It is not poured straight into a vehicle: raw or filtered cooking oil is not biodiesel, and biodiesel is different from renewable diesel.
What “chip fat” means in the fuel chain
Here, “chip fat” means used cooking oil: plant- or animal-origin oil or fat that has been used to cook food and is no longer suitable for that purpose. Businesses store it for collection as a waste feedstock. It is a starting material, not a finished vehicle fuel.

The collection chain brings oil from restaurants and caterers to a processor, where it can be aggregated and treated. The exact handling and pretreatment depend on the oil’s condition and the plant’s design.
How used cooking oil becomes biodiesel
- Collection and aggregation: A collector gathers used oil from kitchens and delivers it to a processing facility.
- Screening and pretreatment: The oil is treated to remove food solids, water and other impurities. The steps vary with the feedstock.
- Chemical conversion: In the common transesterification route, cleaned oil or fat reacts with a short-chain alcohol, commonly methanol, in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction produces biodiesel and glycerol.
- Separation and finishing: The biodiesel is separated and refined. Depending on the facility, further steps can include recovering methanol, drying, filtration and storage before the fuel is blended or supplied.

Biodiesel is not renewable diesel
Biodiesel is made by transesterification. Renewable diesel is a chemically distinct fuel made through a different process, although some feedstocks can be used for either route. Calling both “biofuel” does not make their production methods or fuel characteristics interchangeable. What the UK’s latest cited figures show
The Department for Transport’s final statistics for 2024, published in 2026, show how significant waste oils were in UK renewable-fuel supply reported under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO):

These statistics describe fuel reported in the UK scheme, not all biofuel produced worldwide or the outcome for every individual batch. The Department for Transport explains that renewable fuels’ lifecycle emissions can be lower because their feedstocks include wastes and residues. Why chip-shop oil cannot simply go into a car
Raw or merely filtered cooking oil has not undergone the chemical conversion that makes biodiesel. The US Department of Energy warns that raw or refined plant oil and recycled grease that has not been processed into biodiesel should not be used as vehicle fuel; its greater viscosity can cause engine problems. Waste controls and fuel quality in the UK
Collection and treatment
Environment Agency guidance for England’s T19 waste exemption explicitly covers collecting chip-frying oil from chip shops and treating it to make biodiesel. The exemption has conditions, including eligible waste types, limits on quantities stored or treated, secondary containment and registration. Activities outside its limits may require an environmental permit. The guidance is not a universal operating permit, and requirements can depend on the activity and jurisdiction; check current rules with the relevant regulator before collecting or processing waste oil. When waste-derived biodiesel can leave waste controls
A UK quality protocol says waste-derived biodiesel can cease to be subject to waste controls only if the producer demonstrates eligible inputs and processing, the fuel meets BS EN 14214:2012 and passes batch testing, and it is used as vehicle or heating fuel. The cited protocol applies to England, Northern Ireland and Wales and was last updated in 2015; check its current status and applicable rules before relying on it for a compliance decision. Animal-origin material
Oil or fat of animal origin, and oil that has contacted animal proteins, may trigger additional animal-by-product requirements. UK guidance describes approval and processing requirements for specific cases; it does not mean every kitchen oil stream has the same approval status.
