Free vs Paid Minecraft Server Hosting: Which Is Worth It in 2026?

Free hosting is worth it when a small group can tolerate setup work and downtime; paid hosting is worth it when the world must be available without someone maintaining a computer. Mojang’s Java and Bedrock server software costs nothing to download, but self-hosting still uses your hardware, electricity, internet connection, storage, backups and time. The official paid baseline is Minecraft Realms, which supplies an always-online managed world and backups for a monthly fee. Larger communities, heavy modding and detailed server control usually require either a more capable self-hosted machine or a managed third-party host chosen for specific requirements.

Free hosting and paid hosting solve different problems

The word “free” describes the server software, not necessarily the complete service. With self-hosting, you download the official server program, run it on a computer you control and make the network reachable to friends. You are then responsible for the machine, operating system, Java runtime where applicable, firewall and port configuration, storage, backups, updates, troubleshooting and uptime.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A paid service moves some or all of that work to a provider. Minecraft Realms is Mojang’s managed option: the subscription includes a personal server intended to remain available 24/7, free backups and the ability for invited friends to play without buying their own hosting subscription. Managed third-party hosts can add file access, custom server software, mods, plugins, geographic locations and resource scaling, but their prices, limits, backup policies and reliability differ by provider.

For a managed Minecraft option beyond Realms, Godlike.Host supports Java, Bedrock and modded servers with its own game panel, free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day; see the current plans for details.

What “free Minecraft server hosting” actually includes

Official software is free

Mojang makes Java Edition server software available to download at no software charge. Bedrock Dedicated Server is also available for supported Windows or Linux systems. A Java server needs a compatible Java runtime; Bedrock has its own supported-system requirements. A server download is therefore a legitimate way to play with friends without subscribing to Realms.

Your household supplies the infrastructure

Self-hosting normally uses a desktop, laptop or other suitable machine at the owner’s location. The computer must stay powered on whenever friends need access. Its processor, memory and storage become the server’s capacity, while the household internet connection carries every player’s traffic. Electricity, hardware wear, disk space and a replacement plan are real costs even when the download is free.

Internet access needs configuration

Players on the same local network may be able to connect with less configuration, but people outside that network generally require firewall and port settings that permit the server to receive connections. The exact steps depend on the operating system, router and edition. Incorrect rules can prevent anyone from joining; overly broad rules can expose an unnecessary service. Only open the access the server needs, keep the operating system and server software current, and avoid publishing your home address or other private details.

Backups and recovery are your job

A self-hosted world can be lost through a failed drive, accidental deletion, corruption or an update that goes wrong. Copy the world files to separate storage on a schedule that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose, and verify that a copy can actually be restored. A backup on the same physical disk is not a complete recovery plan.

What Minecraft Realms pays for

Realms is the simplest official paid path for a small group that wants a world available without leaving a personal computer running. The current Minecraft pricing page lists these monthly plans:

Plan Monthly price (USD) Simultaneous players Included positioning
Bedrock Realms $3.99 per month Owner plus two players Managed personal server, 24/7 availability and free backups
Bedrock Realms Plus $7.99 per month Owner plus ten players Managed personal server, 24/7 availability, free backups and Marketplace Pass content
Java Realms $7.99 per month Up to ten simultaneous players under the Realms limit Managed personal server, 24/7 availability and free backups

These are the prices listed by Minecraft/Mojang at the time of writing and can vary by region, taxes or later changes. Realms is designed for small groups, not a large public community; the official edition explanation describes a maximum of 10 simultaneous players for Realms. The owner pays the subscription, while invited friends can play without their own Realms subscription.

Realms removes much of the administration burden, but it is not an unlimited server. You do not get a blank check for players, custom infrastructure or arbitrary scaling. If your group needs more than the fixed player limit, extensive file-level control, unusual server software, heavy mods or plugins, evaluate another architecture instead of assuming a higher Realms tier will solve it.

