How do Freely and Freesat differ?
Freely streams TV over broadband
Freely combines live and on-demand content from major UK broadcasters on compatible TVs and streaming devices. Its internet-delivered service does not need an aerial or dish, but it does rely on broadband and a supported device. Freely recommends a connection of at least 10 Mbps for live streaming, catch-up and on-demand; that is its recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing in every home. Freesat receives TV by satellite
Freesat needs a satellite dish with an unobstructed view, correctly installed cabling and compatible equipment. It does not depend on your broadband connection to receive satellite channels. Which service has more channels?
The official headline figures are not a like-for-like channel count. Freely says 96% of the UK’s most-watched shows can currently be watched live over the internet; that figure describes shows, not the percentage of channels, and the visible FAQ does not specify a measurement period or methodology. Freesat’s official pages use differently scoped figures: its FAQ says over 100 TV and radio channels, including many in HD, while its About page says the platform carries over 170 channels, including more than 25 in HD. Can Freesat record programmes?
Yes, if you choose a recordable Freesat receiver. For example, the Manhattan S4-R is a 500GB Freesat 4K recorder. Its product page says it can record up to four programmes at once with a compatible wideband LNB, or two with older setups. What does “free” mean, and do you need a TV Licence?
Neither platform charges a subscription for its core TV service, but neither necessarily costs nothing to use: broadband, compatible hardware, a dish or installation, optional paid apps and other household costs may apply. The TV Licence requirement is separate from the platform. In the UK, you need a TV Licence to watch or record live TV on any channel or service, including Freely or Freesat, and to watch BBC iPlayer. How to choose for your home
- Pick Freely if your broadband is reliable, you have a Freely-compatible TV or are willing to add a compatible streaming device, and you prefer not to rely on a dish. An aerial can be added on supported TVs if you also want terrestrial channels and reception is available at your address.
- Pick Freesat if you already have a usable satellite dish and compatible cabling, can install them, or want satellite reception that does not rely on broadband. It is also the clearer fit if a dedicated multi-programme recorder matters to you.
- Check your actual setup first: confirm device compatibility, broadband performance, dish visibility and condition, aerial reception if relevant, and installation needs. Compare the current channel guides for the channels you watch, not just headline totals.
