely, a technically compliant file can still misrepresent the garment through a changed color or distorted fit. Route each export through both checks, and recheck live requirements when the marketplace, locale, or category changes.
