A retailer lists a Cough Syrup Cartoon Cup tee among named graphic designs; PLAY’s heart with eyes is described as a recurring mark on everyday clothing. Cough Syrup: named graphic tees
Cough Syrup’s own account presents the label as a Los Angeles apparel venture associated with Desto Dubb, tracing a path from selling clothing out of a van to retail stores in Southern California. It does not give a dated founding year or a detailed history of individual graphics. A third-party listing for a Cartoon Cup T-shirt supplies one concrete design example, but cannot establish the visual language of every Cough Syrup collection (Cough Syrup’s About page; third-party Cartoon Cup tee listing).
PLAY: a repeated heart-with-eyes emblem
Comme des Garçons PLAY is described as a casual line launched in 2002. Its heart-with-eyes mark is associated with artist Filip Pagowski and appears on pieces including T-shirts, cardigans, and hoodies. Unlike a single named shirt graphic, a repeated emblem can connect several garment types to one recognizable visual identity (SEVENSTORE’s account of PLAY and Pagowski).

Who made the PLAY heart—and what came first?
Pagowski’s own account adds an important distinction: the image was not originally drawn specifically for PLAY. In a 2009 interview, he said he submitted it for another Comme des Garçons project, where it was not used, and that it later resurfaced as the PLAY logo. He described the image and the creation of the PLAY line as happening simultaneously but independently, rather than presenting the heart as a design commissioned from the outset for that line.
“PLAY heart image happened simultaneously with, but independently of the creation of the PLAY line. It’s as if we both were affected subliminally by each other’s work. I submitted it for another CdG project, for which it never made it, but eventually it resurfaced; making bigger waves as a logo for the PLAY line.”

That is a visual and contextual comparison, not proof of a broader causal story. The cited brand account and interview do not quantify either label’s cultural reach, establish that either drove streetwear’s development, or document a direct influence between them.