Free self-hosting versus Realms at a glance

Question Free self-hosting Minecraft Realms
Software fee Official Java or Bedrock server software is free to download Monthly subscription
Who supplies the computer? The server owner The service provider
When is the world online? When the owner’s machine and connection are running and configured Designed to be available 24/7
Networking work Owner handles firewall and, when needed, router and port configuration Connection management is handled by the service
Backups Owner creates and tests them Free backups are included
Control Owner controls files, software and machine settings Simple managed experience with fixed limits
Group size Depends on the machine, connection and server configuration Fixed simultaneous-player limits; Realms is intended for small groups

How to decide which option fits your group

1. Decide whether “always online” is essential

Ask whether players need to enter the world when the owner is at work, asleep or away. If the answer is no, a computer that runs only during scheduled sessions can make self-hosting practical. If the answer is yes, compare the subscription with the cost and inconvenience of leaving a reliable machine, network and backup system running continuously.

2. Count the real administrators

Free hosting works best when at least one person is comfortable maintaining a server. That person must handle runtime or server updates, access rules, backups, restores and diagnosis when a friend cannot connect. If nobody wants that role, the monthly Realms fee buys time and predictability rather than merely server space.

3. Identify the control you actually need

Self-hosting gives the owner direct access to server files and the underlying operating system. That matters for custom server jars, mods, plugins, scheduled tasks, unusual settings or a specialized security policy. Realms favors a guided, low-maintenance setup. Do not pay for a more elaborate host until you can name the files, software or scheduled jobs your group requires.

4. Match the player count to the service

Realms’ fixed limits are easy to understand: Bedrock Realms allows the owner plus two simultaneous players, while Bedrock Realms Plus and Java Realms support up to 10 simultaneous players under the Realms limit. A group that regularly exceeds that cap needs a different plan or self-hosted design. A self-hosted machine is not automatically adequate for a larger group; its processor, memory, storage speed, connection and server configuration all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Choose the correct edition first

Java and Bedrock are separate server ecosystems. Java players need Java-compatible hosting, and Bedrock players need Bedrock hosting. Platform cross-play exists only within the supported edition ecosystem; owning the game on one edition does not make a server for the other edition compatible. Decide which edition every participant uses before buying a plan or configuring a server.

6. Calculate total cost, not just the advertised price

For self-hosting, list the computer’s purchase or upgrade cost, electricity, internet reliability, storage, replacement parts, backup media and the value of administration time. For Realms, list the recurring subscription, any applicable regional taxes and a console player’s separate online-service requirement. For a third-party host, add the plan fee, paid backups or extra storage if applicable, and any upgrade needed for your chosen mods or player count. There is no universal market-wide “cheapest” host without specifying edition, location, capacity and backup terms.

Practical recommendations by use case

Two or three occasional players

Try free self-hosting when one person is comfortable running the server and everyone accepts that the world disappears when that computer is off. This is the clearest case where the software’s zero price can outweigh the administration work. Make a backup before major changes and agree who is responsible for starting and stopping the server.

A family or small friend group that expects simple access

Compare the $3.99 Bedrock Realms tier with the value of not maintaining a machine if only the owner and two other players need to be online at once. For a larger small group, the $7.99 Bedrock Realms Plus or Java Realms price buys the managed service and a limit of up to 10 simultaneous players, depending on edition. Realms is the straightforward choice when convenience and availability matter more than deep customization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More than 10 simultaneous players

Realms’ published limit makes it unsuitable for a group that routinely exceeds 10 simultaneous players. Assess a managed third-party host or a self-hosted machine against an actual player schedule, edition, location, backup policy and resource requirement. Avoid selecting a plan solely because it advertises a large memory number; memory alone does not guarantee acceptable performance.

Heavy mods, plugins or custom administration

Start with a requirements list: server software or jar, mod and plugin versions, file access, scheduled tasks, world size, backup frequency, restoration method and the geographic location that gives players a stable connection. A managed host may provide these controls, while self-hosting provides the broadest access if you can operate the machine securely. Realms’ simplicity is an advantage for an unmodified small world, not a substitute for every custom server feature.

Console players

Hosting and platform access are separate questions. Minecraft Help states that console multiplayer requires the relevant paid online subscription in addition to any hosting cost. Confirm that requirement for each console platform and region before comparing a “free” server with a paid one.

Edition, account and policy checks before inviting anyone

  • Use the same edition and a currently supported release across the server and connecting clients.
  • Check Minecraft Help’s system specifications and maintain a stable internet connection; inadequate hardware or an unstable link can make either paid or free hosting frustrating.
  • As of March 2025, Minecraft Help says Java Edition online play and updates require at least Windows 10 or macOS 10.15. Verify the current requirements if a player uses an older system.
  • Every player must have a genuine paid copy of Minecraft for the relevant edition. Mojang’s usage guidelines require server operators to limit access accordingly.
  • Tell players what server content and pricing they will encounter before they join. Mojang’s guidelines also describe conditions for charging access, accepting donations and selling certain gameplay entitlements; read the current wording before introducing any paid feature.

