The popular framing, that rising bulk mineral logistics costs are rewriting refractory and raw material contracts, does not hold up against the public evidence. Three things are separate and often blurred. “Freight class” is a US less-than-truckload (LTL) classification, not a bulk shipping price. The most recent averages for dry-bulk vessel earnings and coal freight were lower in 2025 than in 2024. And no public source we could cite shows a sector-wide rewrite of freight clauses in refractory or mineral raw-material contracts.
What is real is that freight exposure is lane-specific, cargo-specific and volatile. The sections below separate what “freight class” means, what the 2025 data shows, and which contract terms decide who carries logistics risk.

What “freight class” actually means
In North American trucking, freight class belongs to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC). The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) describes it this way: “The National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC)® is the baseline for less-than-truckload (LTL) freight identification and classification” (NMFTA, NMFC overview, page accessed 5 October 2026). Classes run from 50 to 500 and reflect density, handling, stowability and liability.
That has limited reach for mineral supply:
- It applies to LTL motor freight, meaning palletised or packaged shipments that share trailer space. It is not a dry-bulk ocean index, a rail tariff or a full-truckload contract rate.
- A class does not set a price by itself. It is a commodity-identification input that carriers use in LTL tariffs and discounts.
- It is relevant to refractory buyers mainly for finished or packaged products, such as bagged castables, bricks and shapes on pallets, moved in small US shipments. Bulk raw materials such as bauxite or iron ore move on a different cost basis.
NMFTA also sells the NMFC as a physical manual covering LTL classifications, packaging and handling (NMFTA Marketplace). It is a reference for classifying LTL shipments, not a guide to pricing bulk freight.
#1 Best Overall
- Digital shipping postal scale for weighing items; heavy duty yet lightweight, portable design
- Includes a postal scale and an AC adapter; black ABS with an aluminum anti-skid platform
- 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)

So when “freight class” is used loosely to mean “the freight cost category my material falls into,” treat it as a metaphor. The costs that matter for bulk minerals are set by vessel segment, route, fuel, port conditions and market balance.
Are bulk mineral logistics costs rising?
Not on the averages published for 2025. The figures below come from different sources and measure different things, so they are not interchangeable.
| Measure | Reported value | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Handysize spot earnings, 2025 average | US$10,580 net/day, down 5% year on year | Pacific Basin market review, 3 March 2026; Baltic Exchange series, tonnage-adjusted, excluding 5% commission. Vessel earnings, not cost per tonne. |
| Supramax spot earnings, 2025 average | US$11,630 net/day, down 10% year on year | Same source and basis as above. |
| Global seaborne dry-bulk volume, 2025 | About 2% lower | Pacific Basin review using Oceanbolt data current as of February 2026, subject to revision. |
| Dry-bulk tonne-mile demand, 2025 | Level | Same source; longer average hauls offset lower volume. |
| Selected minor bulks (excluding bauxite) | Volume up about 1%, tonne-miles up 4% | Same source and data vintage. |
| Bauxite volume | Up 14% | Same source and data vintage. |
| Iron ore and coal volume | Down 2% and 6% respectively | Same source and data vintage. |
| Coal freight rates, 2025 | Lower on average than 2024; no single aggregate percentage in the cited text | IEA, Coal 2025: Prices and costs. |
| Vale iron-ore fines freight cost | US$18.4/t in 2025 vs US$19.8/t in 2024 | Vale’s 4Q25 and 2025 results, company landed-cost table. One producer’s accounting, not an industry benchmark. |
The Handysize and Supramax numbers come from Pacific Basin Shipping’s Annual Results 2025 market review. They show what shipowners earned per vessel per day. Converting them into freight dollars per tonne needs a specific route, vessel, fuel price and voyage time, so do not read a 5% fall in daily earnings as a 5% fall in what you pay per tonne.

I found no single 2026 global bulk-mineral freight measure. The 2025 averages above and any recent index snapshot describe different periods. If you are budgeting for a 2026 or 2027 contract year, 2025 averages are context, not a forecast.
Why averages can mislead a specific buyer
The IEA puts the principle plainly: “Freight rates are influenced by vessel type, trade route, fuel costs, and the balance between supply and demand.” Any one of those can push a particular delivered cost against the average.
Volume and distance are different things
Seaborne dry-bulk volume fell about 2% in 2025, yet tonne-mile demand (weight multiplied by distance) stayed level. Pacific Basin attributes part of that to longer hauls: Guinea-to-China bauxite, exports of semi-processed commodities, and Red Sea rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope. A buyer whose supply lane lengthened can face higher voyage costs in a market where average earnings fell.

