You can watch movies legally without paying for another streaming subscription: try an ad-supported service such as Tubi, check whether your public library offers Hoopla or Kanopy, or explore free channels and broadcast options available where you live. The catch is that no service guarantees a particular popular film will be available in your country today, so search for the exact title before settling in.
Which free movie option fits your situation?
| Option | What you need | How viewing works | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tubi | No subscription; check whether the service is available in your location. | On-demand movies and shows, funded by ad breaks. | The catalog varies; search for the film you want. |
| Hoopla | A library card from a library that participates in Hoopla. | Borrow movies through the library-linked service; most titles can be downloaded for offline viewing. | Availability and borrowing rules depend on your library. |
| Kanopy | A library or other eligible partner that offers Kanopy. | Stream films from a library-linked collection; title ticket costs and viewing periods may apply. | Limits differ by partner. Seattle Public Library’s terms are one local example, not a universal allowance. |
| The Roku Channel and free-to-air TV | For Roku Channel discovery, a compatible Roku device or TV; for free-to-air TV in the UK, an aerial and compatible setup. | Browse free streaming channels or, in the UK, receive broadcast television via an aerial. | Roku’s cited free-to-air, Freely, and Freeview details apply to the UK and depend on device or TV. |

Tubi: free streaming with ads
Tubi’s official site describes its movies and TV shows as free and legal, with no subscription, and lists access through a web browser and apps for Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xfinity X1, Xbox, Samsung and Sony smart TVs, and PlayStation. Its catalog includes content from studios such as Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM. Those are Tubi’s descriptions of its service and catalog, not an independent legal assessment.

Tubi explains the business model in its Help Center: “We stay free by showing short ad breaks during our movies and TV shows.” It says advertising pays for content from studio partners MGM, Lionsgate, and Paramount, as well as independent partner Full Moon Pictures. Expect commercial breaks rather than subscription-style ad-free viewing. See Tubi’s service and device information or read Tubi’s explanation of its free and ad-supported model.
Check whether your library offers movie streaming
Hoopla: borrow movies with a library card
Hoopla says its online movie catalog is available at no monthly fee to users with a library card from a participating library. Signing up requires an email address and library-card number. Its TV-viewing options include Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung TV, Roku, and Chromecast; most titles can be downloaded for offline viewing. Because the service is based on library borrowing, access and borrowing rules are set locally. Check with your library before counting on the service.
#1 Best Overall
Hoopla’s movie page lists titles such as White Chicks, Mona Lisa Smile, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Ella Enchanted among its popular movies. A listing is not a guarantee that a title is available to every library account or in every location, and catalogs can change. Check Hoopla’s movie page and confirm participation and local rules with your library.
Kanopy: check your library’s ticket rules
Kanopy access and limits depend on the library or partner providing it. For a concrete local example, Seattle Public Library says its patrons may use up to 15 tickets per month to stream from a collection of more than 30,000 independent, classic, and other films, documentaries, and TV shows. The library says each title displays its ticket cost and viewing period; unused monthly tickets do not roll over, and a video expires 72 hours after it is played. These are Seattle Public Library’s terms, not a standard allowance for every Kanopy user.

- Shrink-wrapped
Seattle Public Library lists web browsers, iOS, Android, Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, and other TV apps as ways to watch. Its collection emphasizes independent, classic, and documentary films. Check your own library’s Kanopy page for eligibility, available titles, and any ticket cost before choosing a film. See Seattle Public Library’s Kanopy details.

Explore free channel guides and broadcast TV
Some free viewing is organized as channels rather than as a subscription catalog you browse title by title. Roku’s UK support page describes The Roku Channel as a source of free movies and television shows, with additional free content discoverable in the app marketplace. On a Roku device, its listed path is Streaming Channels > Top Free; select a channel to add it.

The same Roku UK page says viewers can receive free over-the-air digital television with an aerial. Freely or Freeview availability depends on the Roku device or TV. These broadcast details are UK-specific and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Read Roku UK’s free-movie and TV guidance.

- Search the exact title. Look in the app or service available to you rather than relying on a general list of free movies.
- Check your location and access. A title may be listed only in some territories, or behind a library account your local library does not provide.
- Check the viewing terms. Look for ads, borrowing limits, ticket costs, expiration periods, or other rules before you start.
- Use a device you already own. These services list support for a range of phones, computers, TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices. Confirm compatibility for your particular model on the service’s current device information.
Catalogs and licensing change, and the cited service pages describe their models and examples rather than guaranteeing a particular movie’s current availability everywhere. Check the title directly in your region before assuming it is free to watch.