Self-hosting setup checklist

  1. Pick the edition and software. Download the official Java server software for Java Edition or Bedrock Dedicated Server for a supported Windows or Linux system.
  2. Prepare a dedicated location. Use a machine with enough storage for the world and backups, place it where it can remain powered on when players need access, and prevent sleep settings from stopping the server.
  3. Install the required runtime. Java Edition requires a compatible Java runtime. Keep the runtime and server release aligned with the version your players use.
  4. Create the world and administration policy. Decide who can join, who can administer the server, how operator privileges are granted and where world files and backups live.
  5. Configure local firewall access. Permit the server application through the host firewall only as needed. Test from the same network before attempting an outside connection.
  6. Configure external access carefully. If friends are outside your home network, apply the router and port settings required by your edition and network. Confirm that your internet service permits inbound connections, and share connection details only with intended players.
  7. Test with a second player. Verify joining, building, disconnecting and reconnecting. Check that the server remains usable while the owner performs ordinary computer tasks.
  8. Automate or schedule backups. Keep copies on separate storage, retain more than one restore point and periodically perform a test restore so a damaged world is not your only copy.
  9. Document recovery. Record the server version, world location, administrator access and restore procedure. This turns a forgotten setup into a maintainable one when the original owner is unavailable.

Common failure points and the right response

Friends cannot connect from outside the house

First test the server locally. If local players work but outside players do not, inspect the host firewall, router or port configuration and whether the internet provider allows inbound traffic. Recheck the edition and server release before changing hardware. Do not expose more ports than necessary.

The owner’s computer is off

A self-hosted server cannot be reached while its host machine is shut down, asleep or disconnected. Either schedule play for times when the owner is present, configure a dependable always-on machine, or move the world to a managed service whose purpose includes continuous availability.

The world is lost after an update or disk problem

Stop making changes, preserve the affected files and restore the newest verified backup. If no independent backup exists, recovery may not be possible. Keep a written version and backup history so future updates can be reversed deliberately.

Players use the wrong edition

Confirm whether the server is Java or Bedrock and check every player’s client. A Java server is not made compatible with Bedrock merely by changing a setting, and the reverse is also true. Choose hosting for the edition the group actually owns and uses.

The group outgrows Realms

When simultaneous players exceed the published Realms limit or the world needs mods, plugins or fine-grained file control, document those requirements and compare a managed host with self-hosting. Move only after confirming that the destination supports the edition, world files, software versions and backup process you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Realms worth paying for?

For a small, edition-matched group, Realms is usually worth the subscription when the alternative is buying or maintaining an always-on computer, solving network problems and creating tested backups. The $3.99 Bedrock entry tier is aimed at the owner plus two simultaneous players; the $7.99 Bedrock Realms Plus and Java Realms tiers cover up to 10 simultaneous players under Realms’ stated limit. The value is convenience, availability and managed recovery rather than unlimited technical control.

Realms is less compelling when the group plays only occasionally and already has a suitable computer, or when the project needs more players, extensive mods, plugins, custom server software or operating-system access. In those cases, free self-hosting can be economical for a technically confident owner, while a managed third-party host can reduce maintenance without imposing Realms’ fixed boundaries. Compare the exact requirements and recurring costs instead of treating “free” or “paid” as a complete specification.

A quick decision checklist

  • Choose free self-hosting if a capable owner is available, downtime is acceptable, the group is small, and the edition and networking requirements are straightforward.
  • Choose Bedrock Realms at $3.99/month if the owner and up to two other Bedrock players want the simplest managed world.
  • Choose Bedrock Realms Plus at $7.99/month if a Bedrock group needs the larger Realms player allowance and Marketplace Pass content.
  • Choose Java Realms at $7.99/month if Java players want a managed world with Realms’ small-group limit.
  • Evaluate managed third-party hosting or a self-hosted machine when the group exceeds Realms’ cap or needs custom files, mods, plugins, scheduled tasks or broader control.
  • Budget separately for console online access when any participant plays on a console.
