Yes—you can use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote without paying for Microsoft 365, but you may not need to replace them. A free Microsoft account provides browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint plus 5 GB of OneDrive storage. If those web apps meet your needs, you can keep using familiar Microsoft files without a subscription; if you need desktop-only features, more storage, or a different workflow, consider alternatives selectively.
Can I use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote without paying Microsoft?
Microsoft’s free tier is the simplest starting point: sign in with a Microsoft account to use web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and receive 5 GB of OneDrive cloud storage. The free versions of those three apps are web-only. Microsoft describes paid plans as adding desktop apps, more storage, and other benefits. That means “without paying” does not have to mean moving all your files to another company. You can keep the Microsoft file workflow for ordinary browser-based tasks, then change only the part that falls short. The deciding questions are whether you need desktop editing, whether your files use advanced features, how much cloud storage you need, and how you take notes.

What the free Microsoft web apps can—and cannot—replace
Word, PowerPoint, and everyday Excel work
Microsoft’s browser versions cover common document, presentation, and spreadsheet work, but they are not feature-identical to the desktop applications. If you depend on a specific advanced feature, check whether it is available in the web app before changing your workflow. Microsoft documents the feature differences in its Office for the web service description.

Excel files with macros or advanced analysis
Excel for the web cannot create or run VBA macros. Microsoft says VBA-enabled workbooks can still be opened and edited in the web app without removing or corrupting the VBA, but that is not the same as being able to run the macros there. The service description also lists desktop-only limits affecting some advanced analysis, external references, offline authoring, and security capabilities. If a workbook relies on macros or specialist analysis, test a copy of a representative file before relying on a browser-only setup.
OneNote and notes
Microsoft’s free-web route also includes a OneNote browser experience. Its documented web features include managing pages and sections, using tags, co-authoring, and searching. Some desktop capabilities—such as OCR and certain inking tools—are listed as unavailable in the web version. Whether that is enough depends on how you use notes; a separate notes app is not automatically a one-for-one replacement.

OneDrive storage
The free account includes 5 GB of OneDrive cloud storage. Check your account’s storage use before moving files or relying on it for a larger archive. A storage allowance that works for documents may not be sufficient for a collection that also includes large media files.

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are another browser-based route if you would rather work in Google’s suite. Google recommends a compatible operating system and one of the two most recent browser versions for the best experience. Check Google’s system requirements for Docs, Sheets, and Slides against the devices and browsers you use.

If you expect files to sync through a desktop client, platform support matters too: Google says Drive for desktop is not available on Linux, although Linux users can use Drive on the web. The same requirements page lists supported Windows and macOS versions for the desktop client.
Do not assume that switching suites will preserve every Microsoft-specific feature or provide the same offline behavior. Confirm current account storage, offline-editing setup, and the handling of your important file types in Google’s documentation and settings before moving your working files.

Choose a workflow based on what you actually need

Before migrating, use copies of the documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and notes you rely on most. Check formatting, formulas, collaboration, and any specialized features in the actual browser and devices you plan to use. That small compatibility check is more useful than assuming that one free suite perfectly duplicates five Microsoft products.
