This converts the document’s pages, not the pictures embedded inside it. LibreOffice also lists a Writer PNG export filter, but its documentation does not establish that direct DOC-to-PNG export works consistently, so test it on a copy before relying on it.
Choose the right kind of conversion
“Convert a DOC to PNG” can mean two different things:
- Convert pages: make an image of each page as it appears in the document. The PDF route below is the recommended free workflow for this.
- Extract embedded images: save a photo, logo, or other picture already inside the DOC. That does not create images of the pages. Open the document and save or copy the individual image instead; the conversion workflow below is for page images.
A DOC is the older Microsoft Word 97–2003 document format. LibreOffice Writer lists DOC among its supported formats and can export documents to PDF. The PDF provides a practical intermediate file: render its pages as PNG with a PDF-to-image tool. This route uses free desktop software for the DOC and PDF stages; the particular PDF renderer you choose may have separate installation, licensing, or usage terms.
Convert a DOC to PNG with LibreOffice
- Install LibreOffice. Download the free, open-source office suite from the official LibreOffice site. If the document matters, keep the original unchanged and work from a copy.
- Open the copy in Writer. Use File > Open and choose the
.docfile. Writer supports Microsoft Word 97–2003 DOC files, but support does not guarantee that every font, page break, or layout element will look identical to the original Word rendering. - Review the document. Check the page count, margins, images, tables, headers, footers, and page breaks. If Writer reports that it cannot open the file, or the layout is materially different, do not proceed as if the conversion preserved the original exactly.
- Export a PDF. Choose File > Export As > Export as PDF, select a location, and save. In the PDF export dialog, select a page range if you need only some pages. Keep this PDF as the working intermediate; it is also useful for checking the layout before rendering images.
- Render PDF pages as PNG. Open the PDF with a PDF-to-image renderer or conversion tool that supports PNG output. Choose all pages or a page range, set the output resolution or dimensions if the tool offers them, and export. The LibreOffice documentation establishes the DOC-to-PDF stage, not a particular PDF renderer, so check the renderer’s own instructions for its exact controls.
- Inspect the PNG files. Open the resulting images and compare them with the PDF and the original document. Check for clipped content, missing glyphs, altered line breaks, and images that appear too small or soft.
Expect a separate PNG for each rendered page in a typical page-by-page workflow. File naming and whether a tool combines pages into a single image depend on that renderer. If the receiving site or application accepts multiple images, keep each page separate; if it requires one image, confirm its format and dimensions before combining pages.

Can Writer export DOC directly as PNG?
LibreOffice Help lists a Writer PNG export filter, including parameters for output pixel width and height. However, the documented examples do not demonstrate the exact operation of opening a DOC and exporting its pages directly as PNG. Treat direct export as dependent on the LibreOffice version and document, not as a guaranteed replacement for the PDF workflow.
To test it, make a duplicate of the DOC and look for PNG among the available export or save formats in Writer. If it is offered, try it on a short or representative document, then inspect every output page and its dimensions. If the option is absent, exports only a selected object, or changes the page layout, return to PDF export and render the PDF. Do not overwrite the original while testing.
Set page range, image dimensions, and quality
Export only the pages you need
LibreOffice’s PDF export dialog supports page selections and ranges. Exporting only the required pages to the intermediate PDF can save time and avoid producing unnecessary PNGs. Check the renderer as well: some tools let you choose PDF pages during the image-conversion step, but available controls vary.

