For US freelancers, there is no single cheapest way to get paid: the fee depends on whether the client pays an invoice by card, uses a wallet, authorizes an ACH debit, or sends money directly from a bank. As of October 4, 2026, PayPal invoice card payments are listed at 2.99% plus $0.49, Stripe domestic online cards at 2.9% plus $0.30, and Stripe ACH Direct Debit at 0.8% capped at $5 under standard settlement timing. A direct bank transfer has no universal fee; check both banks and the transfer type.
How much does PayPal charge freelancers?
PayPal’s US merchant fee page, last updated October 1, 2026, lists distinct rates for domestic invoice transactions. A US-dollar invoice transaction also has a $0.49 fixed fee for the applicable percentage-based methods. PayPal defines an invoicing transaction as one in which a seller sends an invoice as a payment request for goods or services and the customer pays through that invoice. See PayPal’s merchant fee schedule.

| Domestic payment through a PayPal invoice | Listed fee |
|---|---|
| Credit/debit card, Apple Pay, or other third-party wallet | 2.99% plus $0.49 for a US-dollar transaction |
| PayPal Checkout, Venmo, or Guest Checkout | 3.49% plus $0.49 for a US-dollar transaction |
| Pay Later | 4.99% plus $0.49 for a US-dollar transaction |
| Pay by Bank (ACH) | 1%, capped at $10 per transaction |
These are invoice rates, not a universal PayPal rate for every type of transaction. For international invoice transactions, PayPal adds 1.50% to the domestic invoicing rate. Other currencies have different fixed fees, and certain account types or circumstances may involve separate service, risk, currency-conversion, or other fees.
How much does Stripe charge freelancers?
Stripe’s standard US pricing lists successful domestic online card payments at 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction. Its pricing page lists additional charges of 0.5% for manually entered cards, 1.5% for international cards, and 1% when currency conversion is required; these apply only when the relevant condition applies. Stripe says standard pricing has no setup or monthly fees, while custom pricing can differ. Check Stripe’s pricing page for current terms.

Stripe’s bank payment options are not interchangeable. ACH Direct Debit is priced at 0.8% per successful charge, capped at $5 under standard settlement timing. Stripe says default ACH confirmation and settlement typically take four business days. Two-business-day settlement is available for a fee. Instant Bank Payments cost 2.6% plus $0.30, with instant payment confirmation and two-business-day settlement. Details are on Stripe’s US bank-debits page.
Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal for invoices?
It depends on how the client pays. For a domestic US-dollar invoice paid by card, Stripe’s standard online-card rate is slightly lower before considering differences in the circumstances covered by each rate: PayPal lists 2.99% plus $0.49 for invoice card payments, while Stripe lists 2.9% plus $0.30 for domestic online cards. The exact total depends on the invoice amount and whether Stripe’s additional charges apply.

For bank-based payment, compare the specific method rather than the brand. PayPal invoice Pay by Bank (ACH) is 1% capped at $10; Stripe ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5 under standard settlement timing. Stripe Instant Bank Payments have a different, higher listed fee and timing. This comparison does not establish that either provider is cheaper for every transaction, account, or client.

What is the cheapest way to get paid as a freelancer?
Calculate the total for the same invoice amount, currency, and domestic or international status. Percentage-only pricing, fixed fees, and caps affect different invoice sizes differently. For a percentage-plus-fixed-fee method, calculate the percentage of the invoice and add the fixed fee; for a capped method, compare the percentage amount with the cap and use the lower applicable fee. Then account for any applicable international-card, currency-conversion, or other listed charge.

Do bank transfers have fees?
There is no single standard price for a client sending money directly from their bank to a freelancer. Fees and timing can depend on the client’s bank, the freelancer’s bank, the transfer rail (for example, ACH or wire), payment direction, and whether the transfer is domestic or international. Check both banks’ current schedules before calling a direct transfer free or cheapest.
A direct client payment should not be confused with a processor’s bank debit or with funding an account at a financial service. For example, Stripe’s financial-account funding details list no fee for ACH transfers used to fund that account and a $2 fee for incoming Fedwire funding. Those specific funding terms do not set the price of a client’s direct bank payment to a freelancer.

Timing depends on the method. Stripe says its standard ACH Direct Debit confirmation and settlement typically take four business days; two-business-day settlement is available for a fee. Stripe Instant Bank Payments provide instant payment confirmation and settle in two business days. The cited Stripe page does not establish one timing for every direct bank transfer, so ask the banks involved about the particular transfer rail and account terms.
