The next scheduled session is Monday, October 5, and the main listed economic catalyst is the September ISM Services PMI at 10:00 a.m. Eastern, according to a market calendar. Monday’s direction is not knowable in advance: the PMI, Treasury yields and rate expectations will help show whether investors focus more on cooling inflation pressure or slowing demand.
What moved stocks on Friday
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that U.S. nonfarm payroll employment increased by 29,000 in September and the unemployment rate was 4.2%. Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% from August to $37.81, a 3.0% increase over the year. The BLS also revised its estimates for July and August down by a combined 60,000 jobs. These are initial estimates and can change in later revisions. BLS September Employment Situation; BLS payroll revisions.
The report gave investors grounds to see less near-term inflation and interest-rate pressure. The Associated Press reported that the market-implied chance of an October Fed rate hike fell to less than 23%, from 64% a week earlier, citing CME Group data. That is a snapshot of market pricing, not a Federal Reserve decision or promise. The 10-year Treasury yield briefly fell below 5.17% during Friday’s trading, then retraced some of its decline. Associated Press market report.
Major indexes finished higher: the S&P 500 gained 0.7% to 7,722.72, the Dow rose 0.5% to 51,176.96, the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.2% to 27,190.86, and the Russell 2000 added 0.9% to 2,832.90. The S&P ended within 1% of its August record, but was still down 0.3% for the week; the Friday rebound followed a weak week for both the S&P and Dow. One session’s gains do not establish a new trend. Why the jobs report cuts both ways
Slower hiring can ease concern that strong wage and demand growth will keep inflation elevated, which may support bonds and stocks if investors expect less pressure for higher rates. But weak hiring can also point to cooling economic momentum and, eventually, weaker corporate demand. Friday’s figures do not settle which interpretation will matter more to markets.
Adam Schickling, a senior economist at Vanguard, told the AP that the report strengthened the case for the Fed to remain patient: the labor market had not deteriorated sharply, but there was little evidence it had meaningfully strengthened either. Associated Press report and commentary.

Yields remain an important counterweight. Axios quoted Morgan Stanley U.S. equity strategist Andrew Pauker saying equities can tolerate 5% yields if growth is strong, while warning that a rapid rise in long-term yields could trouble stocks. Higher yields can weigh on valuations and expected earnings; strong earnings growth can help offset that pressure. The comment is analyst context, not a guarantee about market performance. The services reading can add information about activity and price pressures, but its market meaning depends on the result and surrounding conditions. A stronger reading could be taken as evidence of resilient growth, while also renewing concern about inflation and rates. A weaker reading could ease rate pressure or raise concern about demand. Neither is a reliable forecast of the market’s direction on its own.

What to watch as trading begins
- The services result against expectations: Check the reported ISM reading against a consensus and prior reading from a named, current source. Friday’s calendar confirmed the scheduled event but did not provide verified consensus or prior figures.
- Treasury yields and rate pricing: Watch whether the 10-year yield steadies or resumes a rapid rise, and whether market pricing for Fed rates shifts after the PMI. Friday’s yield and rate-probability figures are historical snapshots, not Monday’s live levels.
- Market breadth: The Nasdaq outperformed Friday, while small caps also gained. See whether Monday’s moves spread across sectors and company sizes or remain concentrated; Friday’s results alone do not establish a trend.
- How investors read labor data: The downward revisions to July and August are a reminder that payroll estimates can be revised. Consider the broader employment picture rather than treating one preliminary report as final.
How to frame Monday’s market story
Two tensions matter most: the path of yields and Fed expectations, and whether labor-market cooling remains orderly or starts to signal weaker demand and earnings. If yields stay contained and growth appears resilient, investors may be more comfortable with equities. If yields rise quickly or economic readings point to a sharper slowdown, the balance of risks changes. Neither scenario is established before the data and market reaction arrive.