“Bulk minerals” is too broad a category
The 2025 cargo picture was uneven. Bauxite grew 14% while iron ore and coal contracted. Pacific Basin ties the iron-ore decline partly to Australian port typhoons and the coal decline to easing Chinese import stockpiling. It also lists grain disruption from war and seasonal weakness among the 2025 drivers, and says supply outpaced demand overall while inefficiencies disrupted normal market operation. A freight conclusion drawn from coal or iron ore should not be carried over to bauxite, magnesia, zircon or other refractory inputs without lane-level data.
The bauxite figure covers seaborne bauxite trade as a whole, which Pacific Basin links to Guinea-to-China flows. It does not isolate refractory-grade or calcined bauxite.
Company disclosures are single data points
Vale’s US$18.4/t sits inside its own landed-cost table, which includes other line items and adjustments. It is a useful illustration of one producer’s iron-ore freight trend. It is not an index for refractory raw materials.

What is not established about contract rewrites
The public sources used here do not document a specific refractory or mineral raw-material contract change, such as a new surcharge clause, a reallocated freight obligation or a revised escalation mechanism. They also do not show that such terms have changed uniformly across the sector. Individual buyers and suppliers may well have renegotiated, especially after Red Sea rerouting lengthened some voyages, but that would need to be shown through named agreements or party disclosures. Treat sweeping claims of an industry-wide rewrite as unproven.
The useful question is therefore not “has the market rewritten contracts?” but “does my contract handle a freight swing, and who pays when it happens?”

| Term to check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Bundled vs separated freight | Is freight embedded in the delivered price, or shown as a separate line that can move independently? |
| Adjustment trigger | Which index, fuel component or published rate triggers a change, and on which observation date and currency? |
| Baseline and reset interval | What reference level applies, and how often is it reset: per shipment, quarterly, annually? |
| Caps, floors and review dates | Is the pass-through symmetrical, or limited upward or downward? When can either side reopen it? |
| Demurrage and port congestion | Who pays waiting time at load and discharge ports, and on what laytime terms? |
| Transshipment, insurance and inland legs | Which party covers each leg beyond the main sea voyage? |
| Delay and re-routing risk | If a vessel must go around the Cape or divert, who bears the added time and cost, and does the delivery window move? |
Whether freight cost falls on the buyer or seller usually follows from the delivery term. Check which term the contract uses and exactly where risk and cost transfer, rather than assuming it from a shorthand label.
Comparing two supply options like for like
A lower quoted price from a more distant origin can be worse once logistics are included, and the reverse can also be true. Put offers on the same basis across these six axes before comparing:
- Delivered price basis: which logistics legs each price includes.
- Origin, destination, route length and mode: sea, rail, truck, or combinations.
- Cargo specification: grade, quality, moisture and quantity, since these change both price and handling.
- Freight index reference: which index, observation date and currency.
- Adjustment mechanism and risk allocation: the terms in the table above.
- Transit time and reliability: port handling, congestion history and demurrage exposure.
The market sources above show why cargo mix, haul distance, vessel segment and disruption context matter. They do not rank refractory suppliers or contract offers, and nothing here substitutes for lane-specific quotes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMonitoring freight without misreading an index
If you need to track a lane, use a route-specific index rather than a headline average. The Shanghai Shipping Exchange publishes a China Import Dry Bulk Freight Index page with route-level information, including iron-ore routes. Before relying on any index in a contract, match the route, vessel size, currency, observation date and cargo to the one you actually ship. An iron-ore route reading says little about a bauxite or magnesia lane, and a vessel-earnings series such as the Baltic Exchange figures cited above is not a per-tonne price.
The Bottom Line
Freight class is an LTL concept and does not price bulk minerals. The 2025 evidence points to lower average vessel earnings and coal freight, with lane-specific exceptions driven by distance, cargo and disruption. Whether your contract is exposed depends on its delivery term, adjustment trigger and risk allocation, so check those before drawing any conclusion from market headlines.