Choose resolution for the destination
Resolution affects both legibility and file size. A low-resolution image may be adequate for a small on-screen preview but can make fine text difficult to read; a larger image retains more detail and takes more storage. LibreOffice’s PDF guidance notes that lower DPI can reduce quality and that higher output resolution increases file size. Pick dimensions for the actual use—such as an upload limit or the intended display size—rather than assuming the largest export is always best.
Writer’s PNG filter documentation includes pixel-width and pixel-height parameters, but it does not establish a universal best setting for this DOC conversion. If you use direct export, check the actual image dimensions. If you use the PDF route, set resolution in the PDF renderer if that option is available, then inspect a page with small text before converting the full document.
Check layout fidelity
Rendering is not the same as proving that the page matches Microsoft Word pixel for pixel. A font unavailable on the computer, a different line-wrapping decision, or a layout element interpreted differently can move content before the PDF is made. Compare the PDF with the DOC in Writer first; then compare the PNG with the PDF. If fidelity is essential, verify the output in the software and environment in which it will be used.

Other free routes and their limits
LibreOffice Online conversion API
The LibreOffice Online project documents a developer-facing HTTP POST conversion endpoint and names PNG and PDF as possible output formats. That establishes an API capability, not a ready-to-use public converter for consumers. It does not establish that an unaffiliated website is free, available, suitable for your file, or safe for confidential documents. Do not send a document to a hosted service until you have checked the actual service’s current access, limits, privacy policy, retention terms, and pricing.
Microsoft Word for the web
Microsoft’s support guidance says that a legacy DOC opens view-only in Word for the web; using Convert creates a DOCX copy for editing. That guidance does not describe a direct DOC-to-PNG conversion workflow. Word for the web may help you view or convert the document for editing, but it is not established by that guidance as a one-step page-image converter.

The cited product information does not establish batch limits or a particular consumer converter’s bulk features. For many documents, a local workflow may avoid uploading each file, but the steps above are manual and no batch performance is promised. If considering a hosted or automated option, verify its supported input formats, page handling, batch limit, privacy terms, and cost before committing a large set of files.

Privacy and file handling
With the desktop workflow, the document can remain on your computer through the DOC-to-PDF conversion and local rendering stages. A hosted converter requires sending the file to that service, so its handling depends on that provider’s terms; the available documentation does not establish the privacy practices of any named consumer service. For sensitive files, prefer a local workflow unless your organization has approved the hosted service.
Retain the original DOC and, when useful, the intermediate PDF until you have checked the output. When using a web converter, read its current terms for file retention and deletion rather than assuming an uploaded file is removed immediately.
Troubleshooting common conversion problems
- The DOC will not open: confirm that you selected the correct file and that it is a genuine DOC rather than a differently formatted file with a changed extension. Try a fresh copy. If Writer cannot read it, the steps here cannot repair a damaged or unsupported file.
- The PDF layout differs from the original: inspect fonts, line breaks, tables, margins, and page breaks in Writer before exporting. A font or layout difference introduced at this stage will carry into the PNG. Correct what you can in the working copy or use a compatible word processor to create the PDF.
- The PNG is blurry or too large: adjust the renderer’s output resolution or dimensions, if available. Increase detail for readable small text or reduce dimensions when the destination has a strict size requirement. Re-render one page and inspect it before repeating the conversion.
- Only one page or object appears in the image: check whether you used Writer’s graphic export rather than a page-rendering workflow. Export the document to PDF, then convert the PDF pages with a PDF renderer.
- Some pages are missing: check the PDF page count and the selected page range in the export dialog and renderer. If pages are already absent from the PDF, correct the document/export stage before converting again.
- The online route is unavailable: an API endpoint documented by a software project does not imply that a public consumer service is operating. Use the desktop workflow or verify the availability and terms of the specific service you intend to use.

- For a free, local conversion of document pages: use Writer to export a PDF, then render its pages as PNG.
- For a direct Writer-to-PNG test: try it only on a copy and verify the output against the document, because the cited help does not establish that exact workflow.

Does converting a DOC to PNG preserve selectable text?
PNG is a raster image format, so text in the resulting page image is not normally selectable as document text. Keep the DOC or PDF if you also need searchable or editable text.
Will the converted PNGs have the same page dimensions as the DOC?
The image dimensions depend on the renderer’s settings and chosen resolution. Check the resulting pixel dimensions and the requirements of the destination that will receive the images.
