Free Windows 11 app automates HDR to reduce OLED burn-in exposure—and works with YouTube HDR

Smart HDR Manager is a free Windows tray utility that switches HDR on only when selected games or genuine HDR video need it, then returns Windows to SDR. That can reduce the time an OLED display shows bright, static desktop elements with HDR enabled. It is not a proven repair for permanent OLED burn-in: no independent test or laboratory result shows that it restores damaged pixels.

What Smart HDR Manager changes

Windows 11 normally leaves HDR enabled until you turn it off manually, even when you are browsing, working in Office or watching ordinary SDR video. Smart HDR Manager automates that decision. It targets a selected monitor, enables HDR for supported content and switches back to SDR after the content ends.

The developer describes the project as free, open-source software under the MIT license. The utility is said to have no internet access or telemetry and does not touch game memory, which should avoid anti-cheat concerns. It is distributed as beta software, and Windows SmartScreen may warn because the executable is unsigned.

Supported triggers and playback

Games

The app can watch games launched through Steam, Epic, GOG and Xbox. You can assign a startup delay for each game, allowing launchers and overlays to settle before HDR is enabled. When the game closes, the utility restores SDR.

  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes

Local HDR video

Local playback is supported in VLC, mpv, MPC-HC and PotPlayer. The app can switch the chosen display to HDR while HDR video is playing and return to SDR afterward.

SDR video with RTX Video HDR

An optional RTX Video HDR mode enables HDR only while an SDR video is playing, and only on the monitor you select. This mode requires compatible Nvidia hardware; the developer’s published testing used an RTX 5070 Ti.

YouTube HDR in Chrome or Edge

YouTube support uses a companion Tampermonkey userscript. The script marks a browser tab only while a real HDR stream is playing, so an ordinary SDR YouTube video does not trigger an HDR switch. Tampermonkey must allow user scripts in Chrome or Edge.

When the script is active, the tab title should show either [real_hdr_active] or [sdr_video_active]. Those markers provide a quick way to tell whether the page has identified HDR content. The developer also documents a fix for Chrome appearing dim after HDR playback.

How to set it up for automatic HDR

  1. Install the beta utility. Expect a SmartScreen warning because the executable is unsigned. Verify that you obtained the project from its legitimate release before choosing to run it.
  2. Select the HDR monitor. Per-monitor targeting matters if you have more than one display; the current testing does not establish reliable multi-monitor behavior.
  3. Add games. Register games from Steam, Epic, GOG or Xbox and set a startup delay where necessary. Launch the game and confirm that Windows changes to HDR, then close it and confirm that SDR returns.
  4. Configure a local player. Enable detection for VLC, mpv, MPC-HC or PotPlayer, then play an HDR file. HDR transitions may briefly blank the screen while Windows and the monitor resynchronize.
  5. Enable YouTube detection if needed. Install Tampermonkey in Chrome or Edge, allow user scripts, install the companion script and check for the tab-title markers during an HDR stream.
  6. Adjust return timing. The utility uses roughly a two-second video-enable delay and a roughly five-second return-to-SDR delay by default. The return delay is configurable, which helps prevent a switch while a player is buffering or changing between clips.

What the transition looks like in practice

HDR changes are not instantaneous. Windows and the monitor can take one to two seconds to resynchronize, and the display may briefly go black. The video-enable delay is about two seconds, while the default return delay is about five seconds. A longer return delay can be useful for playlists or short interruptions; a shorter one reduces the time HDR remains active after playback has ended.

The tray icon provides manual controls, and an override hotkey lets you force the current state. Command-line flags are available for Stream Deck and other automation workflows. These controls are useful when an application is misdetected or when you deliberately want HDR left on for a particular task.

Does it repair OLED burn-in?

No established evidence supports that claim. Permanent burn-in is panel wear caused by uneven, long-term pixel aging; changing the Windows HDR setting cannot restore pixels that have already degraded. Smart HDR Manager’s benefit is preventive exposure management: by keeping routine desktop work and SDR video in SDR, it may reduce unnecessary periods in which bright static interface elements are displayed under HDR conditions.

That conclusion is an inference from the utility’s switching behavior, not a measured burn-in reduction. It should therefore be treated as a way to reduce avoidable HDR exposure, alongside ordinary OLED care such as using display sleep, hiding static taskbars where practical and following the panel maker’s compensation-cycle guidance.

Smart HDR Manager versus manual HDR switching

Windows’ Win+Alt+B shortcut is immediate and requires no additional software, but it cannot identify whether a YouTube tab is playing genuine HDR, apply per-game delays or switch back when playback ends. Smart HDR Manager adds those triggers and timing controls, at the cost of installing beta software, a browser userscript for YouTube and accepting that hardware and multi-monitor coverage has not been broadly validated.

  • Do not choose it as a repair tool: neither the available evidence nor the developer’s description demonstrates reversal of existing burn-in.

Troubleshooting common failures

HDR never turns on

Check that Windows HDR is available for the selected monitor, that the game or player is supported, and that the startup delay has elapsed. For YouTube, confirm Tampermonkey user scripts are enabled and that the tab title shows the expected marker.

The screen blanks or flickers

A brief blank during a one- to two-second HDR resynchronization is expected. If switching happens repeatedly, increase the startup or return delay and check whether another utility is also changing Windows HDR.

HDR stays on after playback

Increase the return delay if the player is still buffering, then verify that the player closed or that the userscript changed from [real_hdr_active] to [sdr_video_active]. Use the tray override to restore SDR immediately.

Chrome looks dim afterward

Apply the developer’s Chrome dimness fix and restart the browser if necessary. The issue is specific to the post-HDR browser state, not evidence that the OLED panel has been repaired.
