What is the Friend AI device?
Friend is a wearable AI companion presented as a device for conversation and positive interaction rather than getting work tasks done. MobileSyrup described the concept as an AI pen pal when Friend was announced on August 1, 2024. The current Friend product page describes a companion worn on a necklace that listens to activities shared around it and replies out loud. Friend says users can meet up to 20 friends in its app and connect one to the device.

Those descriptions are not identical: MobileSyrup’s 2024 account said replies would arrive as messages on a phone, while Friend’s current product materials describe spoken replies. Treat the former as the launch-era account, not as a definitive description of the current interaction.
Is Friend always listening?
Friend’s current product description says the device is always listening while connected. MobileSyrup also reported the always-listening design in 2024. That makes privacy a practical consideration, especially around other people who may be nearby when the device is connected.

MobileSyrup’s 2024 report said recordings were encrypted, not kept forever, and could be deleted through the app; it also said memories could not be recovered if a device broke. Those are historical claims reported at launch, not independently established current terms. For present-day details about what is recorded, how it is processed, how long it is retained, and how deletion works, check Friend’s live privacy policy. Apple says its App Store privacy summary is based on information supplied by the developer and has not been verified by Apple.
What phone and app does it require?
Friend’s product materials say the companion requires an iPhone and the Friend app. Apple’s App Store listing identifies the app as “Friend – Wearable Companion,” from Friend Global, Inc., and specifies iOS 18.1 or later; the listing is iPhone-only. Check the current app listing and Friend’s product page before relying on compatibility details, since app requirements can change.

What did Friend announce in 2024?
MobileSyrup’s August 1, 2024 article reported an announced price of $99 USD, an expected January 2025 start to shipping, and an expectation that the device would ship to Canada. It also reported that an iPhone was required and that an Android app might follow if demand justified it. These were launch-era expectations, not confirmation of current price, availability, shipping destinations, or Android support.

The same MobileSyrup report said creator Avi Schiffmann confirmed to 404 Media that Friend had raised $2.5 million at a $50 million valuation and spent $1.8 million on the Friend.com domain; it also reported a plan for roughly 30,000 devices for launch. These are figures attributed in that 2024 story and should not be read as current operating figures or evidence of product performance.

How to decide whether the device fits your needs
- Purpose: Friend is framed as a companion experience. If your priority is task automation or work productivity, that is not the product’s stated focus.
- Listening: Consider whether you are comfortable wearing a device that listens while connected, including in shared spaces. Review Friend’s current privacy terms rather than relying on launch-era descriptions.
- Interaction: The 2024 report described phone-message replies; current Friend materials describe spoken replies. Confirm the interaction you expect from current product information.
- Compatibility: The current materials specify an iPhone and app, and Apple’s listing gives iOS 18.1 or later. Android availability is not established by those materials.
- Price and delivery: Verify current pricing, shipping locations, and delivery timing directly with Friend. The 2024 figures and expected schedule are historical announcement details.
What Friend does not establish
The available product descriptions explain the intended companion role, but they do not establish that Friend reduces loneliness, improves self-esteem, or provides a therapeutic benefit. The reported fundraising, valuation, domain purchase, announced price, and planned production quantity are not measures of user outcomes.
